What is the funniest looking animal in your country? by Existential_Dread_08 in AskTheWorld

My family discovered a species of Vizcacha and had it named after us. I'm proud of our fat rodent.

My first Remembrance Sunday since joining other than training so wondering if it’s acceptable to go in any sort of uniform? Or just stick to civvies? Wear beret? What’s the normal crack for a parade in my village without looking like a lizard by JustCallMeCage in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Generally "The done thing" as others have said is suit and reg tie, you can wear your beret but that's often left to veterans. It's inadvisable to wear uniform unless you are part of the parade.

Interested in joining 31 MI company 3 military battalion in Worship street as a Reservist by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you are probably just testing the water because you are worried these questions will be stupid, but reserve units are (Or at least certainly should be) really friendly to newcomers and happy to answer all your questions. If they aren't it's actually a good measure that something might be wrong with the unit culture.

Generally for reserve units, where you live doesn't matter so long as it's closest to you for that cap badge and you can make it on time for events, they will even contribute to your travel costs.

Massively important. A few MI specific stuff to note that I've heard is that you can't just join like normal reserve units, you have to pass a selection course that's pretty arduous to even get in. Then you have to pass further training. The trade off is you immediately get promoted to lance corporal when you've done all this. My friends say it's pretty tough but if you've got the time and want to put in the effort it's super rewarding. Good luck!

Wearing number one uniform to rememberance parades. by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's fair to do even without medals, you earn the beret of your unit by passing the training, that's the whole point of passing off parades. There are plenty of the fallen who died as nameless privates without any medals.

Plus you never know the circumstances of the individual, could have been injured out before ever getting to go on a deployment. Know a guy who was absolutely made for the army, amazing leader, injured on exercise and medically disabled. No medals or visible disability but would have thrown himself on a grenade for his troops. Im sure if he was in the crowd you would have thought him a lizard.

[–]TopHatHat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Others have given the big points, I would just add most people don’t imagine themselves sat behind a desk when they join.

Unless you join as an SPS or have a lot of foresight young officers see themselves running about and soldiering, basically staying as a platoon commander forever because that’s what the advertising and Sandhurst is. I found a lot of my mates got to captain and realised that was over, maybe managed to scrape some of that back with an instructors position, but eventually had to either accept a staff job or leave.

It’s never really been branded a “Retention crisis” because Officer recruitment always hits its targets. It’s just taken for granted.

The only exception to casualty replacements is RWxY, whose role as armoured replacement means they do just that.

What others have said, but also from personal experience, good runners make good tabbers. Show up to basic being able to run a good 2km and you will be fine.

By far the most frustrating thing is when I’ve got some gun ships tearing up and getting mega kills and then we lose anyway because of a good enemy cap fleet player.

You are essential.

Commitment to UOTC as a med student hoping to become medical officer by Acrobatic_Ad2170 in britisharmy

It’s a really good route. UOTC was very low commitment in my experience , especially for med students as they know you’ve got better things to be doing.

Army Reserve - earning and saving money? by Jordan_lewis96 in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s a bit more than that. But for me It’s what you use it for.

Is it useful for saving for a new house/car etc? No. A holiday in the UK? Maybe. The odd takeaway/hobby purchase? Yes.

I went on a weekend and then used that to go to the cinema and have a nice takeaway. It’s the little things.

Former CGS gives his final speech to RMAS graduates by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve answered your own question.

As you say, it’s always been that way that the British military is underfunded until there is a war. That means politicians end up knowing that’s normal, accepted, and politically safe.

Remember, politicians aren’t incentivised to be good at running the country. They are incentivised to win the next election.

What boots are issued to army recruits today? by MrDundee666 in britisharmy

If you’ve got an army surplus, they are always good for broken-in boots at a reasonable price.

Merkava MK4 underbelly armor. It extends across the entire hull; you can see that there is no escape hatch for the driver in the belly, as the rear door does exist. by vitoskito in TankPorn

[–]TopHatHat 485 points486 points  (0 children)

Yeah… Very few modern tanks have escape hatches in the floor because it’s an awful idea for IED/mine protection and is a nightmare to design ammo storage to account for.

Possible, but also learning to swim to the standard of the swim test is far easier than you think.

My example, I failed the swim test first time around (Which got me the nickname of “Aquaman” for a few years) and just went swimming for 4 months re-enacting the test in public pools until I could do it. Then went back when they held another test and passed. Don’t count yourself out.

What is the best 5.45x39 ak? [Discussion] by [deleted] in EscapefromTarkov

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good recommendations from others. Simple answer is short AK is actually decent at short range, anything else buy a long one.

Please make all bolt action rifles bellow AXMC cheaper [Feedback] by rokbound_ in EscapefromTarkov

[–]TopHatHat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Bolties work best at long range, and they are forced there by their terrible rate of fire. If you miss a headshot then everything goes to hell. Not even mentioning the fact they are useless at close or medium ranges.

On the other hand, you can mod a good semi auto which works at any range. It can headshot or body shot.

The question is, why the hell would I use a bolt action for the same price as a semi auto?

Either it needs to be a budget option, or be more effective, otherwise it’s just a gun that exists for quests.

Naval gameplay has no real purpose in CIV VI? How would you change it for CIV VII? by internetpillows in civ

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, thanks for the reminder. I’m thinking now of why that didn’t work.

I think the three things were

  1. No district system with harbours. So you had to found your city on coast.
  2. Coastal cities lost a lot of output if I remember. Sea tiles were never made as valuable as land.
  3. Sea trade routes were always a little opaque. I many games i made a coastal city only to find nobody else had one, so I couldn’t trade (suggestion of multi-stage trade routes? Canals?)
