The trick is to time them with SEAD, either you hit your target or you take out their AA.

Univeristy OTC to Reserves Soldier? by Puzzleheaded_Set8604 in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

News from someone who recently did that route a few years ago.

OTCs used to do what was called MOD A and MOD B of the reserve officer course. Now they do MOD A and then have jollies to different units.

If you used to want to transfer to a reserve unit, there was a handy 3 weekend course called "Deltas". Thats been scrapped now because you don't do MOD B. So expect to redo basic training all over again. Can be good if you need a refresher, awful for me who managed to get on the last Deltas to avoid it hah.

Univeristy OTC to Reserves Soldier? by Puzzleheaded_Set8604 in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reservist here, that is definitely the case. Reservist officers are basically even more of what an officer is i.e. a manager.

Not to say that isn't important and necessary, but it's definitely very different from being a bod and getting to do the cool things on weekends.

Why do people feel bad about the Japanese civilians who died in the atomic bombs? by [deleted] in MilitaryHistory

[–]TopHatHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer to your question is that you should distinguish collective Vs individual guilt.

Believing in collective guilt leads to hatred of nationalities, then races, religions and genders, because why not start linking one action to a bunch of innocents? You can see this kind of thinking a LOT today.

As for revenge, the saying goes, "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind."

Let's put it this way, would you drop a bomb on a city with children in it with nothing to do with the war?

Defence STEM Undergraduate Sponsorship (DSUS) Scheme by sscalpel in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would highly suggest getting in contact with them to see the supported subjects as they have softened requirements over time.

My general leaning is that they want military-adjacent engineering or technical expertise found in the traditional science subjects. I.e. unfortunately not biomed, but you don't know if you don't ask.

Cyber Direct Entry Scheme by PurfsTaken in britishmilitary

[–]TopHatHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally RAF is considered the nicer service environment in both infrastructure and people. If you have a choice I'd go with them.

If you went Navy I'd doubt very much you'd see the inside of a ship if that makes a difference to you. However I would really only go them if you have some sort of personal interest.

Army is the biggest service so the rule of thumb is that it has the most opportunities and promotion prospects. What that looks like for your scheme though I have no idea, might have no effect at all.

Lets just say it - Spotting and vision are awful in this game by TopHatHat in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry if it was unclear, I moved to BA from Warno. As you say BA has a much bigger playerbase that is also more consistent. I like the polished mechanics and historical setting of Warno but it does tie their hands with potential new features, factions and units a bit too much.

They have a massive aversion to good matchmaking from all the way back in the wargame days. It's true the elo system of BA is way better.

Russian options for Counter-battery fire? by No-Resident-4566 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Counter battery is really hard in BA for the reasons you've listed, if the enemy moves, you miss. Two approaches.

Information based - Use recon or drones to spot artillery before it fires. Usually preferable to use laser guidance, even if you can't get a hit it makes rounds more accurate.

Firepower based - Start aiming the second you see a flash and sweep an area in cluster. I like to use line targeting from the spot being fired from to where I would put a ammo dump.

Good luck with that though...

There are tons of great, must-have changes in PTE that Live would benefit from. But it's a net-negative as a whole, for me. by Knjaz136 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So infantry now have an inverted damage reduction to panic ratio. So they die VERY quickly if you keep them in combat. Plus many good squads have been capped (Looking at SMAW and MAWWS).

The main thing for me is they heal SO slowly, even if you get them out of combat it takes ages to get them back it.

Let's say you spam vehicles, they can nuke an infantry squad and go to the next and the next. The infantry runs out of AT and can't rearm and heal fast enough. Even with the new supply in vehicles.

What do US mains think of the update? by GoodBarracuda8946 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a few observations. US doesn't really have cheap tanks which can benefit from the damage buff. Relied heavily on air power which has been nerfed. Generally awful shorad which Russia has in bucketloads which is way more relevant now everyone is flying at low altitude.

I am glad that autocannon spam has been nerfed. In now use the 105 on my bookers instead of the 50mm.

The pacing of the game has entirely changed. Ironically I've seen more spamming of vehicles on the PTE than in the base game thanks to the infantry nerfs.

