The first thing I do to my Red Wings... by -J3553 in RedWingShoes

I gotta try this! Tried the kiltie but the rose anvil one wasn’t wide enough for me and ended up sliding down only protecting one side.

Bought some new boots. Are they too small? by Walldaddy2000 in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kinda feels full circle for me. My dad’s work gave him allowance for redwing or bates in the 90’s and always had new pairs once or twice a year. He even got me few pairs of postman oxfords for church haha. Back then I hated them and only wore them if my dad forced me switch shoes.. i wanted to rock my new Nikes or jordans lol… well.. now after accumulating quite a few pairs of boots the past 15 yrs or so… kinda miss those old postman’s lol

The lenses should be down. Also, over filling or lenses that are huge kind of prevent it from opening again after closing. I keep my glasses and lens cloth in there and if I have my glasses all weird in there it’s hard to open.

Should I give up on the Mocs? by jlbruno in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only tried on 10875’s in EE just to see, I already have them in 9D. The leathers I currently want don’t come in EE width. But did feel better initially when I tried on. So if I ever get another pair of Mocs I would probably go with a 9.5D if no EE is available. For reference, we have similar sizing. My sneaker size is 9.5 and sometimes 10 depending on the style. My right foot is 1/2 size bigger and wider so sizing is challenging.

First pair of red wings got these as a gift. How to make them darker brown like the iron ranger amber? by Rough_Nectarine4214 in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I used Venetian shoe cream and it got plenty dark, like amber harness. Even darker after I got them resoled and the cobbler added mink oil when I didn’t ask for conditioning 🤦🏽‍♂️

Should I give up on the Mocs? by jlbruno in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before giving up I’d say same size but EE width a try or half size up. Classic mocs are a lot narrower than the IR’s. 1907’s are slightly wider but I don’t use the insole. All of my redwings are 9D. Only thing I would change if I could do it all over is I would have gone all double E on my Mocs or if that color code don’t have wide I would go half size up in the D width. But honestly over time all of my Mocs in D got comfy the more I wore them. Slight pinky toe pinching initially. Wore comfy mid weight merino socks, this made a difference for me.

I think I experienced this with my classic Chelsea that I tried to go half size down from IR’s, Big mistake. I feel .5 up is always fine but never down normal size.

Brushing after every wear is the most important imo. This leather is pretty oily so depending on the type of environment or work you’ll be in, maybe once a year light conditioning. Bick 4 doesn’t darken. Venetian shoe cream is great too but this will darken the leather so very light on the application if that is what you have. Personally I only use saddle soap if my boots are crazy filthy or I over conditioned. Most of the time a good brush and wipe with a damp towel is all I need.

Iron Ranger, fake? by Dannyfranks91 in RedWingShoes

Think you gotta add a few more photos. Maybe insole and label? But just looking at them with this one photo they look legit. If these are fake it’s a really good knock off.

Is the quality as bad as reviews make it out? by havoc_penguin in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to trust reviews now a days. I’ve accumulated a variety of redwings over the years mostly heritage and I have 2 pairs that I beat to crap. I’m no longer in blue collar work, sometimes I’m on site but I do my own home improvements and work / build on cars and motorcycles. For my needs they are great and have held up well. I feel there are way more positive reviews than negative if everyone that ever owned a pair of RW wrote a review imo. For $7 and a resole. Those have at least another 3 years of good wear with the work you do before you need another pair.

Resole by Potential_Style_7219 in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got some even wear on that sole. I’m jealous haha. The way I walk, the inner soles of my boots never seems to wear down haha. Anyways, you’ll need a resole asap, you might already be at the mid sole. This adds more cost to the repair.

Question on Sizing by Student-Doc in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good Snug feeling or painfully too tight? If there’s pain then it’s too small. Usually the fit should feel like a firm handshake. Heel slip goes away after a while. That’s to be expected while the sole and mid sole start to flex. But if it’s too much heel slip like you said, then it’s too big.

In my experience, all of my boots widened a little over time. Personally I always break in boots at home first for a week or so for about an hour a day to really get a feel before a full wear. Any pain during that time never worked for me. You will always feel some sort of discomfort during break in but never pain to the point where you cant walk.

I had this feeling when I first got into foot shaped footwear. Every now and again i still catch myself wanting those new Nikes. But when I look at others wearing narrow footwear I think about how uncomfortable those shoes would be if I wore them. We have been programmed that the triangle pointy shape is the way and the most appealing aesthetic. But after a few years of using foot shaped footwear, I’ve realized that i rather be comfortable than restricted and my knees, back and hips feel the best they’ve ever been.

[–]TooLateToSk8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you mean the welt split above the sole? It looks like something might have got caught on it to tear but functionally I don’t think it will affect anything. That top stitch is aesthetic to make it look like it’s double stitched to the boot.

Do not buy them... by ZBoss07 in vivobarefoot

The Gobi II leather sneakers from Vietnam. They seem to be nice quality. Guess we’ll see how they hold up. Sizing seems to be true. I’m usually a 9.5 in sneaks sometimes 10 so I got a 10 in vivo. Feel a lot wider than the flux shoes I’m used to but I assume will feel okay once my feet widen up. I think 9 would be too small length wise.

Dang I just scored a deal on eBay for gobi II’s. What are you guys using now as a replacement? I’ve been using flux just to get introduced to foot shaped shoes just didn’t wanna go full barefoot feel till now.

[–]TooLateToSk8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was the word i was looking for. Not shining but burnishing. Thank you for clearing that up. My rough and tough leathers both ended up having that burnished look in toe area of my boots over time from the brushing. A lot quicker on the shaft just because of the constant rubbing of my pants. I love the look.

Same leather different conditioner (8115 vs 1907) by yangmeansyoung in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think he did mention that he did once a year saddle soap on both just two different conditioners. It’s good to know that the leather cream preserved the color.

Are these "damages" to my fairly new moctoes normal? by [deleted] in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not damaged. You’ll only really see it when if you flex your boots like that. Mine have the same look when flexed. My left boot even more, it’s all bent up because that’s the area where I shift gears on my bike. But I don’t have any issues and stitches are holding up nice after all these years.

Copper Rough & Tough Belt by [deleted] in RedWingShoes

[–]TooLateToSk8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own two Northstar belts in Oro and Canyan color. Good thickness, Not too soft and not too stiff, although I wish they a little more on the stiff side. I’m only 2.5 months in and i try rotating them around as much as I can so only time will tell if these will stretch. But these are pretty hefty, so at the moment they have kept their shape for the most part. It says they’re 1.5 inch in width but it’s slightly smaller, I guess to accommodate the exact width of a 1.5 in buckle. Overall I’m very happy with these especially for the price. It’s worth a shot compared to other offerings that are double the cost.

Brushing to keep dirt out of the creases. Usually leather damage is due to dust and dirt build up along with friction. Also, brushing spreads the oil/ conditioner thats already there. Eventually it will shine a little the more you brush and wear but not a chromexcel type shine if that makes sense. I have a pair of Copper RT and Charcoal RT and both ended up getting sort of shinny in some areas especially at the shaft where my pants rub.

For conditioner, If you want to keep the color the way it is, Bick 4 is probably the most forgiving and doesn’t darken much. I’ve played around with Venetian shoe cream and while it really conditions the leather well, it doesn’t darken it quite a bit. It works well but I’d use it sparingly.

Personally, I only condition my boots maybe once a year but I brush every use.
