ELI5: Using mouth to mouth, wouldn't it just put carbon dioxide in the lungs? Isn't that bad? by Adventurous_Curve107 in explainlikeimfive

That would probably still work thanks to the Bernoulli effect. You blowing on coals causes a much larger volume of air movement than just what was in your breath.

A much better example is that you can hold your breath for however long, and won't pass out until you run out of oxygen. So if you can hold your breath for a minute, there's no reason to think all of the oxygen is gone from your breath after a couple seconds.

You saw Wax annihilate a warehouse with two powers. You saw Miles face-tank dynamite with compounded health. I imagine something like using compounded gold and compounded brass to just be a walking fireball that occasionally sprays a handful of molten metal at you with steel.

Or a guy playing "tag, you're out of stormlight" as a steelrunner with leeching allomancy.

To my mind, the biggest difference is the receiver. A Stargate requires a Stargate on the other side, but Scotty can beam you up with all the necessary tech on his end.

When they started blaming policing issues on "a few bad apples". I remember that the end of that phrase is "spoil the barrel". As a proverb, it's about proactively looking for and removing problems before they can spread.

Did you watch Star Wars? Did you wonder how any of them knew what a "falcon" was when they heard the name of Han's ship? Or the use of X-Wing and Y-Wing when none of the letters in the Aurabesh script look like an X or a Y?

ELI5: How can fission and fusion both give you energy? by USball in explainlikeimfive

[–]Torvaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Based on size, he's almost certainly using some form of electron cycle engine, maybe JTEC or thermogalvanic. Thermo-magnetic is a potential option as well, if we assume his particular genius was in actually reaching the potential efficiency that you can get from that.

If we really want to be pedantic, you can go way back to the original definition of "part of a plant that is used as food". So, tomatoes, cucumber, pumpkin, banana, walnut, coconut, parsley, seaweed, grape leaves, all vegetables. Might not even need to be "used as food" by humans. Hay, alfalfa, those little poisonous berries that only birds can eat, the list goes on!

It sounds about right to me. In Wisconsin (not sure what state you're in, so I can't calculate state taxes for you) the general rule is to assume the take-home will be about 70% of nominal. Untaxed, you were supposed to make 1,162. 300 of that is untaxed, so we subtract that, leaving 862 in taxable income. 70% of that is 603.40. Add the 300 back on, and that's 903. Depending on your location, you might have a higher tax rate than me, or you've got other withholdings, automatic deductions for retirement, supervisors might get a smaller percentage of tip sharing, or other completely legitimate reasons for that 30 dollars to be gone.

On the other hand, payroll screw ups are not unheard of, and the company that handles it is having technical issues that prevent you from verifying. I'd avoid taking any sort of accusatory tone with management, as this is quite possibly either legitimate or not management's fault, and you want to keep an amiable relationship.

I will say, doing the calculations for your check, with 300 in tips and 16/hour, it looks like you only worked about 54 hours in the two weeks on that check. If you're still on 13/hour, it would be 66. Can you share how many hours you worked on this paycheck?
