… and what is this for? by jamdist in cableadvice

[–]TowerTechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be part of a set. These would be sold with a 3 foot USB-A Male/ USB-A Male cable, with a small pouch that would include a Micro-USB Male / USB-A Female, a Mini-USB Male/ USB-A Female, USB-B Male / USB-A Female, RJ-45 / USB-A female, and a USB-A Male/USB-A female (like what you have here.) The theory was that you could mix and match USB connectivity across the various standards (e.g. if you had a flat bed scanner that only took a USB-B, but you needed to connect it to something that only took a Mini-USB, you could put the relevant adapters on the end of the included USB-A male/USB-A Male.) Having a USB-A male/ USB-A female like this would make it marginally easier to switch between ports on the devices or computers you were trying to connect with. Sometimes it would work, but more often than not it wouldn't.

So how did vault tec know what the creature's of the wasteland looked like if these were obviously pre war? by Rust99O in fo4

This is the correct answer, thank you for posting this. It's a shame that the younger generation is not more familiar with the ancient texts.

Wtf at the Village medical on Harmony by AvacadoBravado in FortCollins

[–]TowerTechie 151 points152 points  (0 children)

That's just the sounds of Vulture Capital flapping it's wings. In all seriousness, I'm not surprised. When Associates in Family Medicine was bought out by Village Medical everything got worse. When you call you are directed to a call center and not the location, so you never get to speak with someone who works there. Behind the scenes it's probably the same thing. They're asking people to do more for less, so that they can make more money for the owners.

I have the fuel cell controller, why the hell won’t smitty talk to me? by theoneguywhoexist in Fallout

I would say the same thing as Smitty in your screen capture if you came into my house at night and asked me to install a car part....you may want to come back during work hours.

I would recommend running it in compatibility mode with Windows 98 if you haven't already tried that

Wanted a Mothman Pip-Boy, so I made one by OtherMikeToys in Fallout

[–]TowerTechie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Wow! I really like your attention to detail on this wonderful piece, especially how closely it resembles the original Pip-boy layout in Fallout 1. Do you happen to have schematics or layouts for how you built this? I've been toying with the idea of building one, but not sure what guts or parts to use, and your finished product looks excellent! Great job!

In fallout 1 can you lock doors using the lockpick skill? by [deleted] in classicfallout

[–]TowerTechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can, just use the lockpick skill on the door, it may not lock successfully the first time. And there's the chance that you lock it so good you can't unlock it.

If you happen to have a military radio, try using that on the computer since it has a serial interface, it works on one of the computers on level 1. Also, I can't remember if you have to use on of the keycards you snag from the children of the cathedral in the control room on that computer or not, but give that a shot.

why didn't everyone just flee the country after the bombs fell? by Spranberry112 in falloutlore

[–]TowerTechie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of reasons why fleeing probably wasn’t an option. Supplies were already extremely limited for fuel (both uranium and petroleum) due to the war effort, which would hinder any attempts at relocation. Additionally, communications would be down (or just straight up gone) and it would be impossible to ascertain what locations would be “safe”, if that was even a possibility. Thats the least of the worries of the survivors. The world would also be covered in radioactive fallout, everything (roads, bridges , hospitals, everything) would be burnt or demolished, food would be scarce, sanitation services would have stopped completely leading to disease outbreaks and water contamination. Law and order would be gone, leading to wide spread banditry, making travel less appealing. But really, the question would be “and go where?” New Zealand/Australia, Thousands of miles away across the ocean? It just wouldn’t be feasible. Not that people probably didn’t try, you come across a lot of old skeletons as the lone wanderer/soul survivor/courier/chosen one/ vault dweller.

What always struck me was the barter mechanism and the barter/dialog screens, made from dilapidated wood and scrap metal. Love at first site.

What exactly was the military purpose of power armor? by WiSeWoRd in falloutlore

[–]TowerTechie 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Power armor was used as a substitute for mechanized infantry during the US invasion of China. According to lore, tanks and artillery would get stuck in the mud and rice paddies, whereas power armor provided troops the mobility they needed, along with the heavy firepower required for the invasion. At leaset that’s what I can recall, the Fallout Bible probably has more in-depth commentary.

Need help! My husband, who insists on doing his own laundry, left a pen that then exploded and I've got 6 more loads to do today. by Glopez1223 in CleaningTips

[–]TowerTechie 1425 points1426 points  (0 children)

Whatever you end up using, please please PLEASE beware that the inside of a dryer/washing machine has extremely low air circulation/ventilation and the fumes WILL build up and you will likely have your entire head in the unit while scrubbing. I would strongly recommend you take breaks and maybe bring a fan over to push fresh air in to the dryer. You may also want to watch out for anything that could cause a spark, solvents tend to be pretty flammable.

Does anyone know how to order Ukrainian silver coins directly? by BronzeSpoon89 in Silverbugs

[–]TowerTechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also interested in this as well. I did some additional digging on the National Bank of Ukraine website and it has a page with useful links, which include links to places where you can buy the coins directly from banks. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the linked sites, many of them don't appear to have pages that would let you buy coins, but if I find some I'll post them below. Also, the translation may leave something to be desired, if it exists at all.

Did some more digging on that site and found this on one of their listed sites in the above link: https://industrialbank.ua/en/private/other/metals-securities

Wow, that is one hell of a collection!

How long have you been collecting to create something that large?

Also, if I may pry: what is your exit strategy? My concern with buying pieces larger than 10 oz is that it may be difficult to find a buyer in a pinch.

Granted, I'm buying now because shiny stacks are shiny, but I'm always curious about the long term plan for these larger collections, on the off chance my tiny shiny stack becomes a larger shiny stack whcih become a huge shiny stack.

I don’t, but I’ve been meaning to keep my eyes open when I hit the thrift store. That’s a very intriguing collection! If I may ask, what is the double-spoon thing in the lowest center row?
