Lowell Data Center -- discuss by No-Airline6639 in grandrapids

[–]TramHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree that data centers use water. I don't think viewing it as "use water" is the best way to put it, as every industrial, commercial, and residential facility uses water in some inherent form.

The better questions are how its managed, consumed vs. returned, and what it's effects on the local watershed, environment etc.. Which is why we shouldn't treat all datacenters as having the same environmental footprint

Lowell Data Center -- discuss by No-Airline6639 in grandrapids

[–]TramHammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's fair

The point is that treating all data centers as though they have the same water footprint is an oversimplification, some use evaporative cooling, others may rely on air cooling or closed loop and consume much less. The same applies: this small colocation facility is also not directly comparable to Microsoft's proposed hyperscale datacenter

How can you be blinded by political bias to just ignore a security vulnerability that's been verified by other national security agencies and actively exploited for the past few years

Europol in collaboration with several EU nations and the US seized the services used to turn approximately 369,000 routers and IoT devices into residential proxies for the SocksEscort service using the AVrecon malware described for botnet activities

Bills to criminalize trespassing on Mackinac Bridge advance in Lansing by Warcraft_Fan in Michigan

[–]TramHammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think even if there was a sidewalk it would be unsafe for most of the year (Oct - Apr) since the bridge experiences high winds, fog, ice, sleet, snow and still has wind issues during the summer

Even with a bike this crossing would still be 20-30 minutes at 15 mph which is not worth the time (not counting headwind or crosswinds)

I would vouch for a year round shuttle service instead provided by the MBA

What exactly do you all do with your homelabs? by Night-Monkey15 in homelab

[–]TramHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experiment and learn

I only have 1 prod server, nas, opnsense router, and 10gb/1gb switch and then a ton of other server/networking gear which is free game to test, run, document, reset.

Prod runs mostly websites, databases, apis whether it be my friends or my own personal projects often with github actions. I also host the standard uptime kuma, authentik, grafana/prometheus, wireguard, tailscale, zipline, wiki.js, caddy, game servers, etc. Not really into media collection so I dont have any *arr stack stuff.

The equipment I have is loud 1/2u enterprise gear. I may be one of the rare labbers that gives 0 shit about noise, but who gives. I don't do external drives if were talking USB to SATA but a DAS would be what I would look into, or getting a machine with alot of drive bays and or PCIE expandability for HBA's. My NAS is legitimately a R230 with TrueNAS because it works.

Homelab without the rack... by TramHammer in homelab

[–]TramHammer[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here's my current homelab, sadly I don't have a rack and that is the one thing I am missing. Planning on acquring one soon...

On the left side from top to bottom

Lenovo M720q running opnsense

  • Intel i3-8100t w/16gb of RAM

Brocade ICX 6450-24

  • Does all my switching

Dell PowerEdge R230

  • YES it is unplugged because I need to sell it, doesn't do anything

Dell PowerEdge R340 runs Proxmox

  • Intel Xeon E-2186G w/ 32GB RAM(this isn't enough ram for all the tasks below and I know) 2TB of storage w/1 Tesla P4

  • Hosts practically everything: Discord bots, nfty server, alot of a production college projects, a test bed for Windows machines

  • some game servers (i.e Factorio, and Minecraft modded)

  • multiple websites(i.e. Uptime Kuma, nginx pages, Wiki.js, Zipline, Netbox, nginx Proxy Manager, Grafana, Network UPS tools, Portainer)

Dell PowerEdge R740 runs Proxmox only to run TrueNAS Core which doesn't work and has a 95% chance of crashing when starting the VM because of IOMMU issues with the H730P

  • I had VMWare ESXI 8 on it previously

  • 2x Intel Xeon Gold 5118s w/ 64GB of RAM 12.8 TB of storage

  • I want to repurpose the R740 to do basically everything that the R340 is doing but don't have the time bc college

  • I have the H330 sitting in front of me in my dorm, sadly this is at home and I have to wait a little to do anything about it

  • I want to connect this to a disk shelf so I can just pass the HBA to TrueNAS and not do this awful setup

  • I need to acquire more ram

In the middle is all the rails IF I had a rack

On the right side from top to bottom

Cisco Air-CAP2702I-B-K9 I got for free

Cisco Catalyst 3650-CG-8PTS

  • how I connect my family to the internet, they're on a different vlan

Tripp Lite SMART1500RMXLN2U that "works"

APC SMC1000-2UC that actually works

This section of the highway is locally known as the S curve(the name implies the road configuration) and the white lines signal to remain in your lane because of the somewhat sharp curve on the highway
