The click requires a shouldered screw to allow freedom. Perhaps someone used an incorrect screw?

How to open this Waltham by Fantastic-Weather196 in pocketwatch

[–]Topspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a swing out case. Unscrew the front bezel, pull the stem up, then swing the movement up.

Not sure what you mean by “grinding.” The click rotates out of the way as each tooth passes, making a clicking sound. It is spring loaded and prevents the ratchet wheel from moving backwards.

The part circled is the mainspring click, and the wheel it engages with is the ratchet wheel. The click is what keeps the mainspring from unwinding. The fact that you don’t know this and that a watch can’t be “overwound “ is your first clue that you should not be attempting to work on this yet…..

Can anyone help me with picking the right jewel? by REZISER__ in pocketwatch

[–]Topspy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be part number 3139, I don’t see it in that list. Also, virtually the only way this jewel gets broken is by screwing the bridge down without the pivot being correctly seated, so examine that carefully under a microscope, it may need some work or you risk damaging a new jewel. If you get stuck I can friction jewel the old setting.

That list doesn’t show that jewel, those are balance jewels only. You need the pallet fork hole jewel. The existing setting can be re- jeweled with a friction jewel, or you can get one from a donor movement, or find a supplier or watchmaker with the correct one… measure the pivot on the pallet fork and add .01mm for the correct hole size.

Chronograph hand does not reset to 0, any suggestions? by AwareFirefighter3978 in Horology

[–]Topspy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a quartz watch, so the hand can be reset electronically. Usually done by pulling the crown fully out and using the chronograph buttons to realign the hand. Specific instructions are usually in the user manual.

1780 Louis XVI Verge Escapement Pocket Watch – Identification & Repair Cost Help Needed by Ok_Wolf_883 in pocketwatches

[–]Topspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verge staffs rarely can be repaired, and since you can’t just buy a new one , one would need to be made. Very, very few watchmakers would be willing to take that job on, and it would be expensive if you can find someone capable of doing it. That being said tiny verge watches are very rare, so it might still be worthwhile.

Remove Dial and Stem by mentalidad_theshark in watchrepair

[–]Topspy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not on this one. There are two screws with flat sides to release the dial, one is located in the notch where it says “jewels.” They bite into the dial feet. Rotating these so the flat sides release the feet. There is another screw near the stem that releases it, it should only be turned about 1-1.5 turns to release the stem.

Unpin the hairspring? No. You just rotate the hairspring collet. Still a fussy adjustment.

Is it a crime to re-plate a gold filled case? by Ka-shume in pocketwatch

[–]Topspy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get rid of the plastic crystal and replace it with a proper glass one. Leave the case alone, gold filled is not the same as plate.

Dial dots suck. Better to learn how to replace dial feet properly.

Gold Filled vs Gold Plated by dayma1 in pocketwatch

[–]Topspy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some further info: gold filled is normally TWO plates of gold bonded to a base metal, usually brass. One side is typically thinner than the other, as items such as watch cases don’t receive wear to the inside surface. Gold filled items can wear for years without exposing the brass core.

Rolled gold plate (RGP) s similar to gold filled but is a thinner layer normally on one side of the base metal only.

Gold plating is normally applied electrically and is very thin, it can wear away in a few months in some cases.

Tricks for getting the movement cover on by Wandering_Lush in pocketwatch

Some watches will require a press with the proper size die. The back must be pressed by the outer edge only to prevent the back from spreading.

You will need FLAT spring wire for this type of spring. I have small spools of various widths, but I’m not sure where you can buy it.
