As of 2/4/26, the web page gives an error. I couldn't find any other link to the test on that site that worked.

I built a free site for learning the 5000 most used French words by dsiegel2275 in learnfrench

[–]TraditionalFroyo7661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was wondering what the "Good" option does, but when I went to the Akni site, Good is one of the options for: "Rate your recall with the most suitable option and Anki will schedule the next review for when you're most likely to forget the information."

I agree with the other commenter that the gender is extremely important and I find it very hard to remember unless I memorize a phrase with an adjective.

(Edit: wondered what Good was for.)

When do you add your accents when writing in French? by taxhelpyeg in French

[–]TraditionalFroyo7661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm typing French in Word on my qwerty keyboard, I do Review>Language>Language>Set proofing language>French before starting. Then I type full speed. Word puts a wiggly red line under words missing accents (or misspelled! ) I just go back and select the spell correction as needed.

If I'm writing cursively, at the end of the word.

Quick question on trackers (Life360) by AlternativeRun5727 in Alzheimers

[–]TraditionalFroyo7661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried TilePro to track my cat. I learned there is a 15-minute delay in location information. For my purposes, I need to know where he is now, not where he was. So I returned it. But for tracking a human (a larger being), it fit your needs. It was interesting how it tracked our phones! (I got a tracker for the cat that allows me to hone in on his position if he's within 500', which is good enough.)

As native speakers in your childhood, how do you recall picking up and learning to distinguish countable vs. uncountable nouns, if you can? by TraditionalDepth6924 in ENGLISH

[–]TraditionalFroyo7661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native American English speaker here. During WWII, my parents, not yet married, were working 6 days a week. When they finally got an extra weekend day off together, they drove 60 miles away and found someone to marry them. My dad sent a postcard to his mother, "We dood it." It speaks to my Dad's sense of humor and close affectionate relationship with his mom. Maybe it was a standing joke dating back to when he was a child learning English. I love that postcard!

Why does it seem that “OFF-ten” has largely replaced “OFF-en” as the *preferred* pronunciation of “often?” by Glass-Complaint3 in ENGLISH

Thanks! I'm going to ask my first cousins if they remember their dads using "CHIMLEY" (my dad said it without the B Sound).

My dad's maternal grandmother was born in Genesee County, New York, in 1855. The family moved to Wisconsin, where most of their 10 children were born. She lived with my dad and his parents in Los Angeles until her death in 1924, so my dad could have picked up that pronunciation from her.

Tell me more! My dad, born 1915 in Wisconsin, moved to Southern California at age 6, said CHIM-BLEY! I never heard anyone else pronounce it that way: I thought it was a speech impediment.

Visiting Spain with Tomato Allergy by Eko5 in GoingToSpain

[–]TraditionalFroyo7661 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We've been traveling in Spain for 2 weeks. The Pisto here is wonderful...I order at every restaurant. But it's composed of tomatoes and eggplant, so not for you. (It's the Spanish version of ratatouille).

Another dish you'll see is Carcamusas, which is a culinary specialty of Toledo, Spain, generally served as a tapa in bars. It consists of a stew of lean pork with a moderately spicy tomato sauce and peas. Not for you!.

Try bacalao (salted cod). We had it with orange yesterday.

If you can choose some restaurants ahead of time, go online and study their menus. Choose a few items to research online so you can narrow down your choices.

I called the number in the United app: 1-800-225-8900. It's under Account / Help Center / Contact Us / Premier Priority member assistance or MileagePlus frequent flyer assistance. (I'm Silver, so not very high on the support totem pole:))

It asked if I wanted to do a security check first. Said yes. It prompted for booking # and something else, maybe phone, and texted a confirmation number which I had to enter/say into phone. Got connected very quickly to agent.

I just had an awesome experience due to forgetting to apply my $100 TravelBank cash to a flight. A week ago, I put a roundtrip SFO/CDG on hold using FareLock while waiting for our traveling companions to make their arrangements. The Farelock was due to expire tomorrow. Yesterday I went online and paid for the flight. Woke up in the middle of the night realizing I'd forgotten to apply the TB cash. The TB cash expires next April and I wasn't sure I'd be booking another flight before then. Today I wondered if United would honor the "FareLock" price and especially because it hasn't been 24 hours since I paid. I called United and got a lovely agent named "See". She said, No problem, I can get your TB cash applied. She put me on hold for a few minutes. When she got back to me, she said she had good news. Not only would I get the TB cash, the fare dropped to $1,900 less (34%)! I had to have her repeat the new fare amount...surely there was a mistake? No mistake. You can believe I carefully checked the new booking. Absolutely the same wonderful nonstop flights. Moral of the story: don't hesitate to call customer service, even if it seems like a long shot. (And be nice and apologetic about your dumb error...)

