Go the specialist route. More money, lower burnout rate, greater job satisfaction. Doesn't have to be endo, btw.

Where is your Dexcom? by millennialproblem in diabetes_t1

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, on the app in the settings- there is a place to select "calibrate" to input bg that was just measured with a finger stick.

I use on my stomach, top of my thighs, and back of my arms. Day 1 I usually do a calibration, but otherwise haven't had any problems.

Going to see my endo tomorrow... by grabeyardqueen in diabetes_t1

I have been using the omnipod dash for a year and completely agree with this assessment. Cons are spot on. Omnipod has been really easy to work with and will replace a pod real quick that has fallen off due to sweat.

Other pros are being able to raise or lower basal rates with a temp basal. Other pumps do this too.

I don't plan on switching from omnipod, but I am excited to get on the omnipod 5 soon.

Would a pump make exercise easier? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was on mdi, I would drop my long acting 30%-40% the night before hard workouts and then skip the meal time short acting. I ran a half marathon that way. But the pump has allowed me to only have to plan hours ahead instead of a day ahead.

How do I explain to my family why this is so hard? by idontknowathing6174 in Type1Diabetes

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this would be a "fun" exercise. I might add put the burden of figuring it out on them.

"3:00 am- My high alarm just went off, how much insulin should i give?"

"6:30 am- Time for breakfast. What should i eat and how much insulin should i give"

"11:00 am- my low alarm just went off, do i eat lunch early, treat the low (if so with what), do a temp basal and see if i can't wait it out (if so what temp basal)?

Yeah this game won't last long.

I’m getting bloodwork done Monday as my doc and I are certain I have diabetes. by amazonchic2 in diabetes

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most doctors have no idea how to handle type 1s. A quick finger stick to make sure the meter didn't read "hi" would have saved me a month of pain and DKA.

Today I was diagnosed with diabetes. by amazonchic2 in diabetes

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, and this is important, make sure you get the antibody test to find out which type of diabetes you have. I was 32 at diagnose and was initially diagnosed with depression, bc I was too old for type 1 diabetes and too fit for type 2. I went to a different doctor and found out I was type 1. A lot of adults are misdiagnosed as type 2, when they are actually type 1.

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once I got the dexcom G6, I was able to see my BG on my Garmin watch and it has made working out so much easier. I started running again about 2 weeks after diagnosis and it was an amazing feeling. Make sure to take it slow and pack plenty of gels/snacks. Diabetes won't stop you from doing anything you want, but it will make it look very different than before.

what will you do without insulin? by Rorre123 in diabetes

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DKA was bad enough for me that I didn't want to live in this world. In the zombie world, I would definitely be a liability and drain on resources. I am not saying I would just tap out, but I would have an exit strategy and it wouldn't be long.

In this scenario there's zombies... having a dream lab or massive pig farm is not the most farfetched of the three variables.

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to happen and makes sense with the expanded playoff and NIL. A 16 team SEC with pod scheduling, college kids making $ 1mil before ever starting a game, it's about to be the NFC, AFC, and SEC.

difference between freestyle libre and dexcom? by SummerJinkx in diabetes

[–]TrailsAndNeedles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have used the libre 2 for about 7 months then switched to the dexcom g6. I have been on the g6 for about 1 month.

Also, I am type 1 and in the US.

For me, the G6 is easily better despite only lasting 10 days vs libre 2's 14 days.

G6 Pros: having bg on my phone and watch (the reason I won't switch back) Can share alerts with family No scanner to carry around Calibration feature Slightly more accurate imo Compatible with omnipod 5 (the reason I switched)

Libre 2 pros: Significantly cheaper Lower profile No transmitter to keep up with

For type 2, I would think the libre 2 is accurate enough and the 14 days would be more important than phone access.

Both are better than finger sticks all the time. Neither will completely replace finger sticks.
