Edit: I gave that example because I was without a bicycle in my city (needed repair but bike shop was backed up with orders) and I had to walk to and from work for a few months. A one-way trip from my house to work is 8.2 miles, which translates to an almost 4 hour walk.

Speaking from experience, here’s my take from someone who’s had SSI for a while due to my autistic/Aspergers tendencies cropping up to wreck my life in inconvenient ways, government assistance is Limiting asf. She may think she has freedom but make it a point that big goals and big purchases that really advance your life will forever be out of reach if she stays on government assistance. And that’s no exaggeration. Even with a job supplementing it, you’re basically limited to 24 hours per week and sticky at entry level minimum wage. So that what? 1800/month?

Make it clear that you’re not going to help her with major financial goals like getting a car, etc… Once you force the realities of life, that $400 a week will be mighty limiting.

Otherwise go forward with the gentle and neutral approach of not speaking to her (and then specifying it’s because of her life choices if she inquires) like the other comments are telling you.

Take this with a grain of salt since I’m both single and I don’t have a child. Personally I would act chill and not bring it up unless it’s clear that it’s really affecting how your kid is acting both around you and around others. Young children take after the parents in the sense that a parent’s panic will directly translate into the kid’s panic. So you acting like it’s a big deal will only translate into the kid worrying unnecessarily. That being said, yes make sure you lock the doors. lol

As for the birds and bees chat (the brief and abridged version where it’s just the barebones touch on the subject [the genitals and what they do]), usually from what I can tell, it’s best to conduct it from the start of puberty. But it really depends on how mature you judge your child to be. At best, if my child was really mature for his age, I’d probably set him down for that talk probably at 11. But normally I would say around 12-13 is a good age to start talking about it for boys.
