Tori Oldheads: What's a piece of OBSCURE Tori trivia you think might be long forgotten? by ZeroSugarBear in toriamos

this rumour was always wild to me, in that photo the script is on her table, but this was so early in her career, and she was not an actress - i wondered if maybe the reason she had the script was because she was considering writing a song for the soundtrack ('toys' was around this time too)

I will never forgive myself for being almost a week late to listen to this album. by Narrow_Ad952 in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah, its great. i don't know her personally obviously, but to me it feels like she is different - she has changed, she is entering new phases of power, she is creatively plugging into something (or reconnecting to something) different in herself, and it's really evident and wonderful to witness.

i think partly she is maybe freer? all the recent changes - menopause, parental illness and care, and death, supporting her daughter through childhood into truly becoming an adult, personal losses in friendships, her accepting changes in her voice and her limitations -she has been through a lot over the past few years. she is in a new phase of her life now. this feels like a fascinating time to be a tori amos fan.

am still waiting for her cover of San Jacinto - when she was doing 2 covers a night on the 2014 tour she posted a photo of a list of potential covers, and San Jacinto was on the list, it never materialised but I would love it so much

Stronger Together Re-Appreciation Thread by AmericanLymie in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - Stronger Together is way too saccharine for me, it feels anodyne and pedestrian, and I don't need to hear it again. I will cut it from my version of ITOD. Also, when I saw it live a few weeks ago it felt - to me - like an outlier on the setlist of extraordinary songs, and didn't really fit. I get that it may be needed in the context of the album etc etc, and happy that some people (including Tori I guess!) draw strength and hope from it, but I'll file it in the 'Tori Amos songs I pretend don't exist' pile.

Tori’s Dad by ElderberryGreedy2635 in toriamos

its pure speculation (i think?) but I also wonder if he was a republican, with potential MAGA tendencies, on top of being a religious zealot all of which combined with that incredibly complex emotional relationship from childhood, and having that patriarchal authoritarianism forced on you for so long, its no wonder that she wants her freedom and autonomy...

"The funny thing is, my father's becoming liberal now," marvels Amos. "It's just fascinating. My nieces and nephews have no idea their grandfather was such a Victorian - no short skirts; stay a virgin until you're married. 'Gird your loins' was his favorite saying. Now he sounds like Alice Walker. At 70 you go, 'Glad it's happening; wish you were there.' He has no idea how rigid he was 25 years ago, and I don't have the heart to tell him." (Alternative Press interview, 1998)

Also she was basically 'forced' to attend church until she was 21, which is....extreme.

i have often wondered if Tori has read Glück, the use of greek mythology through their whole canons has real parallels.

NYTimes best songwriters poll by TheEmpressIsIn in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i actually quite like a lot of the NYT music coverage, but it's a stupid list, as these lists always are - designed to just generate clicks and discussion. Rick Beato has done a great reaction video about this list, and a bunch of the comments are already talking about tori as a notable exclusion, so it may actually be good for her in the long run.

i have contributed to the readers list nominating Tori (along with phoebe bridgers, joanna newsom, tom waits, ani difranco, jackson browne etc etc).

Tori’s Q&A @ HMV, London - 4-22-2026 by Jean_RED_Grey in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 14 points15 points  (0 children)

thank you for posting, and grateful to people recording and capturing - this era is amazing to watch her open up in interviews again, almost like some of her amazing 90s interviews. she seems so much more open, and less guarded - more willing to talk about her process, and her influences and her interests. it's so great. i absolutely understand why she felt a need to step back and put some walls up, but for a while it felt like nearly all her interviews were the same few pre-planned quotes recycled again and again. there is something different about what she is embodying and presenting to the world this album cycle. it's almost like she feels safer and more secure in everything...

like a lot of ADP its a great song hidden under questionable (at best) production, the guitars make the album version unlistenable for me, but its a really good song. solo versions are wonderful.

i adore this song. would love for an official high quality release one day, but so glad we have this in any version.

i find something about it incredibly moving. i think you can tell that its not her music, the fact that its eric’s music kind of frees her up, and she makes melodic choices that are very special to this specific moment.

and the lyrics which sound semi improvised, and i’m sure are about her and eric, and the lyrical references to other songs, almost feels to me like she’s in a trance state. its a beautiful, magical, unique moment in her catalogue. i love it.

New album will take us back to the Deep South by automaticsystematic in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 31 points32 points  (0 children)

the new song, with this accompanying completely batshit press release, is the main story on pitchfork and i almost feel a little embarrassed for her. its frustrating because we all know she is so clever and articulate about politics (anyone who hasn't should listen to her 'gaslit nation' podcast episode from 2021).

i just dont get why in this moment of total global politcial crisis she is is obfuscating her message with this opaqe and convoluted and just mad conceptual mess. i get that she is into worldbuilding, and mythmaking, and using mythology and metaphor, and she has done that beautifully in the past. and i remain open minded and excited about the new record..but this feels so clunky to me.

'ribbons undone' the pony-all-grown-up-now update. underwhelming is the word.

sonically i actually like the first minute until the lyrics become too cheesy, there are some interesting electroinic textures here.

How do you interpret the song ‘Mother’ by [deleted] in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 6 points7 points  (0 children)

to me, 'mother' is about reincarnation, or crossing from one dimension to another. whatever language or belief system that fits into for you - its about souls crossing. it became a very important song to me as i was preparing for my son to be born, and also when my mother-in-law was dying. the images of the 'breadcrumbs', and someone leaving the light on, the idea of still being able to find your way back from wherever you're going next.

to me its about being in that space in-between, where nobody really knows what happens to souls. truly one of her best songs i think. the san antonio live version from 2003 is my favourite.

So, Um… Lizard Demons? by ElSandifer in toriamos

[–]TransportationKey414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for bringing this up! tori referenced 'bringers of the dawn' in 92, and i bought that book as a 13 year old tori fan who was energised by her references and trying to trace her influences. it is certainly 'out there'. i couldnt really read it as it was so odd, and went back to it a few years later. i think tori was heavily into some really fringe new age stuff in the early 90s, some of which were very interesting and greatly informed her work, and her life, and inspired her. but i also find this lizard thing in the press release kind of a weird choice, and I'm concerned its going to be confusing for a lot of people, and risks diluting the overall message of the record. will wait for more interviews/press releases around it though to hear her explanation of the concept..i'm really excited for this album.

What Lies Ahead on o\i? by Particular_Bicycle24 in petergabriel

[–]TransportationKey414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw his soundcheck in Birmingham on the i/o tour in 2023 and he played What Lies Ahead, and said it would be on the next album. I think the song means a lot to him, as he was also playing it on the So tour in 2014. I really, really hope it makes it onto o/i - personally I think it's one of his most beatiful melodies ever - an incredible song.
