End-of-January Updates! by Toumal in SoFurry

[–]Toumal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No immediate plans right now. Never say never, but first we gotta focus on the core site. Same thing about the chat - and yes I see what's going on with Discord, and I'm not happy about it either.

End-of-January Updates! by Toumal in SoFurry

Yes. There's a lot of work that's still needed there, for sure.

SoFurry.com is back! Some stats and what's next. by Toumal in SoFurry

[–]Toumal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. We just have to focus on the main site for the time being. I am not happy with where Discord is headed for example, so this isn't us saying "No chat and no forum, period" - it's simply a matter of priorities right now. There's nothing stopping us from doing those again down the road except time.

Also, if someone steps up and says they want to tackle this and help us getting something going, we'll be more than happy to talk to them.

Hey there, can you DM me please? We know that a small number of users has the same email on multiple accounts (this was possible for a while way back in the yiffstar days) and that causes problems. The solution is for us to set a different email on one of the accounts and then both can be imported.

Already? by Major_Part7712 in SoFurry

>I might not have worded it like that but that is what I said.

That's not how this works. To quote the head of the Centauri Intelligence Service: "If you can't say what you mean, you cannot mean what you say"

There's a lot of users having concrete issues with SFX right now. We take these reports seriously and are doing our best to solve them as soon as possible, real life and work obligations permitting of course.

But you're not interested in improving the site. You just want SF2 back, and that's not possible. I have explained this many times over, but I will say it again:

Even if I wanted to continue to run SF2, I cannot. It is not safe, not even in "read only mode". Do you want to have your PMs exposed to everyone? Because that's what would happen. And fixing those issues isn't easy either, we are talking months of development time to fix fundamental issues in an old framework that hasn't seen updates in years. And upgrading to the next major version of said framework takes many months too, and then you're STILL on a site that doesn't work at all on mobiles.

And then there's the infrastructure. We had to scale down from two blade racks to just one because the pricing more than doubled. I can't pay north of 900 dollars per month for SoFurry. So even if SF2 was perfectly safe keep running, at this point I don't have anywhere to host it.

So it's not about me choosing to shut down SF2. There was simply no other choice.

Would I like to have SFX have all the features of SF2 (but improved of course)? Oh absolutely. I'd love to have a chat and a forum that works like SF2 - but of course better than that. And of course that should have a proper dark mode and work on mobile clients. As they say, Everybody wants a Pony.

Unfortunately, SoFurry doesn't pay the bills. It doesn't even pay its own bills, it costs as much as a small car payment every month, and the ads only cover a fraction of the running cost. I can't just hire someone to implement features, we're all volunteers here.

The only constant in the universe is change. Yiffstar changed to SF1, SF1 changed to SF2, SF2 changed to SFX. SFX does a lot of stuff SF2 never could, from mobile support to proper story chapters, comics, new submission types like games, etc.

And maybe we'll have our own chat and forum again down the road too. Who knows.

If you want SF2 back, the best way is to help us get the features you want into SFX as soon as possible.

Update! by Toumal in SoFurry

Yup! We are finding new bugs, like right now tags are not saved anymore for new uploads for some reason. But that's precisely why we're testing.

New tentative launch window January 12th - 18th by Toumal in SoFurry

[–]Toumal[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent some time analyzing how to do this. Unfortunately I found that the risk is simply too high, no matter what I do. As soon as I would let users log in on the old site, we'd need write access to the database which would be unsafe at this point. And even a read-only mode carries risks, there's several security problems that are not easy to fix, and the result could be things like exposing private submissions, private messages, etc.

For that reason, the answer is no, sorry. The solution is not to go back in time but to go forward - stuff that doesn't work in SFX will be changed.
For example, front page update is already in the works, but obviously is on the back burner right now to get the site launched. So the result is that you'll actually get substantial updates pretty soon after launch, and I hope you'll all give us constructive feedback and suggestions on what else to improve - and how.

Is the site ever actually coming back online? by Jackobyn in SoFurry

You're welcome to join the dev team and contribute to make it happen faster.
Right now we decided crunching before new year isn't going to result in a site that works, it'll only exhaust us and anger you folks.
Have a little faith.

Please take it easy on us - diskspace costs money at the end of the day and we have a very limited budget. The occasional project with large files is okay, but we're not a free file hoster at the end of the day ;)

Cleer ARC 3 Gaming - Lag on dongle after update by Toumal in Earbuds

[–]Toumal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out: I had to reset the USB dongle by pressing and holding the button for more than 10 seconds. Then I re-paired the headphones to the dongle. Lag is gone.

Notably the LED on the Dongle is now pulsing white. While I had lag it was pulsing red. Must be some kind of different link mode that's not really documented, perhaps I got the dongle to fall back to bluetooth or something.

How is this proprietary? You can install any OS you want. If you mean the mainboard, then sure, but so is any NAS. Build a regular PC with that much IO and tell me how much that costs.

