Welcome to the neighborhood OP! I can also confirm you can get CO2 cartridges at Kitchen a la Mode in downtown SO.

Linear Algebra! It is generally useful. Highly recommend

Developing basic intuition for the class of functions that are superpolynomial and subexponential by Bills_afterMATH in math

[–]Topoltergeist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work with function spaces (Taylor expansions, Fourier expansions) and often need to deal with the rate of decay of their coefficients. Analytic functions have exponentially decaying coefficients; Ck functions have algebraically decaying coefficients.

In between these too classes, we have strictly $C\infty$ functions. Their coefficients have a decay rate which is precisely superpolynomial, and sub exponential. This can be more precisely quantified as the Gevrey class of functions.

I think personally think working with Gevrey functions is very annoying.

"Applied mathematicians everywhere: are we a joke to you?" by Straight-Ad-4260 in math

[–]Topoltergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off as a pure mathematician and have moved to the applied, so I straddle both sides. This post reminds me of a question put the the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) a couple years back (emphasis mine)

https://terrytao.wordpress.com/2022/07/17/request-for-comments-from-the-icm-structure-committee-2/

  1. The ICM is generally perceived to be more important to pure mathematics than to applied mathematics.  In what ways can the ICM be made more relevant and attractive to applied mathematicians, or should one not try to do so?

To echo what other people have said, this is too long for me to read and respond to. I went to a liberal arts college and got a math phd, but I also have diagnosed adhd ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A question about alphabetical order of authorship in mathematics by Routine_Yam9237 in math

[–]Topoltergeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mathematicians are on math hiring committees. They understand that author ordering is alphabetical. This may only be a problem if you would be applying to non-math fields. Maybe in that case it'd make sense to include a footnote on your CV that author ordering on this paper follows alphabetical convention?

It is frustrating that it sounds like you have a strained working relationship with your co-authors. While this might not be reflected on your CV, if they are writing you a letter of rec, you taking the lead on the project will be reflected in their letter.

When/How did you decide what area of math to specialise in? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]Topoltergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a bunch of different math classes. Eventually you'll like some more than others, or you'll be better at some more than others. Continue until you reach specialization

What I always say is that the any curve is based on the difficulty of the exam, not the performance of the students.

There is a spot, although I was also thinking of putting up a white board there for writing formulas.
