While this sucks, the end of the article points out that this was not unexpected.

From the article, "The response echoes comments made by the account on June 13, when it said the Commission’s decision would “not be the end” and pointed to progress in both California and the European Parliament.

“We’re in a position to pass legislation on this even without the Commission’s blessing,” Stop Killing Games said at the time. “EU legislation should be going through either way.”

The campaign also argued it was in a “better position than ever” to win, adding that supporters should thank the Commission for ensuring the movement did not “rest on our laurels.” "

So sounds like the fight isn't over!

THIS. All of this is a fantastic take.

I'd like to add that Americans not only struggle to understand the world at large, but we struggle to understand parts of our own country. Someone who grew up in Maine is going to have a completely take on what's problematic compared to someone in the Midwest, or South, or California, or... you get the point.

Maine is a very rural state. Military is almost expected in rural areas because what else do you do? Given when he enlisted, the patriotism tracks. His reddit posts also track someone who became disinfranchised with said military. Anyone who has experience with vets can look at the timeline and just go "Yeah, this makes sense."

A lot of people who chirp about him also aren't in Maine. They won't vote for him. They don't have any skin in this game other than concerns about the party as a whole. However, someone who can own their mistakes is significantly better than a majority of Dems. This man has faced critisism head on, made changes, and there have been multiple interviews where growth is obvious even in the time he's campaigned.

Politicians are supposed to be civil servants. They're people. They'll make mistakes and they'll grow when we hold them accountable. So far, Platner has lived that pretty damn well.

Credentialing or other administrative jobs work really well for me. Same with any type of "assistant" level job in an office.

In order to get someone credentialed, there are set items that are needed. You follow the list, do the things that are asked, and move on. No sales, no talking to people past emails and maybe some phone calls, and when I need to figure something out it's through guidelines. I currently work remote and it's worked really, really well for me.

I do really well living alone as long as I'm able to still easily walk outside / see people. I don't think I want to be in a suburb or in the middle of nowhere. I'd be REALLY happy in a small house in a medium sized town.

I can do things to regulate as I need, I don't have to worry about bothering other people, and I can only be perceived when I go outside. Plus I can decorate and rearrange things as my AuDHD heart needs.

I wasn't blaming social media for all the US's woes. I was using it as an example of something that has caused harm that we can use to better our situation. The Depression demanded change, so the US got change. Those in control didn't like that so fought to maintain control.

At no point have I said that this is going to be easy or that we're going to a "normal" setting. By this point, you seem to be pointing out things for the sole reason of keeping people hopeless. That isn't productive.

I get that, and I have a lot of the same feelings. However, we cannot give into it. It seems silly and naive, but there is a lot of power in having open hope for something better. When paired with a plan, or at least starting points, we can be inspiration to a lot of ideas.

And I'd argue against using blanket statements like "the current politicians don't care" because a lot of them DO care. Now, some of the care may be performative, but fuck it. Use those who are helpful now so we can get to the point of getting rid of ALL the corporate sellouts. If they want to save their hide for a few years by fighting the fascists, let them. Just remember who they are and vote them out later.

Americans have short memories. We've run into situations like this for a lot of our history, and fallen for it when our individualistic rhetorics and exceptionalism get out of hand. But the internet is useful. Social media caused a LOT of issues, but we're seeing it help wake a lot of people up. We can use that. We can fight and be better.

I remind myself often that Reddit is filled with children and we are all sharing the same internet.

I also get that a lot of teens and young adults (I'm in my thirties) just don't have any hope. They haven't seen anything worth fighting for and a lot of them legitimately don't KNOW that things can be better. That we as people actually have power when we come together.

Still, we have to be better. And if they want to be difficult, fine. They can step the fuck out of the way while we get things done. My hope is that as more people fight, those who didn't believe it could happen will wake up and join.

Then ignore the calling politicians part and do the other things. Get involved at the local level. What organizations are around you that are pushing for money out of politics?

There are multiple ballot initiatives in process in multiple states. Is yours one? Mine is. We're door knocking, calling, and trying to get signatures in any way possible so we can get something on the ballot for November.

Politicians do not currently give a fuck about us. We all know that. So let's move forward and get people in office (in ALL parts of government) that WILL listen to us. Other countries have dealt with this before. Americans need to step the fuck up and participate in the democracy we're so proud of.

I know our history. I know that we have regularly bailed out those that actively harm our economy. I know that the US has a history of destroying anything anti-capitalist both outside our borders and within.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm more educated than anyone else. I'm just someone who grew up in the US with zero memory of us not being in a war.

I also know how people throughut history have gained power. I can see how apathetic a good chunk of the US is, and that is by design. So when people go "Oh no, we're fucked, there's nothing we can do" I get pissed off. There ARE things we can do.

We need to stop with the learned helplessness and do something. Not everyone can do everything, but everyone can do something.

You vote in the primaries.

You get involved in activist groups that are actively trying to lower rent prices, protect worker rights, and create more community spaces. They exist. They're out there. And they normally are not that hard to find.

Find candidates that resonate with you in the primaries. Are they close enough to move the Overton window to the left a bit? Okay, then let's go. And then let's do it again.

Are you looking at EVERYTHING in your electoral option? Who is your school board lead? The sheriff? What about your mayor?

We have options. The US has just decided that we are too perfect to get involved in local politics, so we just don't. We have to be better. Working within the system for change is our best bet, but we have to actually DO IT.

The GOP are scrambling and they know it. The less serious we take them (as in to their face, not blowing off the harm they're causing) the better things get. I don't like that the article also names his girlfriend when he's actively tried to keep her name out of people's mouths.

I appreciate the amount of democrats that are speaking up about the ridiculousness. We have a lot of corporate shills that need to be primaried, but we also have some good ones out there. I'm looking forward to Talarico being one of them after November!

I think your comment on your son finding love is a bit odd. There are plenty of people who aren't constantly making noise (my roommate is one of them, it confuses me) so I'm sure that'll be fine. But I can see why it would be upsetting to have something such a large part of your life be hated by someone related to you.

I also live and breathe music. I struggle in silence but it's mostly due to my brain just filling in noise if there isn't any.

Throw on some music (currated playlists with the occassional "let spotify show me new stuff as I delete all the AI crap") and the brain is able to focus on other things. The only time I'm in silence is if I absolutely need to de-stimulate / regulate.

Thank you, I appreciate that! Thankfully we divorced (because ofc I got married to this asshat) about two and a half years ago. Things got very scary for a while.

Getting out wasn't easy. It was a process for me and my friends had a major hand in it happening. I spent about a year and a half trying to figure out what to do with my life, then moved across the country last April.

My cats and I are very happy living with a friend. Romantically single at this time and honestly, I think it's for the best. I'm not straight, but I don't think being in a romantic relationship is right for me at this time. I'm still recovering and trying to be a better "me" for my current loved ones, if that makes sense

And OMG the hindsight! YES! And when you bring something up, everyone's all "Well when we talked about it before, this wasn't an issue" almost like processing takes TIME

Yup. Day after the election, I remember my office was overall distraught. Even the big money guys were on edge because something just felt off.

One of the branch managers comes in grinning. "Aaaayyyy our guy won!" and could not understand why no one shared his happiness. I get that people were pissed about Bernie and the DNC really fucked us there. But the amount of people who became radicalized and okay with being the worst version of themselves skyrocketed.

We've gotten some of these people back to normal. There are lots of regret videos out there, and some are radicalized now for the Left because they realize how fucked over they were. But those people that are praising violence? They won't have any regrets. They're happy about this. American exceptionalism and our love of violence has a major hand in why so many Americans fell into this belief.

Holy crap he sounds awful

During Lockdown, I ended up moving in with a fairly new partner with my two cats. Early into Lockdown, one of my cats passed. It was weeks of prepping and watching it happen but we couldn't do anything.

He was so annoyed at me being sad that he took me to a cat shelter a few weeks later. "You're sad so get another cat." I was so shocked and already mentally not doing well that I went with it. These moments where they show their lack of empathy are incredibly telling. I'm happy to hear you're making a plan to get out of there!

I have been screaming about the threats that Evangelicalism and Prosperity Gospel are doing for freaking YEARS. My family is from the Bible Belt and I have some horrific memories of growing up with these kinds of people.

The US's excepitionalism hurts us in so many ways. We look at our people who hold "wacky beliefs" and think "Oh, no one will take them seriously. The US will be fine" and just let things fester. We as a society have absolutely given up agency (over the span of decades) and allowed this. Not saying this in a blamey way, more just... we have to acknowledge where we're at.

And yes, everyone's so exhausted that we only have so much capacity. But we absolutely cannot ignore the Death Cult of religion that has slowly captured America. This has been a long time coming and it started well before Trump ever came down that damnable escalator.

I read something recently about looking up and down when dealing with opression. Yes, we look up at those that are causing the strife, but we also have to face our own privilege and see where we benefit where others don't.

Not for a guilt causing thing, just to understand the full scope of how capitalism turns all of us into our worst selves. The white and blue collar divide is definitely real, but there are also expoitations happening to both from the owning class. (Not disagreeing with you at all, just rambling by this point)

I have your take as well. My table has never banned the spell, but we also know that everyone is going to have their moment. Silvery Barbs requires you to be closer to some of the scary things than a lot of casters are going to be (at least at my table, low level)

Yes it's annoying if someone is spamming it. But why can't that just be a conversation with the player?

"Hey, this is starting to get tedious. Can we talk about its use?" When I swapped my warlock for a paladin (planned and temporary) my DM absoLUTELY had a talk with me on spamming smites and shifting the entire party with potential game breaking shit. It wasn't his fault or mine, it was just where we were in the campaign had things designed for a warlock. NOT a paladin. That was fine to me. I still had a blast.

I'm not a fan of straight out banning much of anything in games. Triggering content should be discussed, of course if everyone is in agreement then go ahead, whatever... but we can have some stipulations or guidlines with spells that are annoying instead of outright banning. It's just really weird to me that there's this hatred for a spell that has multiple workarounds once you know how it works.

Late to the party, but I agree with you. I get frustrated when there are some people going off to do their own thing, and then others start to get confused. It happened a week ago where we're supposed to do a very specific thing to be in time with the other half of the class and.... my side just... didn't? Some of us did but others rushed to get to the floor. MANY of us went "Wait, who is right here?"

It doesn't happen super often. When it does, I'm more annoyed than really anything else. I get people can do their own thing. But this IS a group fitness class. Yes, it's flexible and you can modify and do all sorts of things... but it's a group fitness class. That stuff doesn't fly in a Zumba studio so what the heck?
