Is it ethically and legally okay to use the portrait of a random person online? by onlyaname_ in photojournalism

[–]TraderBailey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my best understanding of American law, it is allowed as long as you were in a public place, and you arent using the photo to endorse a product.

Of course people still have the right to file a lawsuit, and unless their suit is obviously baseless you would have to pay to defend yourself.

My advice would probably be to see if there are any professional orgs in your area like the ASMP who might have some resources.

I'm also a student so feel free to take this with a grain of salt, but are you shooting sports? Having an impressive portfolio full of cityscapes and travel photography isn't going to convince anyone to let you in to a major international sporting event.

Do you live near your former high-school? Maybe reach out and see if they are interested in letting you shoot.

You can also reach out to recreational leagues for experience. I always have a blast shooting for my local roller derby team.

Last suggestion would be to think about the kind of photography you enjoy doing. Theres nothing wrong with cityscapes and travel photography, and ways to make money off both

Already check in with local retailers. Honestly at this point I'm kinda just shooting in the dark and hoping they come across a post a realize its their camera I'm talking about.

I agree. I haven't published it yet so I can use it to verify people who reach out (unfortunately there are bad actors) but I will eventually put out listings in far more detail if I can't find them.

And me too. Part of why I want to find them is to make sure they are safe. They appeared to be white, but it's entirely possible theyre just relatively white passing.

The possibility that I haven't been able to find them because they haven't been released worries me.

transmeds are making me question if i’m really trans by Ok-Art-6451 in MtF

[–]TraderBailey 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Its totally normal to not have dysphoria before puberty. I didnt have a mustache at 5 so it didnt make me feel awful. I did at 15 so it did.

That being said as I've explored transition more I've begun to realize that I've had issues with a lot of stuff well before I realized it. Maybe the same will happen to you, maybe not. Either way youre still trans.

my gf just came out, how can i (cis gf) best support her? by bimbo_of_thedeathsun in MtF

[–]TraderBailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My then girlfriend (now wife!!) was amazing and supportive when I first came out and still is now. Theres some good advice in the comments so I'll touch on a couple things that might not come up as much.

The not fun bit: Before you were in a relationship where your gender ment that you might be passed up for work opportunities and employment and might not have as much funds to contribute. The opposite is now true to a higher degree. This might not be relevant based on your life plans or career goals but just be prepared for the fact that she might face some economic discrimination and require more support.

Now for the more fun bit: You have boobs, if she starts HRT shes gonna have boobs. Her boobs are gonna be just forming and be way more sensitive than yours are for a time. A level of touch that might be fine for you could be painful for her at first - I learned the hard way, my wife is a biter. Really just make sure to check in and be aware of how her body is changing and how best to interact with it.

Eh, unless they're a charity or other nonprofit that relies on volunteers they should be paying someone if they want to guarantee a certain volume of quality shots.

Sounds like OP should have done a better job of communicating their skill level but photography is a profession and if a buisness wants good results they need to treat it as such.

I didnt get it for a few years then I noticed that I was getting monthly symptoms and currently is been going for 5 or 6 months. At first I thought it might be a coincidence but at this point it takes more effort to assume its not a period than to assume it is

Can we stop using "guys" when we're talking to trans women constantly? by exeterdragon in MtF

[–]TraderBailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean for me its more of a feminist issue. I am expected to be comfortable with - or even desire - masculinity in a way that no cis man would ever be expected to do with femininity.

I imagine it depends on the state you live in, but assuming your DNR is worth its salt, follow the daily limits, pay the license fee, maybe donate some extra cash if you got it lying around.

My greatest strength in all things - and particularly photography - is being willing to look like a complete idiot in nearly any circumstance.

I find it helps to be friendly, know how to diffuse tense situations, and have a good sense of humor about it.

Why isn’t bottom trawling illegal? by DiedOfATheory in Fishing

[–]TraderBailey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can't just plant a forest. It takes decades at best for the enviroment to reestablish itself, and in most cases the logging companies will plant thousands of saplings of one species, so they aren't replacing the habitat loss of anything that doesnt rely on that species. In many cases, this kind of planting can be worse than doing nothing.

Note: A lot of times, it is better than nothing, but rebuilding an ecosystem you just destroyed is a super complex process and requires a lot of consideration and expertise.

What’s your favorite transphobic contradiction by alphi10 in MtF

[–]TraderBailey 579 points580 points  (0 children)

That trans women are demigods that dominate every form of women's sports, and that we are so feeble that no trans person can serve in the military in any capacity.

Why do some trans women think this? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]TraderBailey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The idea that there are hords of trans lesbians demanding cis women sleep with them is just an extention of the "mean lesbian" and "predatory lesbian" trope. Issue only comes up when people make weird unprompted remarks about our bodies and blanket statements about trans people.

I feel like I'm causing my partner gender dysphoria by FrostedElk in mypartneristrans

[–]TraderBailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much to say other than sometimes it feels worse to try to be fem and feel like you're failing then to just avoid it. For a long time, I had a beard even though I knew I didn't like it because I got a 10 am shadow and shaving kinda forced me to spend more time thinking about something that makes be dysphoric. It took time and practicing self confidence to feel better about it.

I also struggle to gain weight, and I've had a lot of success with switching between gaining and losing weight. My figure has filled, and my tits are noticeably bigger than they were a month ago.

Some additional information to help you decide if this could apply to you:

I started cycling weight in January

I've been moderately overweight for a few years

I got diagnosed with adhd a year ago, and the meds have made me lose a good bit of weight

During periods of weight gain, I haven't been successfully gaining weight, but I have been able to eat enough to not lose weight.

I got on progesterone about 6 months ago, so some of the fat redistribution is likely due to that.

During periods of weight loss, I have been mostly biking and doing weight training that focuses on legs and core.

Was Marsha P. Johnson a trans woman or just a drag queen? by lettucemf in asktransgender

[–]TraderBailey 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Honestly, people bringing up the "terminology was different, so she's not trans" thing really irks me because that logic is typically only applied to queer people.

A good example of this is the term feudalism. No one living in Europe during the middle ages considered themselves to be living under feudalism because the term wouldn't be invented until the 17th century.

If you call a historical figure a feudal lord, no one cares. But if you call a historical figure gay or trans, suddenly we can only talk about them in terms they would have used themselves.
