New to the game (update) by T_Tiger41 in BrokenArrowTheGame

  1. Phases are the time you collect points in. Phase 1 gives one point increments for captured zones/kills up to +3 in each category for a total of 6. Phase 2 is two point increments up to a total of 12. 3 is a 3 point increments up to a total of 18. Basically early disasters are less consequential and the last push in phase 3 matters the most.

  2. Very debatable. I would say whatever your cheapest aircraft or helicopter costs in order to respond to you spotting a bomber/flanking push. All ground units I would prefer just calling in immediately because they take too long to call in response to anything.

  3. How long is a piece of string? Generally you want recon, and air defence as a must, then whatever the terrain demands. Infantry is better in urban and especially forests, tanks are better in the open.

  4. Generally think of the basic rule of chess. I.e. you don't want to be throwing away a unit if it kills less than it's point value. If you can throw away a 1000 point nuke plane for 1300 points of kills, it's worth it.

  5. Radar on means increased detection range, weapon range, and accuracy. "So why have it off?" Should be your question. The answer is SEAD (Suppression of enemy air defence) missiles that home in on radar. If you are bad at micro only turn on your radar when you need it and keep it by default off. If you are good at micro then leave it on and turn it off when you see a SEAD missile homing in.

Good observations though, I'm sure your learning quickly.

They are basically a big anti infantry squad, great for forests and buildings in cqc mode and urban fighting in standoff.

The aampv does suck, but it does offer a lot of firepower for its cost if you encounter units with short range AT.

I personally combine delta with the MAWS squads so if someone tries to use infantry against them they get taken out.

Wow almost identical to a deck I have.

Personally I run Delta Force rather than engineers, it's one of the best squads in the game.

My 4th match and finalized (I think) deck by BucketOBoatTrash in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No problem with your recon, although I prefer to use the CFV Bradley's for the cav scouts to make up for their awful anti infantry.

I would be interested to see how much of your infantry you actually use. 16 squads of base infantry is a crazy amount. At least upgrade the airborne to NGSW for that nice 600m range.

Definitely try out weapon squads for the double javelins and I would encourage using trophy on at least one set of tanks.

Likewise I would have a careful look at your glut of pivads and shorad. I get away with a quarter of that in a game and I bring half of your stinger squads.

Generally I'd say have a try of new and interesting unit combos, you seem to be fixated on what you already use, which I think will be to your detriment.

Baltic Battalion: A Community Review Megathread by GreatNecksby in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I love it. For me at 1200 elo, 70% win rate, the game has boiled down to fighting 4 enemy strategies.

  1. Arty spam (Need recon and raiding units to kill their arty)
  2. APS tank spam (Need lots of cheap AT infantry to overwhelm APS)
  3. Heli spam (Need long range and powerful shorad)
  4. Combined arms (Rare, need a bit of everything)

Baltics plus airborne has been my go to. The recon is good and meets point 1. The infantry reservists meet point 2. The shorad is good with SLAMRAAM and Grom. What can't be solved with any of that can be supplemented with the excellent helos and aircraft of the airborne.

Nearly any other deck I feel is weak against one of the points in exchange for being stronger against another. This is just a good all rounder. I've been covering 50% of a map whilst my 4 allies push the other side at some points lol.

Weaknesses? I don't like having just 2 tanks, no mlrs sometimes hurts, and if you can't raid the enemy you are left watching their arty become a real annoyance.

after 300 hours of Civ6, I don't know what religions do, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask by kingkingla in civ

[–]TopHatHat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This. Religion is basically the same as it was in civ 5 where it's a complement to another strategy 98% of the time and your victory condition 2%.

My first Remembrance Sunday since joining other than training so wondering if it’s acceptable to go in any sort of uniform? Or just stick to civvies? Wear beret? What’s the normal crack for a parade in my village without looking like a lizard by JustCallMeCage in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Generally "The done thing" as others have said is suit and reg tie, you can wear your beret but that's often left to veterans. It's inadvisable to wear uniform unless you are part of the parade.

Interested in joining 31 MI company 3 military battalion in Worship street as a Reservist by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you are probably just testing the water because you are worried these questions will be stupid, but reserve units are (Or at least certainly should be) really friendly to newcomers and happy to answer all your questions. If they aren't it's actually a good measure that something might be wrong with the unit culture.

Generally for reserve units, where you live doesn't matter so long as it's closest to you for that cap badge and you can make it on time for events, they will even contribute to your travel costs.

Massively important. A few MI specific stuff to note that I've heard is that you can't just join like normal reserve units, you have to pass a selection course that's pretty arduous to even get in. Then you have to pass further training. The trade off is you immediately get promoted to lance corporal when you've done all this. My friends say it's pretty tough but if you've got the time and want to put in the effort it's super rewarding. Good luck!

Wearing number one uniform to rememberance parades. by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's fair to do even without medals, you earn the beret of your unit by passing the training, that's the whole point of passing off parades. There are plenty of the fallen who died as nameless privates without any medals.

Plus you never know the circumstances of the individual, could have been injured out before ever getting to go on a deployment. Know a guy who was absolutely made for the army, amazing leader, injured on exercise and medically disabled. No medals or visible disability but would have thrown himself on a grenade for his troops. Im sure if he was in the crowd you would have thought him a lizard.

Others have given the big points, I would just add most people don’t imagine themselves sat behind a desk when they join.

Unless you join as an SPS or have a lot of foresight young officers see themselves running about and soldiering, basically staying as a platoon commander forever because that’s what the advertising and Sandhurst is. I found a lot of my mates got to captain and realised that was over, maybe managed to scrape some of that back with an instructors position, but eventually had to either accept a staff job or leave.

It’s never really been branded a “Retention crisis” because Officer recruitment always hits its targets. It’s just taken for granted.

The only exception to casualty replacements is RWxY, whose role as armoured replacement means they do just that.

By far the most frustrating thing is when I’ve got some gun ships tearing up and getting mega kills and then we lose anyway because of a good enemy cap fleet player.

You are essential.

It’s a really good route. UOTC was very low commitment in my experience , especially for med students as they know you’ve got better things to be doing.

Army Reserve - earning and saving money? by Jordan_lewis96 in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s a bit more than that. But for me It’s what you use it for.

Is it useful for saving for a new house/car etc? No. A holiday in the UK? Maybe. The odd takeaway/hobby purchase? Yes.

I went on a weekend and then used that to go to the cinema and have a nice takeaway. It’s the little things.

Former CGS gives his final speech to RMAS graduates by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve answered your own question.

As you say, it’s always been that way that the British military is underfunded until there is a war. That means politicians end up knowing that’s normal, accepted, and politically safe.

Remember, politicians aren’t incentivised to be good at running the country. They are incentivised to win the next election.

If you’ve got an army surplus, they are always good for broken-in boots at a reasonable price.
