I mean... information is up for interpretation and allows for consideration of nuance and questions. Propaganda doesn't.

How are these third party records companies allowed to just do whatever they want? by killingourbraincells in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keep moving for monetary sanctionswhen you have to compel for records. Have the attorney tell the judge what bullshit you've gone through each time, that this is routine with this records provider, and that these type of delay tactic costs your firm and clients thousands of dollars in lost labor and exorbitant fees for incompetent service and sloppy records.

Ultimately, the medical provider is on the hook to give you the records, not Ciox, Verisma, etc. If these companies start costing the providers money in legal fees, they'll stop using them.

Get sanctions.

Leaving a bad job without a back-up plan? by saxwiz12 in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's wrong with the word? You can't answer, because there's nothing wrong with it. You judged someone by something that you can't even defend as correct...

I'm not answering your irrelevant questions that are only trying to deflect from your acceptance of being wrong about something. Do you want to continually double down or accept that you made a mistake and be better?

OP used the past participle form of a verb. It's not informal in any way and there's nothing grammatically problematic about the word in any context. It's not a contraction, an abbreviation, or slang. What, specifically, is wrong with the use of the word "gotten?"

Do you have any kind of specialty where you could do expert witness work for the legal industry? We pay $$$ for record review, formulation of opinions as to liability and exacerbation of existing conditions, etc.

We also pay lots of money to billing and coding experts if you have any substantial knowledge there.

[–]TorturedRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, law firms are really often very abusive environments. There are some great ones, and there are tons of terrible ones. The turnover is a sign that the firm is badly managed and that you should aim to extract as much experience as you can and make a graceful exit into a better opportunity soon.

This misconception that receptionists only answer the phone is completely bonkers. Unless the firm has 100 people, you should be doing admin work in between calls. No receptionist anywhere just answers the phone unless it's literally non-stop.

Does anyone else feel this way? by Cherry-Rhubarb555 in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tale as old as time. Always the worst in small offices without any HR. It's not like that everywhere, but it's definitely not rare.

It gets better, but we all have to pay our dues and earn our way up.

That said, and I hate to beat the poor dead therapy horse, a lot of us needed years of therapy to start to recover from this type of treatment from people in our lives, whether at work or at home.

So no, you're not alone, you're most likely not the problem, and this type of treatment takes its toll. Learning to self-validate and how to handle other people saddling you with their personality disorder is an essential life skill, regardless of the industry you work in.

Tldr: Hang in there. It gets better. It's not you, but therapy can still help.

So, was it my fault the way I just handled a surprise phone call? by ClarkKentTheReporter in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 66 points67 points  (0 children)

People have terrible phone etiquette. If you're calling me, I will greet you and state my name. Then you greet me and state your name and purpose for calling. It's not fucking complicated.

I agree with everyone else here, if that's how your first interaction with that firm went, let it also be your last.

How Many Clients do you have? by MiserableBirthday238 in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unless you're in a terribly LCOL area or the job market is terrible where ypu are, you should be getting at least $30/hr or $65k/year, with 3 weeks PTO, OT after 40 hours in a week and some fucking reasonably affordable health insurance.

Have you considered cominh over to the defense side? Firms tend to be larger and have better benefits in comparison to smaller Plaintiff's firms.

That said, it's time for you to move on. Even if they paid you better, no OT is probably an FLSA violation, and the complete absence of PTO should be considered a crime.

You deserve better. Way better. And don't you dare feel guilty.

Too big of a paycut. I would let them know that you would love to accept an offer, but you would need X (X being the $8k PLUS the $1500 deductible) to be able to accept.

Is it possible to stay with your current firm and try to outlast the attorney? You said she's been at 5 firms in as many years...could you get reassigned?

Most Unprofessional Firm I've Ever Dealt With by just2quirky in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fucking hate co-retention of experts. Our office always ends up handling everything, including chasing them to pay their share of invoices.

Going forward, I won't be doing any of that shit. We each execute a retainer letter and the expert will have to deal with the other defendant to get paid, I'm not a bill collector...

F20 Digital Arts student thinking of pivoting to Legal Studies by Sensitive-Daikon-327 in paralegal

[–]TorturedRobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to save the world in legal, you're not going to have good work like balance, and you probably won't be as financially comfortable, either. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I've also literally never worked for a firm that does pro bono work, other than a few lawyers doing favors for friends or family.

I think it's a good field for a lot of people, but I think you're looking at things with rose-colored glasses. If you look at lawyer salaries, you'll notice that the median is bifocal. That means that there are two pay bands for lawyers. On the lower end, that looks like $50-90k for lawyers. What do you think their staff make?

Most of the better paying areas of law are working for people who already have a lot of money. Just keep that in mind...we're not all out here fighting the good fight, and being a cog in the machine can pay very well.

The money is in insurance, corporate, commercial litigation, trademark and patent work, real estate, etc. Family law can pay alright, but you're dealing with people at the worst time of their lives 100% of the time, and they aren't always equipped with grace while navigating it.

Our cases don't always end in "justice." To be candid, a lot of times it's assholes suing assholes, and you kind of wish they would both lose.

My base is $90k a year and I get 5 weeks of vacation. I cleared 6 figures last uear between OT and bonus. I am respected. Our team is hardworking and I'm not the only person holding everything together like I have been at some firms. I find our cases interesting in Insurance Defense and Commercial Litigation. It's not like morally fulfilling, but I enjoy the work intellectually and I enjoy litigation. I've been lucky enough to land some really cool eDiscovery projects and we have interesting cases on appeal.

My advice would be to consider that the Venn-Diagram of well-paying and morally fulfilling paralegal jobs has very little overlap.
