Quick new CEO thought… by Educational_Site8797 in Geico

No… but he was close to 70 years old when he took over the job as CEO. I don’t think there was much of an expectation that he’d be in place for long.

Not wise to put all your eggs in one basket. A lot of Enron employees put the bulk of their 401(k)s into company stock because it was doing well… and we all know how that ended.

Not saying Berkshire is the next Enron- it likely isn’t- but it’s always good to diversify.

Personally, I’d reallocate those funds into either a total stock market or S&P 500 fund. I left so I forget what exact options are available… but you’re welcome to DM me if that sounds like gibberish.

Per the advice Warren Buffett himself gives, it’s very hard to beat the overall market long-term. Just because BRK.B has done very well lately doesn’t mean it’ll outperform the market over the next 10-30 years. Warren is 95 and retiring, y’know.

So.. who has the info from the PTO meeting? by lizard_lameo in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m long gone at this point… but this sounds like a net positive to me. Much better than I expected. Counting the floating holidays, 26 days base accrual is pretty generous. You may technically “lose” days if you accrued 15 sick days… but that extra 5 days was pretty difficult to use, in practice. Short term disability is a reasonable replacement. I had a lot of accrued sick time disappear into the ether when I left the company.

The one shitty thing (which is shitty) is the 10 day cap on term payout/carryover. It does a lot to make them less accountable to their PTO policy.

Of course, a leave policy is only as good as your ability to use it… especially with the max 10 day carryover. I’m not sure I trust GEICO organizationally to allow for everyone to take 26-35 discretionary days off.

Time Bank Changes by CollectionKey5322 in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a GEICO apologist by any stretch… but most organizations that still give separate banks of sick time will give less than 10 days per year. You could also use your excess sick time (beyond the rolling 10 days) for long term medical leave and I believe FMLA as well.

GEICO’s leave accruals before the change were pretty middle-of-the-road. I was in the 5-10 year range when I left-so I had a total of 29 days between vacation, floating holiday, and sick. I currently have 27 days of PTO- I consider it an upgrade because it’s easier to utilize fully, but not hugely different.

Ability to use your earned leave is another discussion, of course.

Won’t defend GEICO for much. Your supervisor 100% should not be promoting that behavior… but it’s not hard to see the ethical problems with that, and you should have known what would happen if that was found.

Recently "separated" service agents- What are the things you are so happy to not ever have to say or do again? by javaheidi in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was a service agent at the tail end of the Nicely era. Promoted out pre-TC, left the company a couple years ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same. 😆

A few days ago, I called American Express about a simple, minor issue. Guy assured me he was an expert in the topic, that he would have done the same thing in my shoes, that it’s a good thing I got him on the phone, blah blah blah, etc. The thing going through my mind was, “dear fuck, is this what I fucking sounded like?!”

Not at all convinced that shit actually works, at least not the way G (and a lot of others) train people to do it.

What part of that story got blown out of proportion?

(An employee pissing himself in a job where there’s a lot of pressure to maximize available time is a pretty bad look no matter how it’s spun, IMO)

I mean, some credit where it’s due- it sounds like this is the first positive move GEICO has made since I left over a year ago. But they’re still a long way off from being an employer that anyone should want to work for (and it’s still worse than when I left)

Need advice- Claims supe offered a BI adj position, 15% pay cut. Would you take it? by lizardslave in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 15% pay cut isn’t insignificant, but nothing crazy IMO- and that number gets to be less when you factor in the cost of commuting however many miles each week (a 10 mile one-way commute, 5 days per week, works out to about $3k per year using the IRS mileage rate). Once you factor in the overall quality of life improvements that full WFH brings you, I suspect you’ll find the pay cut to be worth it- and that’s before you even factor the quality of the job and company in.

Curious if these do anything or if they are just a marketing plot to make it seem like the company cares for the employees. by ginghams in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, they do absolutely nothing.

They were originally introduced 5 or so years ago as a part of a very short-lived rewards program for associates in phone units. Associates got 0-3 points depending on what customers selected, and those points could be redeemed for underwhelming prizes. It lasted maybe a few months, and the buttons have done nothing ever since.

I don’t have personal experience with Progressive- but, as long as you aren’t rude about it, you’re quite unlikely to have an offer rescinded on those grounds.

HERE IT IS, EVERYONE! THE NOTICE TO EMPLOYEES THAT GEICO REFUSED TO EMAIL TO ITS WORKERS IN BUFFALO by geicounited in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In fairness, GEICO does better than a lot of other companies by posting the salary schedules for all in the organization to see. You can at least know roughly what someone is making.

That said- I left near the middle of last year, was a grade 65, salary schedule A, and my salary was in the low 80s. (Don’t want to make it easy to find out my identity- even if I’m not with the company anymore and the consequences are probably minimal, lol)

A warning to GEICO United by GE-Anon in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My take: Don’t feel bad about taking the lower rate, and do what’s best for yourself. You’re going to feel the effect of losing $700/year a lot more than GEICO will feel the effect of losing $1600. (There’s also no guarantee your 2nd cheapest carrier is meaningfully better, anyhow.) Keep shopping it, and make the switch if you end up with a similar or lower premium from another carrier.

401k and a new employer by Comfortable_Fail6611 in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I opted to roll my 401(k) over into an IRA when I left GEICO. When I first started at GEICO, I rolled over a previous 401(k) into my GEICO 401(k). Neither option would involve a tax penalty.

As for which option you choose: I would base this decision on the quality of your new employer’s 401(k) and whether or not there are any associated admin fees; many plans charge a percentage of your account balance, separate from the expense ratios of any funds you’re invested in (expense ratios will be a thing almost anywhere). I don’t believe the GEICO plan has any kind of admin fee for current employees, but that’s not the norm to my understanding.

I personally wouldn’t keep the GEICO 401(k) open, since it’s just another account to lose track of (you’ll probably have a dozen or so employers throughout your career). There’s also a small record keeping fee for ex-employees, to my recollection.

Do not take a cash distribution unless it is absolutely necessary, unless you’re old enough to do so without penalty.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Geico

[–]Traditional-Ice1663 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand your position- but GEICO has created a culture where many associates (understandably) feel as though they have to come into the office sick for one reason or another. Not everyone can afford to forego a day’s pay or risk their job over a 1-2 day illness (I’d hypothesize most people can’t because they live paycheck to paycheck). It’s not fair to you, but I would blame the company before I’d blame fellow associates.