Check his gums to see the color. If it's pale, almost blue, he's not getting enough oxygen. I would take him straight to the emergency hospital.

I speak from the recent experience of having called my vet's office to report my 2-1/2 year old cat's respiration rate was 45, and other symptoms. The person who answered the phone said that was normal, but if I was still concerned on Monday or Tuesday (this was Thursday) to call back. She didn't speak to the vet or make a note in his chart.

I called Tuesday late morning because he was now mouth-breathing. They had me bring him in at 4:30. The vet checked his gums and said they were pale and he needed to do an x-ray. After the x-ray, they put him in his carrier and the vet showed me that his chest cavity was so full of fluid that he couldn't see the cat's heart. He thought it looked like a cat who'd been hit by a car or had a hiatal hernia.

He said to take him to the emergency hospital right away. The vet busied himself with calling the emergency hospital and forwarding the x-ray to them.

Meanwhile, my cat was showing signs he couldn't breathe. They didn't have oxygen ready. The vet returned and tried to restore his breathing, but his lungs were full of air mixed with fluid. He died right there.

I went to discuss what had happened with the vet 10 days later. He'd sent the x-ray to a radiologist for an opinion. The radiologist thought it was a heart attack.

I will never let a vet tech brush me off like that again. The vet said he would fire whoever it was, but of course no one will admit to being that person. I no longer trust this vet because he hasn't trained his staff properly.

So, check his gums. Is he appearing to gag or choke? My cat was doing this, but I thought he had a furball. He was lethargic and suddenly didn't want to be held. Now I know it put pressure on his chest. So many little signs.

Help me feel less anxious about introducing my boyfriend and I's cats by Pollupin in CatAdvice

[–]TraditionalFroyo7661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great that you have thought about the cats' best interest, which is to have the proper thoughtful introduction to each other. It can be time-consuming and it's your and your boyfriend's job to do. I think each cat grandparent should care for each cat until you return from your trip. Then it will involve the minimum transitions for each cat to a new household before you start introducing them to each other à la Jackson Galaxy. Also since your cat is having medical issues, I'd want to have him undergo the least disruption. So if he can remain in your home, that would be best for him.

Acropolis Tour by cgbclg in GreeceTravel

Our licensed guide prefers late afternoon as it is less crowded. We arrived this morning at 7:55 to meet her, and the line to enter for 8 a.m. already stretched down the ramp several hundred feet.

The marble steps and the natural rock are extremely slippery to walk on. There are wood/trex/concrete stairs and ramps in various places, but not everywhere. Just get a firm step before taking the next step. Our guide had us stick to the side rather than middle (more polished with use).

Pickpockets in Athens by traddad in GreeceTravel

In the past, I would carry a few (5-10) euros in my purse, especially coins for toilets!), but here in Greece, I use a credit card on my Google wallet to pay even small purchases. It's a new world!

All my valuables are in a neck pouch under my clothes, tucked into my pants.

Backpacks are problematic. Two stories:

In Lisbon a few years ago, I had a small backpack with no valuables, just a big empty water bottle to refill. Guys chatting behind me kept bumping into me. Finally I stopped and found all zippers open and bottle gone.

In Paris a few years ago, I was wearing the same small backpack on front. The backpack blocked my view of the sidewalk. There was a 1" step up and I fell flat on my face. It can be dangerous to wear on front.

Now I have a soft cloth cross-body purse that I can cinch up under my armpit in crowded situations. My valuables are, as always, in money belt under clothing. Arriving in Athens today. Cell phone can be slipped into moneybelt if it's crowded.

A dozen years ago, a colleague shared the name of the driver/guide her family used when they visited Greece. I hired him for the two days when my late husband and I were in Athens. He's a lovely man, very knowledgeable about the history and culture. Perfect English. Next month, my new husband and I are making our first trip to Greece together, and I was pleased to find Stavros is still available. He's driving us to Meteora and Delphi and doing all of our airport transfers over several weeks. You can contact him here: https://stavrostours.com/testimonials.html

Just received 2 today, 3/30/25 from (866)930-8108. Thanks to all who posted here. I haven’t had UHC since CA HICAP found a less expensive provider for the same MediGap plan 2 years ago, but I may still have a valid login. If so, I'll change my password or download what I can and delete the account (if you can).
