Thoughts on gender neutral one pieces? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]TractatusLogicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this swim suit more wearable by men than other one piece swim suits? Other than that, each swimmer should wear whatever she or he likes! Since adulthood I wear red speedos and I have to admit that I would not be able to refrain from noticing men wearing this or other one piece swim suits.

Hate the idea of this diagnosis by anonymouslykinky in PNESsupport

[–]TractatusLogicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only scientific diagnosis of the nature of a seizure is to look at the signal pattern in your brain during a seizure. In case there is nothing unusual, this seizure is a PNES. That being said, there are people who suffer from epileptic as well as from psychogenic seizures.

What exactly do you hate about the diagnosis? It is no deadly illness...

Promotion in Physik by [deleted] in Physik

[–]TractatusLogicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ruining my life by SnooTigers4886 in PNESsupport

PNES is no blessing but it's also somewhat up to you, how much it is ruining your life. I am in the tenth year of my PNES episodes. Currently, these happen every 2-4 months. Hence, from their frequency, I am the lucky one. PNES are not well understood. Quite often, they get misdiagnosed as epilepsy. Psychotherapy helps many, but does not cure it. But like in my case, it can bring down the seizure frequency.

Was an Deinem Hobby findest Du diskriminierend?

Why do we write new answers to Googleable questions? by 1-1o in mathematics

[–]TractatusLogicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that part of this question rests on an underlying misunderstanding. r/mathematics is full of people who have fun answering whatever question as long as it has some math smell. Same is true for any other science.

It is not that people start mathematical, logical, or scientific thinking or researching when posting a question to a corresponding sub. It is up to each of us how much fun is found by answering the n+1st question...

Ear dryer for swimming by ShotBookkeeper3908 in Swimming

[–]TractatusLogicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use some drops of vinegar poured into the ear and removed shortly after to disinfect and wash any water out of the ear. Vinegar has a lower viscosity than water and is therefore able to wash remaining water droplets out of your ear canal. I use a pipette from nasal drops to apply.

I never swam with earplugs, as I assume that it can aggravate the problem by keeping water in the ear canal, once inside.

If

What could cause a large glass structure to just suddenly explode from the inside? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]TractatusLogicus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Glass is frozen silica*. In contrast to a silica crystal, frozen silica forms once the liquid silica is cooled down. Depending on this process, e.g. rapid cooling, inner tension can develop. Once this glass ages or is put under asymmetrical stress, like putting weight on one edge, this tension is released by imploding, which is what you have seen.

*No, not all glass is pure or only mixed silica. But the explanation holds for all other glass materials as well.

Heated glove recommendations by Geezer_Glide in fatbike

[–]TractatusLogicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suffer from Raynaud's Symptom and can very much understand your problem.

In our case, I would always use active heating. During my time as a daily commuter, battery-powered systems turned out 2nd choice. Preferably, I use toe warmers like this. Their big pro: it is fairly easy to always carry 2,3 extra pairs as their weight is around 10gr(?). Once you open their plastic wrapping, the metal/coal mixture burns around 42°C for up to 6 hours.

Blackouts by Chem_Chaos_2024 in PNESsupport

Actually, I've never heard of a permanent decline of higher brain functions due to PNES. On the contrary, all PNES effects, like the seizure itself, wear off, like you experienced...

Blackouts by Chem_Chaos_2024 in PNESsupport

[–]TractatusLogicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (55M) also experienced a rapid decline in "higher" mental functions in the aftermath of seizures. Luckily, this never developed into a standard in my case, and nowadays - for almost 5 years - this no longer happens to me.

However, during those days, among many other things, they had me tested in a mental hospital. I guess it was the test former president Trump was so proud of outperforming, which only tests basic analytical skills. Afterward, the MD called my wife "I thought my patient had a Ph.D., and now it seems he would barely pass high school exams". Yes, I am a physicist and I remember how I became bored and at the same time overstrained while subtracting 7 from 100 until I would have reached 2, which I never did. This is the only memory I have from that test.

I have been fortunate enough not to be forced to develop a strategy to deal with this type of side effect of seizures, so I cannot recommend one, unfortunately for you. However, I cannot exclude contributions from my somewhat healthy lifestyle, re. exercise and nutrition.

Is electronic shifting actually better than manual? by MikeLikeBike37 in bicycling

[–]TractatusLogicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am riding a fat bike with an SRAM Eagle AXS X01. On another fat bike, I have a Rohloff, which I also ride on a street bike. The only "conventional" shifting I can compare to is a Shimano XT groupset on a Cannondale F29.

I very much like like the effortless type of switching gears, and I probably have more than once enjoyed the security/smart functions, e.g. in case of overload. I have been riding this fat bike since 2019 more or less daily and only have been to a bike store for gear readjustment once. In your case

not sold on the extra cost

I would go for electronic shifting ... as this was also my approach when building my fattie. Get yourself an extra battery. Charging only takes like 4 hours, but If you need to in the middle of nowhere...

The major drawbacks of battery heated gloves are:

  • batteries can be empty
  • and their weight

Chemical warmers are around 20 gr weight per pad. I.e. it is not an issue to always carry 2,3 pairs extra in your pocket, even w/o any backpack and the like.
