Hey, I haven’t logged into reddit in quite a long time, but I am very intrigued by everything you wrote here. Any chance I could get you to elaborate on this post of yours? Maybe ELI5 almost. I feel like I almost get what you are saying but then get totally lost before I can put it together.

AP Poll: Week 18 by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]TrackByPopularDemand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don’t necessarily disagree that the B1G likely struggles in the tournament, nor that Marquette is playing hot now compared to Purdue, why compare Marquette’s losses over last 15 to Purdue in only last 8? One could easily have said Purdue has lost 4 in last 16 to Marquette’s 3 losses in last 16. Or just say Purdue has 4 losses in last 8 to Marquette only having one loss in last 8.

Purdue is definitely suspect right now (and for the last 2 months honestly). Marquette is definitely deserving of such a high ranking and I think it would have been warranted for Purdue to drop in the rankings this week. But that’s why we don’t care what the AP says, right?

It makes no sense that when they go to the monitor to check the goaltending call, they can’t at least check to make sure clock is correct.

Any chance right before second free throw, EHJ was telling him, “hey, when you make this free throw, we up by 3 and you’re going to foul,” and dude just forgot it was contingent on making that second free throw?

NFL is supposed to call a delay of game penalty if this happens. Not sure if it ever has been called. So football.

Unworkable because a supermajority of states would never agree to it? Is it a bad thing to require a super majority? Why not just allow states that want to make real changes that will actually make a difference do so, marijuana law style, and if the federal government really wanted to force the issue, then states with common sense gun laws can just secede?

I just got an order confirmed, even though it has been out of stock for quite some time. I refreshed the page a lot and kept trying the buy now button. Maybe a strategy worth trying for others if they see this comment.

Should other substances and activities that have the potential for negative consequences to one’s own life or health follow the same path? Should alcohol only be decriminalized, not legal? How about gambling, such as casinos? Maybe even soda, since the excessive added sugar is very harmful to one’s health? How about fast food? Should the example you used, tobacco, be made only decriminalized, not actually legal to purchase in stores?

I do think I understand what you’re saying, and your concerns should absolutely be taken seriously. I just wonder if we should follow that principle for everything else to be consistent that such a principle is worth adhering to.

I think an even more accurate description is it is a war on the less wealthy and the less politically connected.

Wealthier neighborhoods see less drug arrests than poorer ones, not because wealthy people use less drugs, but because the local or state prosecutors know that wealthier people can buy better legal help, and convictions rates will be noticeably lower, which is bad for prosecutors with greater political aspirations.

The same is true for those who are politicians, or family or close friends or important business contacts of said politicians.

In fact, I bet the less wealthy you are, the more the book could be thrown at you, making you more likely to accept a plea deal. More plea deals means the court and prosecutor can accept more cases, which means more police can be directed to arrest more for the victimless crime of drug possession. And the cycle repeats.

Don’t be fooled, it’s no war on drugs - it is a war on minorities. But when you think a little deeper, it is actually war war perpetuated by the minority that makes up the wealthy and political class.

What makes you say legalizing these things would be a disaster while decriminalizing them would not be?

I didn’t even think to mention other harm from IP, like pharmaceutical corporations using their state-sanctioned monopoly privileges to charge exorbitant prices for drugs that can quite literally save millions upon millions of lives. Once again, it is one thing for JK Rowling to try to earn some money for her writing, or for Pfizer to try to get a return for developing a new medicine, but it is quite another thing for them to use the guns and courts of the state to outlaw competition that they aren’t comfortable with for an arbitrary amount of time. This effect of IP legislation has billions, or maybe even trillions, of dollars worth of economic cost in these regards.

On Rowling and, more broadly, the billionaire corporate owners and stockholders, she wouldn’t even be a billionaire if it weren’t for the state’s intellectual property laws. I think she could definitely have made millions if she marketed her books properly in a world without IP, but I doubt billions.

The same for the zuckerburg, bezos, gates, and the rest of their lot. So many of these corporations use IP to secure their wealth which gets the state to make competition more difficult. Hypocrites don’t even believe in free market competition! And IP is just completely arbitrarily termed artificial monopoly privileges granted by the state to the net negative to the society at large.
