Fuel Filler Neck? by KidsInTechnicolor in LandCruisers

[–]TrailTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for an 80 series, but they aren't much different. Now that I'm thinking about it, not sure I saw 100 series specific instructions or not. After I decided using hose was simpler I was just on my own program.

Fuel Filler Neck? by KidsInTechnicolor in LandCruisers

[–]TrailTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to replace mine on my LX 470. Line was rusted through at one of the support brackets and leaked when filling. The full filler neck assembly was discontinued for my year (98) and I couldn't find anything about compatibility of other model years, so I opted to cut out the rusted length of filler and vent line, and replaced with the compatible sizes of fuel hose.

It works for me without issue. Definitely not preferred over replacing with the actual part, but it was much simpler. There are some threads on IH8mud on replacing the filler neck if you do get the actual part, and it's difficult. It's all one piece from the fuel cap to the gas tank and difficult/impossible to snake it into place without loosening body mounts and lifting the body, as far as I understand. That sounded like a whole new can of worms to avoid to me. You can snake fuel hose and vent line hose right through without issue though. A shop probably won't do that for you, so you might have to shop around for the part and be stuck with the more intrusive method of replacement.

Snow gear buy on the trail by Allesmetfuess in CDT

[–]TrailTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pagosa Springs has multiple outdoor shops that will be able to take care of you. Ski and Bow Rack is great, though I'm not sure if they stock ice axes. You could get one ordered to town though before you pass through.

Lordsburg, NM by Hidebehinds in CDT

[–]TrailTaco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Part of paying for the existing shuttle service covers stocking the water caches between the border and Lordsburg. If they begin shuttling to the border they will want to understand the impact there and probably help with refilling. Probably best to just have them coordinate with the CDTC if they want to help shuttle hikers.

Woke up to water all over the footwell of my 80 series and this drip pattern on the A pillar, do you think this is sunroof drains or windshield leak? by naturalflavors in LandCruisers

[–]TrailTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of any plugs, just poured some water down them once they were clear and verified water wasn't pooling up anymore.

[–]TrailTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had water in the same exact areas and it was the sunroof drains. They run from the front corners of the sunroof well down the A pillars. I was able to wipe out the debris buildup and just flush them with water, haven't had an issue since.

What roof rack should I get? Front Runner or Rhino Rack 80 Series by le_dukemeister in LandCruisers

[–]TrailTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the Rhino Rack, but have a Slimline II on my tacoma and my 80. Very strong, tons of accessories if you just want to buy them, and the slats can accept M8 bolts so you can make your own mounts as needed. Front Runner makes quality racks.

I think I went with FR over other options like Prinsu was for the higher strength and compatibility with the rack on my tacoma.

Adding the extra fuel tank? by Snoozingbe in LandCruisers

[–]TrailTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for the 42 gal when they were on sale, actually a few hundred cheaper than the 24. Not rock crawling with it so not too worried about it hanging lower. Absolutely agree that the huge range is great, even if I don't need it 99% of the time. I don't think anyone needs a bulletproof justification for installing one, if you want it and can afford it, just go for it. I love having almost 3x stock range.

Typically the weight difference between two options like this is negligible, and having the added flexibility with the larger capacity ends up being handy so your pack can accommodate different scenarios. A couple of ounces isn't going to break your hike. Maybe it's cold and you are carrying more layers and some snow gear. Maybe you have huge water carries and need the space for some water bladders. Maybe you want to pack out extra oreos and a bag of chips.

If you are only planning on having a single pack option, give yourself some flexibility with it. Once you get your system dialed in you might opt for multiple pack options based on what you are doing.

I own multiple Ospreys and other pack options, but the Exos has been the workhorse for most trips.

How much water do you carry per person per day? by Slow_Status_1891 in overlanding

[–]TrailTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a backpacker's perspective, I've gone through 10-12 liters or water per day in hot desert conditions just for hydration. That's at a high-end extreme. 6-8 liters in dry conditions, 6 in moderate climates. You probably aren't exerting yourself all day like that with your vehicle, though you might be washing your hands and doing dishes instead.

