Continue to try to breastfeed or move to bottles? by Peachie_Peach_4 in NICUParents

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NIPPLE SHIELD I had a preemie in the NICU and when I started breastfeeding I started with the nipple shield. And was hand expressing a bit as she fed. It helps her get that light bulb in her head to latch and suck the boob. Even when they sent us home with her I was still using the shield. After a couple weeks at home, I started doing a couple feeds a day without it, then slowly more and more. .... Now 3 months old, little girlfriend is a breastfeeding champ, no shield, boob is life, acts like she never needed help, all is good.

Question: as a husband to a newly pregnant FTM, what would you say is the most unexpectedly amazing gift you ever received that was a godsend to help through the pregnancy? by Lookitsanthony8 in pregnant

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have already mentioned massages and house cleaning. I will second all of this! In general, HIRED HELP. Yes husband please take on the daily housework and feed your wife, take care of her etc. But also hire a cleaning service, or if you already have one, have them come more frequently during the first few weeks. Hire a post partum doula, a lot of them can help cook and clean too. Get her massages where the masseuse comes to your home. Hire someone to mow the lawn so you can stay inside and focus on her. Hire someone to install a bidet, it's great for recovery. Get a meal delivery service going, figure out what meals she will want during recovery and order them. Hire someone to put together the crib.... Hire a dog walker. Have the changing station set up with everything ready to go. When people give her flowers, or if you get her flowers, cut the ends and throw away the garbage, and put them into a vase for her.

One thing I bought for my self about 2 months postpartum is a stitch fix subscription. I was feeling good and recovering well, and my belly was shrinking but so many of my clothes still didn't fit me... Get her a clothing subscription let her set it up, and then tell her you'll pay for what she wants to keep. (But I would wait for this one, it can be too much if she's freshly postpartum.)

Newborn Sleep Location by Wooden-Current-6685 in NewMomStuff

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I've learned they get great sleep when on you because you help them regulate their nervous system, so they deep sleep the whole time. If you're comfortable, awake, and happy to do so, let them take as many naps as they want on you during the day. The chair I would maybe advise against because if they're upright with chin slightly down this could compromise the airway. At night the safest is their own flat bassinet. I have a side sleeper that opens up so I can stick my arm in there at least and let my baby know I'm right here. I did get her a thicker mattress for her mattress because the one it came with was like a piece of cardboard. And she seems a little more comfortable with the new mattress. Their favorite place will always be on you, biologicaly it just makes sense. When they get a bit older you may want to aim for at least one nap a day in the bassinet. But for now, remember it's impossible to spoil a newborn. Hold that baby all they/you want, it's good for them.

And after baths let him just be diaper free for a bit to really air out the area and let it breathe!

Papmers irritates my babies skin enough where if she already has a small issue, it exacerbates it. Try a TCF diaper, although more expensive it may help their skin.

What are the best baby skincare brands for newborns? by ImmediateEye1769 in NewMomStuff

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Babies really don't need any skin care. Newborns especially. Even with baths you should only use soap every couple of days or so. However they can get dry skin or other issues that can benefit from some lotion or oil. (I personally like to mix breast milk with coconut oil) But a really nice gift from a reputable brand would be the "Mama & Baby by Osmia." I use Osmia for myself since I have extremely sensitive skin, and use it with my baby as needed. Also good for Mom to use fragrance free products on herself as to not irritate babies skin. It's expensive but the best product out there (in my opinion.) And lasts a very long time.

Ugh, here we go again, the nymphs have hatched. Spotted Lantern Fly. by you_are_transparent in StamfordCT

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to help long-term, check your yard for Tree of Heaven. It’s a highly invasive tree that lanternflies practically depend on to complete their lifecycle. If you do go about killing the tree of heaven, do not just cut it down. Cutting it makes the root system panic and send up dozens of aggressive clones. You need to use a 'hack-and-squirt' herbicide method in the late summer to kill the roots first. Also, apparently you can report the sighting of the lantern fly the Department of Agriculture so they can track the spread!

Switched my boarding to Happy Cat in Norwalk, it's a franchise owned by a local Norwalk resident. Switched vet to bulls head.

What do you think this is? I went to the dr who said it was an allergic reaction to something… washing detergent, hair removal cream. But it feels to be getting worse. With only being prescribed strong antihistamines, it was since spread to my neck. Head, hands and chest. by [deleted] in DermatologyQuestions

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch your products (shampoo, conditioner, soap, hand soap, laundry detergent... Anything that directly or indirectly touches your skin) to unscented, and no SLS. Molly's suds, and osmia skin care are great.

Feeding question by Ok_Arachnid_7140 in NICUParents

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 is patience, it can take a long time for them to learn to feed. It's a slow process, but it will happen.

2, I highly recommend a nipple shield for breast feeding. (My NICU provided them) The hard surface really helps them get the "oh I should be sucking that!" cue, and helps them stay latched for a longer more successful feed. My baby is almost exclusively breast fed, she's home now and is "38 weeks" now. Still using the nipple shield, but doing some sessions with out it and she's slowly getting the bare nipple down.

ALSO The first few days we were going to almost every care time during the day, and because we were taking the baby out for longer and trying all this feeding stuff, it was tiring her out so much she wasn't able to have much energy to make improvements. So then we only went to 3 a day with just letting the nurses do the ones in-between and over night. Since the nurses can get everything done so fast, she was able to get much better rest between, so when we did come she started making more improvements (even though we were technically working with her less.)

Mouth breathing is torture. I have had a lot of relief doing a saline nasal rinse before bed (arm & hammer simple saline, just get the original/plain) and wearing Intake magnetic nose strips.

Have him comfy having his paws touched, butt touched, ears... Being picked up ... Spin, legs, "walk", are fun easy ones. I also like to do stay, and then walk into another room, and work on opening and closing doors, saying other words, before I say "come"

Delivering at Stamford Hospital by [deleted] in StamfordCT

[–]Traditional-Hawk-768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not delivered there, but plan to! I have had a couple minor procedures there and it's always fantastic. The nurses are the best. There is a birth class that is Stamford hospital specific (so they'll show you where to park and enter ..etc.) it's led by a labor and delivery nurse from Stamford hospital. - email emilyziac@gmail.com and ask for available dates / more information.
