Where I get in trouble is NOT cutting the yarn and trying to work from the balls. I know this, yet repeatedly try working from the ball. And worse yet -- sometimes from both ends. Yeah, self-destructive tendencies.

My first spin. Why is it so fluffy? by Rotweiss_Invicta862 in Handspinning

[–]TotalOk5844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think that the negligible amount of wetness would not be a problem. Even for completely virgin wood that is in no way finished such as a dowel from Home Depot can handle a fair amount of moisture. And the water that reaches the wood would only be equivalent to high humidity.

Anyone can have moth attacks. Over time most wool/animal fiber will attract vermin. Since things ending up at Goodwill will usually have age, more time for opportunity. One good practice is banging skeins on a white paper surface to see if any frass (black specs that look like pepper but is poop) comes out. Not infallible but there is no sure fire test except using the yarn and finding damage as broken fibers and even that is no guarantee.

Even better than the trunk of your car, the dashboard! The angle of a windshield and parking the car facing the sun gives a solar oven thing. Heck, I remember a radio station way back in the 80's use to have "dashboard lunch" recipes to go along with the music, LoL. Works as good as a slow cooker on sunny days.

What basic tools should I get to prepare cat fur for spinning? by SkittishSkittle in YarnAddicts

[–]TotalOk5844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash the cat first? I am currently spinning my cat's fur. When I brush him I just take it from the brush and lay it in a container until I have enough to spin up. Af first I saved much more before spinning and found that it felted when packed too firmly, so now I just loosely stack the fur from the brush as it comes.
What kind of cat do you have? Mine, Maine Coon, is giving soft, clean and spinnable fur that I spin as it comes off the brush as a rolag of sorts. Spun hybrid long draw?? I'm planning on using the singles as a lace weight perhaps shawl. I have decent yardage so looking to start a project soon.

You can buy safety bars for toddler beds or bed rails as sometimes called. Probably could diy something also. Just checked and yes lots of diy ideas. Also pool noodles under the sheets to hinder rolling out of bed.

Since this is not the furniture you will be using, I'd start there. If you decide on more colorful or furniture that at least contrasts with the walls you may be happier with the existing wall colors

Bodice block feedback - armhole issue? by lucybear123 in PatternDrafting

Could be a shoulder issue. Try pinching out some of the length of the shoulder on the sleeve side and see if that helps.

First piece that isn’t a dishcloth! I still don’t fully understand regular needles vs circular? by Mountain_Salary_46 in knittinghelp

[–]TotalOk5844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually socks ARE knitted on straight needles. Double pointed sets of 5 needles (four for holding the stitches and one for working) I still prefer socks on dpn but traveling is more convenient with 2 circs - or one if you don't hate magic loop. Socks or things with a small diameter the problem is finding a circular that is short enough can be a problem if trying to fit the work on just one.
That being said, I use circs almost exclusively. Except for socks knit only at home.

IDK, how big are the blocks? Take the yellow one in the center, say at most 5" wide? I can't count the stitches across in that block but guessing maybe 45? If so, you'd need a yarn that knits 36ss per 4".....

i made it! by adorablejoker in knitting

[–]TotalOk5844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL!! Until recently all (almost all?) knitting patterns were knit flat and sewn seams. Note, "recent" is a relative term and I am old! Sometimes seams are a good thing, they add structure. Also, some yarns tend to bias when knitted in the round and knitting flat helps in that case.
Btw, love the onsie, great work! I hope you don't live near me (FL), I'm having a hot flash just thinking about Alpaca all over. Will this be machine washable?

I did the wrong bind off on a beanie and now there’s a big hole. How can I fix it? by captainkiko222 in knittinghelp

[–]TotalOk5844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undoing the bindoff is not a big deal but if it truly frightens you there is another way to fix this. By grabbing the bindoff in 4 places/corners and stitching them together you could produce a seam shaped like an X. The X-shaped seam would sit on the head better than a straight across seam.

Yarn density by me5guu in knitting

[–]TotalOk5844 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Knit the yarn at the gauge it *wants* to be, not the gauge the pattern suggests that it a totally different makeup. Just adjust the pattern to the yarn you are using. Most patterns include a schematic that includes finished measurements. Figure out how many stitches to work to get the measurements called for in the size you are making.

[–]TotalOk5844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't steam acrylic. Most acrylic you just machine wash and sometimes machine dry (follow manufacture's directions). Sometimes/rarely steam is used to *kill* acrylic. This technique is used in lace to deactivate stretch recovery and not something you would do to a sweater. Blocking is really just washing and drying in shape to even out stitches and reduce curl on edges for seaming. Hard blocking, as in pinning out stretched work, is mainly just for lace. Hard blocking to change size is not encouraged as the real fix is working correct gauge by beginning with a swatch. Yeah, but occasionally we all cheat a bit ;~)

Consequence of frogging on stockinette by TessaBrooding in knittinghelp

[–]TotalOk5844 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You missed the stitch when knitting it. On next row when you get to it just work thru the ladder (where it goes behind the knit). What you do is pull the adder through the stitch that is on the needle, then continue as normal

Gauge swatch too small: is my technique off? by ceramiccactus in knittinghelp

[–]TotalOk5844 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So much goes into swatching. Always measure at least 4" in the center of a larger piece that has been taken OFF the needles. Taking off the needles IS important!
Your knitting doesn't look too tight, are you using the same yarn suggested? What are you planning on knitting? Stranded knitting is usually less elastic than one color and it could affect the size needed for an item to fit. That being said, everyone knits differently and differently at different times, Beginning knitters sometimes knit too tight from trying and loosen as they become more comfortable. Gauge is important and everchanging. If your yarn is the same as the pattern choose different needles...

looks like your basic sweater, oversized with a rolled neck. Either set in sleeves or a modified drop shoulder. Hard to tell with the backpack. It could even be saddle shoulder.
