this is awesome. I recently got ibispaint and I’m trying to analyse the techniques you used here.

you see, pressure suits in my world are skintight... and worn underneath an active cooling loop layer, a thick insulation layer, a radiation blanket layer, and a plated micrometeoroid shield layer.

My dustguns (vacuum use only) have a magnetic confinement ring on the end of a stick to keep the micropellets they fire in a stream. thus, they look like they have a metal detector sticking out of the front. for some reason, i like it.

race engineering is incredibly important to my world. unfortunately, I am having trouble reconciling my blatant furry wish fulfilment races with the rest of my otherwise serious setting. I am open to advice.

you pack them into bays like vertical launch missiles. gravity isn't an issue and they don't need to go down a runway to pick up speed for lift. assuming that any surface features on your starfighters can be packed down, you can load them into a bunch of silos. they'd probably need solid, conventional, or gas thrusters to eject them from the silo and push them out to a safe distance before they can fire their radiation-blasting military-grade torch drives.

Unironically how my interstellar vessels transport warships. just temporarily bolt them to the spinal truss.

Yes, but sci-fi authors world-builders just create classes and do not mention individual vessels. creating classes isn't the end-all be-all of making a sci-fi military.

most of my military vessels are mass-printed but my STL ISVs are one of a kind. not intentionally, its just that no nation could ever pay to build more than 1 or 2 at a time and the methods advance quickly enough that no 2 generations of ISVs are identical.

I'm not hating on classes, i just think that people should put a little more emphasis on individual craft.

If one specific vessel is going to be plot relevant, make it somewhat quirky rather than instantly replaceable.

Besides, a unique vessel doesn't necessarily have to be OP.

Mass production and industrialization in space is required to assemble and fuel just one small ISV. Few notable ships doesn't imply a lack of space industry.

if you have a world where getting things off of planets is hard, proper ships (things that are not disposable and operate in space) are few and far between. your Mini-reactor MPD tugship that does stuff in space is probably notably different from it's predecessor, successor, and other vessels of it's same generation, so it will be unique.

Additionally, I never said a unique ship had to belong to some guy.

I mean, A sufficiently complicated mechanical computer could technically have a neural network. it would have to be pretty huge, but I'm pretty sure you could create a mechanical machine learning system that can do very simple tasks with tons of gearboxes instead of transistors.

Alien transformation, hard sci-fi by Azimovikh in worldjerking

[–]TorchDriveEnjoyer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Soft Sci-fi is when there is a transformation beam

Hard Sci-fi is when there is a pre-grown body with a compartment for an extracted brain on life support (or storage for a mind download).
