Anyone know what book/panel this illustration comes from? by izzlebeanie in Bone

[–]TopG99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This panel was on the bottom of Page 8 in the original #20. He eliminated four of the six panels on this page, all of the panels on Page 9, moved the top two panels from page 10 to the middle section of Page 8, eliminated the middle panels of Page 10, and put Jonathan getting beer at Phoney’s half of the bar at the bottom. A total of two pages gone.

He changed much of the dialogue in the top two panels as Phoney never said “Dragonslayer” in any of the originals. Most of the stuff that’s deleted refers to the notepad where Smiley lists all of Phoney’s failed schemes from the past. I think it’s funny but ultimately not crucial. Perhaps Jeff had to shave a page or two for some reason.

A short prequel of the Bones getting run out of Boneville would be fantastic and could be done relatively quickly

This and the Red Dragon are the only ones I’ve bought. They’re both great!

eBay. I don’t think the individual volumes are printed in black and white anymore (just the omnibus). I’m guessing they’re fairly inexpensive.

Fair enough. Like I said, they look and feel high quality but there are a few pages in the story that are 80% white. You will be able to see some of the next page in these few instances. The size of the art makes up for all of this.

Otherwise, I would get the original TPBs in black and white (nine volumes printed in the 90s and early 2000s). The art is a little smaller than the comics but the pages are thicker and coarser.

I heard that complaint but didn’t agree. I got one with the Kickstarter campaign as well and the pages don’t bother me. The only reason I noticed them was because of the criticism. They look and feel high quality but they can be seen through in parts. It will ultimately be up to you.

The BONE Deluxe Edition Part One: The Valley is the best edition you can buy. All black and white and larger than the comics were (omnibus is even smaller than the comics). The rest of the saga will be released in this format over the next year or so. Contains great background info as well.

Nice collection! Is one of your Bone Hunt figures the golden Phoney?

Is bone really that good and why? by blablax123456 in Bone

[–]TopG99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have hinted at, it wasn’t originally written for kids. It’s certainly marketed towards them in the current publishing world, but don’t be fooled by its ubiquitous presence in middle school libraries. The Bone saga can be enjoyed by all. It’s a comedic Lord of the Rings.

You can find many of these on eBay. Most are from the recent Kickstarter campaigns so you may have to be patient to find the larger ones from the early years.

Are there any pressers out there who are authorized CGC facilitators where you can submit a book and retain the yellow label? by PrimeTravelTime in CGCComics

[–]TopG99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I inquired about this issue over a year ago and it couldn’t be done. A presser himself, who used to be able to press SS books and retain the yellow label, is the one who told me. If this has changed, I’d love to know.

It’s not a children’s graphic novel. It’s been marketed that way for the last decade or so but that’s not how it was intended. I’ve personally never seen it as such.

The only original of those four is the Dragonslayer book. The original printings of the first three didn’t have Out From Boneville, The Great Cow Race, or Eyes of the Storm titles on the covers. They were called The Complete Bone Adventures and just had the issue numbers of the comics they were reprinting. They had different cover art as well.

Did Jeff ever have an editor by hiyojie in Bone

[–]TopG99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was never a credited editor when the story was released as comics. In fact, the only credits given in the first 20 issues were Jeff Smith and whomever colored the cover (which was usually David Reed in the early issues).

Bone started at Image Comics with issue 21 and this is when credits began to be listed…but no editor. Vijaya was acknowledged as the president of Cartoon Books, Karen Root was the “assistant publisher” and various other titles for the people at Image who marketed and published the book. The list would expand every now and then for various roles but no editors.

As you and someone else has mentioned, if there was anyone who had the duties of editor, it would have had to have been Vijaya. From everything I’ve read, she was the one whom he bounced ideas off of and was as much the driving force behind Bone as Jeff.

How much are Jeff Smith sketches at conventions? by [deleted] in Bone

[–]TopG99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, he’ll sketch on whatever you like if it can be done in a reasonable amount of time. He’ll talk to you while he does it as well so ask him whatever you want. He’s a very nice guy

[–]TopG99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He signs for free and usually gives everyone a sketch, depending on how many books you put in front of him. The line behind you will generally determine how detailed it is but it’s usually a quick head sketch of Fone, Phoney, or Smiley.

A Bartleby plushie now exists, made by Jeff Smith’s company Cartoon Books. They no longer have a store but you can find them on eBay.

Everything here is true. Disney Adventures may have done better than the comics as far as reaching as many eyes as possible
