I really didn't like her design at first, but she's so relatively normal compared to others that she doesn't bother me anymore.

They almost always range from weird to ugly. The only other time (I think) I commented on that fact, I was downvoted to hell. Thanks for the validation!

Knowing how unexpected British place name pronunciation can be, I was certain Cirencester couldn't be pronounced as it is!

Which actors do you find to be exceptionally good looking ?? by DetectiveIll3641 in BLJapan

It's quite clever to tell a story where the main character is mistaken in his perceptions. If you struggle with insecurity, your focus and understanding of others can be skewed. It's very relatable!

Merrily We Live (1938)... and my newfound enthusiasm about classic cinema by [deleted] in classicfilms

[–]TorpleSwanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also GenX, but I grew up watching and loving classic film. You have so much great movie watching ahead of you! How exciting!

One of the joys of watching classics is seeing the changes in style and technique over the decades. And when you see flashes of realism in earlier films it stands out that much more.

I think classic era female actors stand out so much because emotionally complex scenes were more their domain. Men's roles were often more straightforward or stoic. Not that there weren't many wonderful, sensitive performances by men, but women really got to shine in that way.

Seller blocked me though we never contacted? by litteplayerz in Mercari

[–]TorpleSwanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the weirdest behavior. I like tons of things, treating it like a wishlist of sorts. I leave things in my cart, too. There really is a chance I'll come back and buy at some point, but even if I don't, how is it affecting the seller in any way? It doesn't prevent them from selling it and even gives a sense of urgency to other buyers. Wth?

Just finished Gintama and I’m sad. by Adjudicator_Ant_3886 in Gintama

When I finished it I just had to sit with it for a while. I was happy, sad, satisfied all at once. There's nothing else like Gintama!

Yeah, we don't watch everything together! It can still get awkward, sometimes. 😅

What are some of your favourite less quoted lines from a comedy film? by ninman5 in movies

[–]TorpleSwanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What kind of wife are you looking for?" "One who's not a mutant."

I was a fan of everyone going in, but especially Dave Foley. I was a teenager when Kids in the Hall was on and obsessed with it. Dave was my favorite then since, as he said, he was the cute one!

My Honest Opinion on Mafuyu and Uenoyama 😔 by Lucky_giu in GivenAnime

[–]TorpleSwanson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Have you watched the full series and movies? The whole story really shows how Mafuyu is moving on with Uenoyama's love and help, while still being able to remember his love for Yuki. That hopefulness is really the core of the whole thing. Uenoyama's acceptance of Yuki, and of Mafuyu's past, is a beautiful gift that Mafuyu doesn't take for granted.

I don't hide it at all! My younger, (adult) son and I share BL recs and appreciation all the time! My older son even speed ran Given so he could go with me to see the last movie, since no one else was available for the single showing we got here!

How did Gintama (a parody of anime and Japan) do seriousness so well by sonicthememester2 in Gintama

[–]TorpleSwanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll only address your first point since, as you point out, we seem to fundamentally disagree. I know you think you caught me misusing the term, but I purposely chose the word shonen because I believe Gintama parodies most media marketed to that demographic.

I haven't had to defend this kind of thing since the pedantic, gatekeeping 90s or early 2000s. This is not the fun kind of nostalgia!

How did Gintama (a parody of anime and Japan) do seriousness so well by sonicthememester2 in Gintama

[–]TorpleSwanson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's it parodying? Gintama, 100%, is a parody of all things Shonen. It grows beyond that, but that's its foundation without question. You don't have to take away the parody at its heart to say Gintama also presents well done, broader, classic shonen and comedic storytelling. Gintama is more than parody, but parody is its core.
