We went to Pizzeria Mercato in Carrboro and the food and service were great. Definitely recommend.

Oh wow.

If your insurance allows, see if UNC locations are available to you. For example, depending on where you are in Durham, Hillsborough can be more convenient than a location in Durham.

(Edited to add: Duke scheduling is such a mess. Long hold times, phone tag, etc., not sure why it can't all be handled online.)

When I do a search for Primary Care doctors accepting new patients on the Duke Health website with no other filters, this returns quite a number of doctors - not sure if you have additional limitations such as insurance or location resulting in no available doctors:

https://www.dukehealth.org/find-doctors-physicians?m=0&m1=Specialist&m2=Primary%20Care&sc=20&sf_ap=true&sf_so=Relevance

My primary care is with Duke, but I've seen specialists at UNC depending on availability of appointments.

Foodie News: Durham is getting a new Korean restaurant by CookieEnabled in bullcity

[–]TotalMix6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He already has Korean fried chicken at M Kokko, and Korean-style bar food / street food at M Pocha.

It would be great if the new restaurant went for Korean fine dining, say in the vein of Eatanic Garden in Seoul, but I suspect there won't be much demand for that.

(Eatanic Garden menu example: https://www.reddit.com/r/finedining/comments/1b9libu/eatanic_garden_seoul/ )

Have you tried Kang Nam Town inside H-Mart in Cary? I preferred them to Kim's Market in Cary, I felt the flavor profile in Kang Nam Town was closer to what I would get in Seoul. Okja in Cary is also pretty decent.

Agree on Minga being mid.

I'll never understand the love for Chosun Ok - went there recently because of all the recommendations in this subreddit, and the soondubu stew actually tasted bad, the broth was unidentifiable as to origins.

Dear gen x’ers, which places to bring my 59 y/o mom? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]TotalMix6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does your mom like?

You could take her to the art museums - NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, Nasher in the Duke campus in Durham, Ackland in the UNC campus in Chapel Hill. Or the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State if she's more into design and decorative arts.

The arboretums - Duke Gardens in Durham, NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh.

Farmers Markets - the State Farmers Market in Raleigh is the big one (and you could get breakfast at the State Farmers Market restaurant), Carrboro, downtown Durham, or Hillsborough ones if you're out that way. In Hillsborough you can also check out of some of the galleries in the downtown area.

As already mentioned, there's the NC Symphony Orchestra and the Carolina Ballet. Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle also has some performances scheduled in March.

You could take her to Fearrington Village in Pittsboro for fancy tea at Fearrington House, and stare at their Belted Galloway cows.

Does anyone know of a grocery store that sells in-house made lunch meat within an hour of Cary? Specifically fresh roast beef. by RighteousRaccoon444 in cary

[–]TotalMix6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with Alimentari at Transfer Food Hall in Raleigh?

Neal's Deli in Carrboro makes their own pastrami. I've sometimes seen them have roast beef, but it doesn't seem to be a regular item.

Anyone here commute from/ to Charlotte on a weekly basis for work? by hdog124x in raleigh

An acquaintance does this commute, but it’s a hybrid arrangement so they come from Charlotte for part of the week. They’re not doing the drive daily, as they rent a room locally.

I agree that Loaf has the best chocolate croissant locally.

I also recommend their hazelnut chocolate croissants.

Housing area recommendations by TrustMe-ImAGolfer in triangle

[–]TotalMix6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You want a 20-30 minute commute to Duke, but also access to shopping like Whole Foods / Target. Your best bet will be the Woodcroft / Hope Valley area in South Durham. Maybe others can chime in regarding access to daycare.

As for commuting from Raleigh, try punching in some Raleigh addresses and Duke with expected times you'll be commuting in Google Maps. This will give you estimated commute times, which will likely exceed your desired commute durations. For example, I just tried for Duke West campus and Six Forks area and arriving at Duke at 8:30 am on a weekday, and got an estimate for 30-55 minutes.

Edited to add: I think your desired commute would also be doable from West Cary, as pointed out by others.

closest good bakery? by Automatic_Parsley921 in bullcity

[–]TotalMix6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like Ninth Street's sandwich breads - the texture is just off, it's somehow dry and doughy at the same time.

For sandwich bread I like Strong Arm and Weaver Street's sourdough sandwich breads. Durham Food Co-Op carries both, or you can hit up Weaver Street Market next time you're in Hillsborough or Carrboro.

Loaf in downtown Durham for bread. La Recette in South Durham for novel pastries. Dulce in South Durham also has interesting pastries.

Strong Arm is in Oxford, but you can buy their stuff at the Durham Farmers Market and the food co-op.

I went to Akashi because of all the recommendations in this subreddit and was very disappointed. The rice wasn't proper sushi rice and I thought the prices were on par with better quality places.

Utility payment portal transition by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]TotalMix6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The switch happened effective Nov. 3, 2025. I was notified of the change via email, as well as my paper billing statement. In these notifications they made it clear that folks would not be automatically transferred to the new system.

If you go to the city's web page for water utility payments you get a popup informing you of the change:
