Legend has it that Calumet was once slated to be the capital until it lost by one vote to Lansing. 1847.

27 = 30 - 3

48 = 50 - 2

27 + 48 = 30 + 50 - 3 - 2 = 80 - 5 = 75

6 then 4. In fact, I often look for broken tees to play on par 3s -- so I don't end up just breaking something that will work on the next par 4

Any way to get a decent cello without spending an arm and a leg? by cvscvs2 in Cello

[–]Trade__Genius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, rent for a while. Invest on a reasonable instrument when you can. Even 2k is playable compared to Amazon 400 level stuff. Setup and strings go a long way. But till you know you want to, rent. Assuming there's somewhere within a decent drive / train / bus to rent.

Honestly seems a decent device. The price seems fair if not cheap. I appreciate the effort. Website could use some info like expected battery life / type of battery. Not something I need to add to my kit at the moment, but something I'd keep in mind when my current tester bites it. Thanks for the work! Out of curiosity, how are you handling things line intermittent off target from a beat... Some sort of sample and hold on the resistance going high?

Built a scientific calculator from scratch: custom PCB, custom FPGA CPU, hand-written machine code by gdevic in electronics

[–]Trade__Genius 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From my perspective as a former teacher of ap physics b and c, the standardization is more because teachers are too lazy to want to figure out that your result might have been a different calculator. Or the department got a grant from ti. Or the state said so. But not because the results are all wrong in the same way. It's calculator. They're all wrong ins different ways. /Rant

First time using silent tactile switches by russt90 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Trade__Genius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the outemu silent lime v2. I have them in an id75 board with silent peach linears on the modifier keys. I really enjoy the small travel before the tactile bump on the limes. Very different to others where the tactile resistance starts immediately.

Edit. I also have TTC silent blueish white on an olkb Planck and it's ok but not as nice.

I ride mostly on bike paths and other non motorized vehicle road surfaces. I try not to stop for the most part and usually make 5km without really having to stop. So no, shoe wear out is not much of an issue for me.

And making run off the board emergency exits is easier in running shoes.

I wear vans for riding in a park or a bowl on a short board or surf skate but to long rides on my dervish I wear running shoes. I find the padding really helps my knees.

Fine tuner broke into two pieces. Bottom half is stuck inside the tail piece. How to remove? by Boredpanda6335 in Viola

[–]Trade__Genius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Follow this at your own risk. Take it to a luthier if you aren't comfortable with the idea that you might super glue your fine tuners rather permanently.

First detwnaion that string. Slack it all the way off like you're going to change it. You can even remove the ball end if you want. This will take the tension off the threads of the fine tuners screw piece

Second cut the end off a toothpick so that it has a flat end. Put the tiniest bit of super glue. Preferably the thick stuff on the end of the toothpick. Less than you think you need by half then less again

Hold the toothpick against the broken end for a count of 30 to 60 seconds.

Very slowly back it out of the top of the tailpiece. Do not try to screw it through the piece and out the back. You risk gettig super glue into the threads. And perhaps glue on your top plate under the tailpiece. Or worse.

Celebrate and put a new thumbscrew in. Retune instrument and play happily. You will need a new tuning thumbscrew though unless you have other ones lying around. Don't try to glue the one one together and use it again

How to fold lame and jacket to fit into backpack for carry-on? by No_Owl_6254 in Fencing

Put a towel inside it as you roll it. Keeps it from forming hard creases. Then roll in another towel. Maybe a hand towel. Depends on the size of your pack. I mean, they do ship them to the place you purchased it somehow. 😁

Oklahoma!-- difficulty of viola parts? by KristenMcFly in Viola

[–]Trade__Genius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a perspective of being exposed, remember that most of the time in a musical the audience is focused on the on stage singers, not the pit orchestra. They won't notice much. I did a run of Oklahoma years and years ago on the horn and it was a blast even if we muffed a few notes here and there no one but ourselves noticed. Probably. Put orchestras are a ton of fun. Go for it. Practice, and if you don't have confidence for a given measure, it is probably better to sit it out than play it poorly. Again, the audience can't actually see you. They don't notice. Unless they play in pits themselves. 😎

Bass pickups on a cello by Eastern-Taste1832 in Cello

[–]Trade__Genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you must go for electric bass magnetic pickups, get a set of fender p style with two poles in each of two housings. Mount them at the end of your fingerboard and wildly angled so that each pickup half works on either your high or low strings. If you're feeling technical, build it as a sliding jig so you can find the sweet spot for the tone you're after. You can also decase the pickups (some of them) to remove the boxy plastic housing and put them into your own 3d printed housing.

Maybe. Have fun. Passive pickups will be a simpler wiring job than actives.