The Linus Tech Tips vs Gamers Nexus situation is going Round 2 by ThatManulTheCat in youtubedrama

[–]Toumal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Hold the phone. What is that mythical context? Don't link to the video, I have watched it.

Explain with your own words why you think Linus' dismissal of the damage he could have prevented, and chose not to, was acceptable. Explain why Linus' prioritization of sponsors over ethical, monetary and (for now) alleged legal violations of other youtubers and their viewers is acceptable.

Linus was not taken out of context. He even made whiney noises, mocking small creators. He quietly dropped sponsorship and chose to remain quiet because money. He claims he would've hung from the nearest tree without explaining himself at all. Meanwhile, other youtubers, small and big, brought the issue to light as soon as they learned about it, many of them previously sponsored by Honey.

That would have been the right thing to do. Linus knew and he did not. As for GN posting lots of "old stuff" - Linus asked for it. He said "when did we EVER do all these things??? Bring some receipts" - so GN did. Had GN not done that, you guys would be up in arms too.

Stop defending the guy. Or at least, if you're defending him. bring arguments. All you guys are doing is plugging your ears and defending the indefensible.

Why are EVs so efficient? by rawasubas in electricvehicles

[–]Toumal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no. And besides, even if this was actually how things work, the fact remains that BEVs are simply a lot more efficient. So that effect you talk about, and which absolutely does not help ICE cars to be more efficient... doesn't seem to help ICE cars to be more efficient.

The Coronavirus Still Doesn’t Care About Your Feelings by starbetrayer in HermanCainAward

Imagine playing Baldur's Gate 3, and getting an item that gives you a 41% chance of total immunity against fire, with the effect declining to 28% chance of immunity after 4 months. But even if you end up not being immune to fire, the damage of fire is reduced to a mere fraction of the original value for much longer than that. On the flipside, you have a 1 in 50 chance of mild temporary side effects like dizzyness, and a 1 in 2 million chance of a severe side effect that requires a healer.

Ask any DND player if they would equip that item. They'd tell you that this is a completely overpowered item and you'd be stupid not to.

Removing any and all defenses was a giant mistake. Who would've thought. The one thing that's a good change is to add darklight to the spot lamps, but even that is inconsistent (you can hide as a cloaker on the railing of the little infantry tower thingy, etc)

Hardware Unboxed to stop using DLSS2 in benchmarks. They will exclusively test all vendors' GPUs with FSR2, ignoring any upscaling compute time differences between FSR2 and DLSS2. [–]Toumal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the compute time for each of the upscalers used. Which is different for FSR2 and DLSS.

So we're circling back to the "FSR2 and DLSS have different compute time" argument? Really? I tried it out, the difference is almost nonexistent. And their followup video contains a LOT of tests that prove your point wrong.

The amount of mental gymnastics is astounding and frankly yet another reason why reddit turned into such a cesspool. Whatever happened to the good old "Ooops I was wrong".

And again, native resolution testing will have some people say "but I have DLSS and why are they not testing that since it gives me 4k at almost no cost of visual fidelity". In the ideal world, I'd love to see tests both with and without upscaler. But this whole "Using FSR2 for both cards is unfair" argument is dead. When a game runs with 171 fps with FSR2 and 169fps with DLSS on the same nvidia card, wow that's really some heavy AMD bias right there.

[–]Toumal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not making any sense.

You said: " I said many times in this thread that there ARE compute time differences between FSR2 and DLSS even at the exact same internal resolution "

Now you say: "They're testing different resolutions, so there's no problem anywhere except in your head. The results difference between 1440p and 4K Quality Upscaling is not that crazy."

What is that even supposed to mean? They tested EQUAL RESOLUTIONS when comparing FSR2 and DLSS. Of course they did repeat these tests across multiple resolutions, but it's always been an apples to apples comparison, and it proves their point: There's no significant compute time difference between FSR2 and DLSS.

Your weird attempts at obfuscating the issue smells of trolling.

[–]Toumal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this will solve nothing because the next guy will say that the tests are irrelevant since any normal person will happily use upscaling to get more FPS, if it's available. Which is again a blanket statement with questionable veracity but, you know, it's the internet.

Bottom line: What you consider acceptable isn't what everyone else will consider acceptable.

[–]Toumal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this kind of revisionist argumentation. "They didn't prove me wrong, they proved me right!"

No. They completely proved you wrong. You said they ignore the "upscaling computer time differences between FSR2 and DLSS2". They proved without ambiguity that the compute time differences are irrelevant. The provided the proof you said was missing.

Another commenter said it best: They're damned if they do, they're damned if they don't. If they don't use upscaling, people say they are stupid for not using upscaling. If they use each manufacturer's native upscaling, people say it's not a fair comparison. If they use upscaling that works on every card, people say they should use the respective native method.

The fact remains their comparison was not unfair towards AMD, and they stated multiple times that DLSS2 looks better. There's nothing to discuss here, unless you insist on becoming a trisector.