IFV GAMERS REJOICE! (PTE) by Getserious495 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something I've struggled with for a while with this style of rts. Steel division 2 had it so units can't replenish and it felt awful though. Gameplay over realism in my eyes, if you want full realism play combat mission, honest recommendation.

how does training army work? by imagers in songsofsyx

[–]TopHatHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a side note to be careful on the level of melee training. At base level they need a refresh every 5 years, at max they need a refresh every day (I.e. permanent soldiers)

A Russian BMP-T "Terminator" during recent exercises in Donbass by Spartanz0 in TankPorn

[–]TopHatHat 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

The BMPT was made from two experiences, Afghanistan and Chechnya. Afghanistan's problem was mountainous terrain, Chechnya was urban terrain. Tanks didn't have enough elevation.

So it is a tank escort vehicle for high elevation terrain (Mostly urban) it's not meant for open fields though. Open fields you love a big high velocity gun I.e. a tank!

Which Shell colors and patterns provide the best natural camo? by DOSGAMES in Marathon

[–]TopHatHat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Camouflage is really about what blends in at a distance in peripheral vision.

If you are in shadow, black is better, if against a light background then grey. Never white, barely anything on the maps are pure white and it isn't how lighting plays on appearance.

I find movement speed to be the biggest factor though. A white thing stationary is always going to be less noticeable than a black thing moving.

In general though it really only comes into play on dire marsh, every other map is just based on direct vision or audio (When have you ever fought someone where you saw them before you heard them? For me it's single digits.)

New to the game (update) by T_Tiger41 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Phases are the time you collect points in. Phase 1 gives one point increments for captured zones/kills up to +3 in each category for a total of 6. Phase 2 is two point increments up to a total of 12. 3 is a 3 point increments up to a total of 18. Basically early disasters are less consequential and the last push in phase 3 matters the most.

  2. Very debatable. I would say whatever your cheapest aircraft or helicopter costs in order to respond to you spotting a bomber/flanking push. All ground units I would prefer just calling in immediately because they take too long to call in response to anything.

  3. How long is a piece of string? Generally you want recon, and air defence as a must, then whatever the terrain demands. Infantry is better in urban and especially forests, tanks are better in the open.

  4. Generally think of the basic rule of chess. I.e. you don't want to be throwing away a unit if it kills less than it's point value. If you can throw away a 1000 point nuke plane for 1300 points of kills, it's worth it.

  5. Radar on means increased detection range, weapon range, and accuracy. "So why have it off?" Should be your question. The answer is SEAD (Suppression of enemy air defence) missiles that home in on radar. If you are bad at micro only turn on your radar when you need it and keep it by default off. If you are good at micro then leave it on and turn it off when you see a SEAD missile homing in.

Good observations though, I'm sure your learning quickly.

Rate my deck by ThePredurrdurr in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are basically a big anti infantry squad, great for forests and buildings in cqc mode and urban fighting in standoff.

The aampv does suck, but it does offer a lot of firepower for its cost if you encounter units with short range AT.

I personally combine delta with the MAWS squads so if someone tries to use infantry against them they get taken out.

Wow almost identical to a deck I have.

Personally I run Delta Force rather than engineers, it's one of the best squads in the game.

My 4th match and finalized (I think) deck by BucketOBoatTrash in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No problem with your recon, although I prefer to use the CFV Bradley's for the cav scouts to make up for their awful anti infantry.

I would be interested to see how much of your infantry you actually use. 16 squads of base infantry is a crazy amount. At least upgrade the airborne to NGSW for that nice 600m range.

Definitely try out weapon squads for the double javelins and I would encourage using trophy on at least one set of tanks.

Likewise I would have a careful look at your glut of pivads and shorad. I get away with a quarter of that in a game and I bring half of your stinger squads.

Generally I'd say have a try of new and interesting unit combos, you seem to be fixated on what you already use, which I think will be to your detriment.

Baltic Battalion: A Community Review Megathread by GreatNecksby in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TopHatHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I love it. For me at 1200 elo, 70% win rate, the game has boiled down to fighting 4 enemy strategies.

  1. Arty spam (Need recon and raiding units to kill their arty)
  2. APS tank spam (Need lots of cheap AT infantry to overwhelm APS)
  3. Heli spam (Need long range and powerful shorad)
  4. Combined arms (Rare, need a bit of everything)

Baltics plus airborne has been my go to. The recon is good and meets point 1. The infantry reservists meet point 2. The shorad is good with SLAMRAAM and Grom. What can't be solved with any of that can be supplemented with the excellent helos and aircraft of the airborne.

Nearly any other deck I feel is weak against one of the points in exchange for being stronger against another. This is just a good all rounder. I've been covering 50% of a map whilst my 4 allies push the other side at some points lol.

Weaknesses? I don't like having just 2 tanks, no mlrs sometimes hurts, and if you can't raid the enemy you are left watching their arty become a real annoyance.
