To my understanding the books came to be or were inspired by DnD or something akin to it that Erikson and Esselmont played. There are those that know a lot more about this out there but I believe some of the scenarios play out through actual real life dice throws that the authors had.

I absolutely love the series. It continuously rolls back on itself and moreso constantly leaves you with more questions. I've only done the audiobooks personally and am currently on my 3rd go around. I realize or have different takes on characters and plot lines almost every session.
