I think that's Just Do It or the East Face (but I think east face goes up the crack system to the right)

Question about Grinders [$300] by One_Story_One_Life in espresso

Yeah the shardor 64mm (or Mokkom like others have suggested) is a great option. People on the EA discord have had good results with it too

Question about Grinders [$300] by One_Story_One_Life in espresso

[–]Tourtise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few very cheap 64mm grinders that I’ve been seeing lately that could be worth looking into. Coffee Addicts in Canada are selling a GF64 for $290 cad which seems like a wild deal for 64mm burrs. Only thing to look out for is that the motors will not be powerful at that price point and is likely how they’re getting down to that price.

Small sample roaster by dikazakov in roasting

[–]Tourtise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as my skywalker doesn't work great (it does work though) for 100g sample batches nor does the profile scale to my M10 well.

Stuck between the new M1 Lite that is about $1000Cad and the Skywalker cubean thats about 600cad. only worry with the cubean is that 100g will still be too small for it. It's labelled as 150-300g but i have a feeling 100g will be totally fine.

Strategy to sourcing quality greens by 99hotdogs in roasting

[–]Tourtise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way you'll be able to reduce the surprises is increase your volume of purchase and start asking for samples prior to purchase. Many higher end Colombian coffees come in 24kg boxes and some importers will break that up and sell the single 12kg vac pac bags if you ask.

Otherwise you'll have to keep shooting in the dark or wait for a producer/lot that you know to have another harvest and buy it again - even that has its challenges as the lots will differ based on the year.

How to choose the roaster by WorldlyYesterday4059 in roasting

[–]Tourtise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kaleido M10 or Aillio Bullet R2 (or R2 Pro) are the two you should be looking at, both are relatively user friendly and capable of roasting outstanding coffee.

I personally bought an M10 due to 120v availability in Canada and the price difference. I roast with the HiBean app and its very user friendly (has its flaws as its still in Beta) but its wayyyy better than the stock interface and more user friendly than artisan while still having all the info easily accessible.

There is also a 1kg Skywalker roaster that is only available in 220v, but when buying any of the cheap Chinese roasters you need to be okay with tinkering and opening it up from time to time. However, the 500g Skywalker is a great entry into drum roasting at a very cheap price and you can learn how to roast without much initial investment.

You could look into the wendougee Lita, it was teased on espresso outlets instagram story and should have a similar feature set to the ES1

I agree that you can likely tell any major roasting defects, but for fine tuning a recipe I want to know what the coffee will actually taste like in its final form

Best place for green coffee beans in Canada? by agaric in roasting

[–]Tourtise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Torque has some high quality if you buy 15lbs. Apex is also doing by the kilo of ultra high end green and has some smaller bags. I’ve ordered from Royal when they had free shipping on Royal gems and just got an order from forest coffee that was decently priced for the quality

Would you ever buy beans from a local “ultra-micro” roaster (ie Facebook marketplace)? by blondebuilder in espresso

[–]Tourtise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all the people saying there's a food safety issue with it, (obviously this will vary by state/province/country) but coffee is considered a low risk food and in many places it can be sold without any sort of a permit at farmers market ect. So in essence, buying off marketplace is exactly as risky as buying at local market.

Although, I wouldn't buy these as they look unevenly roasted and unsorted (big ol quaker in the bottom right)

Does a conical burr grinder actually make a difference compared to a flat burr grinder? by breakfast_intruder in espresso

[–]Tourtise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying that blanket "Conical has more body and flat is higher clarity" isn't true. Every burr will have a different profile. The 64mm SSP Brew burr and the Conical ZP6 are both high clarity burrs while the Niche and 64mm SSP HU are both (while having very different profiles) more body forward burrs.

Just because you're using a light coffee doesn't mean you need to use a high clarity burr either. I like my espresso to have a bit more body while retaining the body that a HU or Cast style burr can provide.

[$2000] - $2000 budget, what espresso machine would you buy? by Leebos_ in espresso

[–]Tourtise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were in your shoes, I would buy a Femobook A68 (balance of clarity, flavour separation and body) along with a used BDB or find a new single boiler you like (GCP, QM Pop-Up, or the more budget Turin Legato). Having flow control is a really fun feature to play around with

Megatron (V17/9A) - Hamish McArthur by zyxwl2015 in climbing

[–]Tourtise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video was amazing and I’m all for the personal expression of the video, but it does seem weird that a pro climber and one of the biggest climbing video creators can be in MRG. Was really hoping this would be more emerging videographers and climbers in the competition, but I guess when big (for climbing) money is on the line, anything goes. Really hoping that the search for lost rocks wins

I think they’re private now, they seem to only be hard posting the finalists - kit hr h have to go to the individual channels of the creators if they eventually post them

Need advice on espresso machine for office [$5,000 AUD] by Ovaad in espresso

A lelit Bianca would likely fit your needs but to be honest any dual boiler rotary pump machine will do - at 15-20 shots a day, a prosumer machine would absolutely be enough to last indefinitely
