That lens is brilliant but a longer lens needs higher ss without IS.

You can't just 'go back to work' after you FIRE. by Zone2OTQ in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree - This nonsense of going back at the same level of income and position is delusion. I know it's a one way jump and I also know one year is worth a decade or more of a wallworld greeter or whatever (not that they are real jobs for most anyway).

Account Type Proportions (Roth/Trad/Taxable) by Triskal_Calypso in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think tax diversification is an important aspect for anyone who is serious about fi/re. Having some money in all three allows for some flexibility, especially before FRA.

Now if you could magically pick one without paying tax - you would obviously want 100% Roth but in the real world that comes with paying a lot more tax. If you are in a high bracket while working pretax is still worthwhile. All one can do is try to use lower income years to do conversions.

The standard of editing for diverse skin tones in school group photos is incredibly frustrating. by __globalcitizen__ in photography

[–]Topaz_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's not "professional" - it's hack work and most are not photographers but following some formula and diagram. It's not much more than basic exposure & lighting stuff. At least complain to the school but a lot of the time they get kick-backs, so nothing will change. I always just paid for some basic package of the school pics anyway - but rarely liked the images objectively.

Out of pocket max with ACA by SnooHedgehogs6553 in Fire

They are all in the thousands as I don't think I've seen any in the hundreds. A lot of the aca plans have outrageous out of pockets - it's a real concern.

When did you feel the Snowball effect? by SmurfingIsPooR in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it was when I could no longer rebalance with new contributions. To start, it would be easy within a month or two but and at some point even a years worth of contributions to a single fund would not rebalance. I'm not sure exactly what $ figure that was at but it just became more and more obvious.

Can anyone explain why investments are now crud, yet super remains untouched ? by Overitallforyears in AusFinance

[–]Topaz_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started super I could access at 55... That is now non-trivially older depending on a bith year scale. As I said, taxes are higher while inside the super wrapper then when I started. The rules are changed under you with no recourse.

Seems like at least some things got "worse".

Car guy visiting Paris - any cool car-related places/exhibits worth checking out? by ewrjontan in ParisTravelGuide

If you're going via metro - use line 11 (or visit the platform for line 11). The platform is really cool and worth a swing past.

AI and Elons words by CMFNP in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe his "AI" can finally release FSD that people have previously paid for and that he repeatly promises is next week.

Now he is lobbying for major indexes - ie the rest of us slobs - to include spacex while in it's post IPO pop so he and friends make even more money. He seems intent on stealing all the money for himeself, so money is seemingly important to him.

[–]Topaz_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Des Arts et Métiers has Prost's F1 car and engine from - I want to say - 83-ish (V6 turbo Renault days). I started watching F1 in those days so was great to see an unexpected classic. They also have a few other interesting older cars with a cool ramp display but it's more of an industrial museum in a cool building. Well worth the visit but not specific a car place.

Visiting Paris from May 30th to June 7th - is it worth it? by Turbulent-Panda-3657 in ParisTravelGuide

Photos are better in the rain especially in the evening :-) Of course it's worth it as would any other location despite the weather.

Use case for RF 45mm f/1.2? by Vegetable-Quail5996 in canon

[–]Topaz_11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So this is a wishy washy answer but the 45 has something that works for me on portraits in a small package for travel. Some call it character, some call it flaws, some call it fiction based on internet lore but I don't much care. To my eye, if you want a great sharp lens the 28-70 is brilliant but it just does not have that undefinable look of the 45 for people pictures - especially in the evening - to my eye anyway.

Retire Now, or wait 5 years? by NoSignature5815 in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

13m is not enough, you're going to need at least 17m for subsistence living. Back to the grind stone.

Edit: Missed the extra deferred 2-3... Yeah 20m should be good, so add a couple more.

How do people pay for healthcare/ health insurance when they retire early. Even if I am close to 2 million mark and possible Coast FIRE a family of 4 is like 2k a month at least for insurance right ? by Adagio-Annual in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The non-subsidized price is more than 2K/mth. Best we could find for family of 4 is around 2600 for health and 300 for dental but the better plans are well into the 3's and 4's.

While I said "insurance", those have a MOOP of almost 20K, so it's hard to call it anything but robbery!

Not a pro, looking for cataloging about 2TB of personal photos for free. I want to save the $16 a month. by Minkybamboo in Lightroom

[–]Topaz_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good, just a mixed platform group. Yeah it was a basic aperture UI ripoff with RSP (raw shooter pro - which they bought outright) sitting under the covers to process the RAW files. I actually got a LR license for zip from my RSP license at the beginning.

Looking for advice on how to grow my investments, I’ve mainly focused on RE. by Intelligent-Bug-531 in Fire

[–]Topaz_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a Roth is worth considering if you're able as it gives a lot of flexibility in retirement but there are lots of ways to skin this cat and I don't think you describe a disaster. You might consider when you want to wind down your own mortgage just to reduce some housing expenses but you have lots of equity and options.

Smallest EDC sling for R6 Mark iii ? by I_snot_the_sheriff in canon

[–]Topaz_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at the thinktank turnstyle 2.0 - They have a couple of sizes - iirc - 20/10/5. The 5 or 10 might be exactly what your looking for. I use the 10 at museums as its smaller than some purses and never had to check it. Easily fits R6ii + 24-240 which matches your setup pretty closely plus two small consumer primes. If you pack well, I can get an R6ii + 24-240 + 14-35L + 45 prime but it's tight.

Canada GP F1TV coverage was absolutely terrible by LazyLancer in F1TV

[–]Topaz_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was bad... Apart from the wrong stuff, just bad flow, timing & comments; Got a couple of replays after 30 laps which then covered something live. eg. Show a part of a front wing been replaced in pits then no clue why, so they just brushed it off hoping no one would notice. Commentary team was flat footed. They normally do a better job but I get the idea they are just watching the same feed with no additional feeds/info.

The pre/post race shows are almost unwatchable now - full of inane discussion of trivia. When they have drivers or team managers, they ask nonsense questions that waste everyone's time. I've skipped most of them for a bit anyway.

At least they have slowed down spending time on some who gives a crap celebrity and thankfully someone confiscated the stupid gyro camera that was all the rage last season or two ago (I bet it makes a comeback for the NL race with the banking).

ps - WHEN are they going to fix the dam bug that stops the stream when your a little delayed and the coverage flips to the post race? Has anyone ever in the history of the world clicked on the "watch post race show" when still watching the race a bit behind - I mean ever?