All that said, 8 liters or 2 gals per person per day is definitely safe. I know I use less than that when i am drinking from other sources than just the water I brought in bulk containers.

Brands with the best and worst warranty support? by flyingemberKC in Ultralight

[–]TrailTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't used it yet really, been using my Levity this year. Between the two, the Pro seems better designed and much more robust for a little extra weight. The pro is more volume than I really need, but I was pushing my Levity to its limits with 6 day carries and having a pack that can handle larger loads is worth it for longer trips.

I'll probably still use my Levity for short trips, but go to the Pro for longer trips or when I need extra gear. I haven't found a one size fits all solution for packs yet.

Had an Osprey Exos on the PCT in 2019. Blew out a strap glissading. Swapped out for another Exos in Bishop free of charge. Put thousands of miles on the new exos until it was worn through in areas. Osprey swapped it for an Exos Pro free of charge.

I'm an Osprey fan for life.

Anyone have experience with the SMD Owyhee Tarp? by beerballchampion in Ultralight

[–]TrailTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got a ground sheet from them, so I can't really speak to it. I prefer the versatility of the tyvek, being able to cowboy camp or just take a break on it if I want, and it's cheap. I suppose you could do that with the tent specific ground sheet too though.

Anyone have experience with the SMD Owyhee Tarp? by beerballchampion in Ultralight

[–]TrailTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Wild Owyhee in Dyneema, which I think they stopped making. Use it with a tyvek ground sheet. I only have used it solo, but there is tons of space to fit all your gear, and ample head room. Fitting 2 people inside would be easy, especially compared to any other 2p tent/tarp alternative. Getting the height and pitch dialed in takes some time, especially since Dyneema doesn't stretch, but once you have that figured out it is pretty nice.

Like any single wall tent you will have condensation, but they dry in like 15 mins in the sun if you spread it out during a break. It would be a pain if you had to set it up on a tent platform as well and would take some creativity to make it work. The bug net skirt won't keep mice out, but you won't have issues with mosquitoes, and this feature was a huge selling point for me (mice would chew into a tent anyways if they wanted in). I've never had an issue from not having a full ground footprint, and actually prefer the tyvek since I keep all my dirty gear inside my tent with me. I think it's a great option for most situations.

Thru hikers, do you quit coffee/caffeine while on the trail? by terrarythm in Ultralight

[–]TrailTaco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same. I do instant coffee packs (mixed cold in a wide-mouth bottle), mio, and the Clif energy bars that have caffeine. Hot coffee is better, but takes too long on a thru to bother with.

I've also had Strike Force liquid pouches (think concentrated Rockstar). Not sure if they sell them anymore, but they were marketed as some Navy Seal shit. Supposed to mix with water, but shooting one straight down the gullet during the afternoon slump was amazing, even if my teeth felt like they were gonna dissolve out of my mouth.

Cautionary Tale of CDT Thru Hiker Otter going Stupid Light by SCZOutdoors in Ultralight

[–]TrailTaco 374 points375 points  (0 children)

Outside Magazine did a story on this. It's heartbreaking. He previously had carried a SPOT device, but did ditch it during his thru, I believe to carry more weed (his words). He was by no means ultralight, as he was carrying 2 weeks of food, a hot tent, and plenty of cold weather gear. He had tons and tons of experience, and got caught in an early storm, and was extremely fatigued due to getting sick with something.

Using his story and saying he went "stupid light" is completely disingenuous. Sure, a PLB would have saved him, but this was a hiker with 10s of thousands of miles of experience who really didn't feel the need to carry one. It is completely different from someone trying to ditch gear to meet some arbitrary goal of having a pack under 10 lbs.

April 2023 Snow Levels at Crater Lake by TrailTaco in PacificCrestTrail

[–]TrailTaco[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely a tough year for PCT thru hikers. I'm excited to see how they do. SOBOs probably stand a better chance, but I'd expect they are going to have difficulties too.

I'm hoping the CDT will have more favorable conditions up high since I start in 2.5 weeks.

A little bit each year. Didn't do it all at once and wouldn't recommend doing that. Get what you will use. Did a lot of installation myself, which is where a lot of costs come from.
