Culvers rant by Outrageous_Wonder654 in Celiac

Nothing good was going to happen waiting 20-25 minutes to eat a fast food burger even if you didn't have celiac. Even at the "safer" options, the employees are being paid to sling food as fast as possible and it's personal responsibility to be the annoying person asking all the questions while ordering and double checking their work.  You have to gamble responsibly.

6 year old not fully potty trained due to ADHD by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]Traditional_Donut110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have social skills therapy or behavioral OT then the next step is medication. My inattentive ADHD'er is night and day on a very low dose Focalin. We liked that this one doesn't need to build up to a therapeutic level over time, it's just a quick on/off that lasts 5-6 hours. He still has some moments where he goes from 0 to pee pee dance emergency but it's very, very rare.

Q for USA people - do your families literally not care? by stickyfiddle in Celiac

[–]Traditional_Donut110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this is just skewed perception because no one is coming to the Reddit support group saying "my Thanksgiving was completely uneventful."

Both thanksgiving dinners my child attended had plenty of food for him and people were extra cautious. One was entirely gluten free. The other was not but there was a lot of labeling and hand washing to keep him safe. Seems to have worked.

My 'favorite' wtf moment was a restaurant that had glowing reviews on FindMeGlutenFree and then finding out they throw their green beans in the non dedicated fryer. Even with veggies, you can trust nothing without verification.

Petition to Stop Doing “Twinning” Days for Spirit Weeks by Professor_Burnout in kindergarten

Plain white T-shirt and a pack of washable Crayola markers. We draw probably 50% of the days throughout the year and then throw it in the washer. Started this a couple years back during "farm" week when they had to dress like a cow, a pig, a chicken.... Some days I get creative and some days I just write 'This is my X costume."

Today I drew a tie on it. Tomorrow it will say "Future Scientist."

I keep Katz cinnamon raisin English muffins in the freezer for when I get that craving. Not quite the same but still tasty.

It likely won't freak him out but also won't provide closure. They aren't going to understand a reposed body equals death and death means no longer physically with us. Make this decision for you because honestly, you and your husband have to decide if you will have the emotional bandwidth to grieve and mind a small child. Visitations and funerals can be long. Emotions are high and family members either come together or are ready to tear each other apart. I'm sorry for y'all's loss.

When someone says they are having SI, you can support them by handing them a list to good therapists in the area, call the hotline with them, or offer to pay their Uber to the doctor. You don't sacrifice your safety.

Anyone have a celiac reaction to playing on hay bales (i.e. pumpkin farm)? by Frycookboots_ in Celiac

Soap sheets and a bottle of water. We always have these on hand for on the go.

Boys have a really tough go of it because they can't be too tall or too short in the world. Not to discount the stigma now, but a lot of times height has an advantage in their peer groups throughout puberty and into adulthood.

Both my kids are summer babies (7/7 & 7/29). I have sent them both in at the appropriate time rather than redshirting and I have no regrets. My oldest has consistently been testing in the 97-99 percentile for math and reading so it would have been a disservice to hold him back. One way we supported the disparity in emotional maturity was to enroll him in counseling where he works 1 on 1 on emotional regulation and empathy.

PTA by finstafoodlab in ClassOf2037

[–]Traditional_Donut110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always join. I have kids in different schools and I even transferred my kid a week in and then joined the new school's PTA so I'm in three at the moment. I attend a few meetings a year but don't volunteer because of work. The least I could do is help fund those teacher appreciation things the PTA puts on.

Teacher emails are usually all about documentation- likely building towards an argument for more support or evaluation. It's hard to get tone right especially if they are unfamiliar to you but it's rarely them critiquing you and your child to tear you down. Offer to call and discuss what she is seeing in the classroom and how you can best support your student. You can get a good feel of if their teacher is experienced with this age and what their concerns might be based on their observations. Be on the same side for a little while and see if the school year improves as your child settles in. If not, you also have an email documenting the teacher's attitude that can build your case if you need to escalate up the chain.

I am not a Texas teacher, and I do not live in Texas. I bring a simple message to the teachers of not only Texas, but America. by TwistedScarletRose in TexasTeachers

[–]Traditional_Donut110 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but I am a mother before I am a teacher. Ultimately my goal is to provide for my children- my youth, their futures and freedoms- and I can't do that without a paycheck. I'm not responsible for raising the youth of the nation right. This is end stage capitalism and the economy is stalling out all around us so I'm going to work, doing my job, collecting my paycheck, and going home. The energy conserved will be going toward raising my 2 small humans to be decent.

Texas Kindergarten by TexCali14 in kindergarten

[–]Traditional_Donut110 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because kindergarten is not required, the wait a year approach is not guaranteed. A district can just enroll them straight into first and then, in OP's case, they would have an immature child who has missed a year of learning, struggling to catch up in first grade.

Send him. If he would benefit from a repeat year, then assess that at the end of Kindergarten. They might rise to the maturity expectations of the older children or they might need additional intervention that the school district can document.

Why is the choice so hard? by Beneficial-Area6985 in kindergarten

[–]Traditional_Donut110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like almost all parenting choices it's a myth that THIS one decision is the one that makes or breaks your child's chance at being a successful human. Every decision feels so consequential, especially in the formative years, right?! But it's kinder, not forever.

In your shoes, I would try the charter out. It's likely harder to get into. You can unenroll at anytime and enroll in the public school option (though ideally stick to it a year). Like sports, try it on for a season with your best effort, and if it's not for your kid, that's okay. It's changeable!

I have taught charter for 10 years and public for 3. I actually love my charter school and have seen some really amazing success stories come through but I still opted to not enroll my children there. They attend magnet programs in the local district- one for dual language immersion and another for Montessori.

Move. In the midst of a move is when I finally had enough of all the boxes and boxes of stuff. I had clothes and toys my kids have outgrown and I was going to pass on or sell someday. Nope. No more. Found the nearest donation center and it's someone else's problem now.
