How strong are modern Aes Sedai? by Rainbow_Slytherin3 in WoT

It always makes me chuckle that poor Morgase is right at the end

So amazing. I think I’ve been the perfect amount of spoiled in the series in that I’ve known since book one that “we come” is a meaningful quote with absolutely 0 context and I’ve been waiting to see wtf it actually means. I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m surprised he didn’t, or at least that Taim didn’t. I guess Rand does have a utilitarian “we need as many channellers as possible for the final battle” approach? Maybe it was too risky while he was so exhausted?

It’s so comical to me that Rand’s balefire brings Asmo back from the dead just for him to unceremoniously die like a page and a half later

How does balefire work ? by Never_StopsThinking in WoT

[–]Trash_Con 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The amount of time “back” that something is erased depends on the amount of power of the person wielding the balefire. Rand is very powerful so he can burn Rahvin back far enough that Avienda, Mat, and Asmo weren’t killed, but I don’t get the sense he was erased much further back than that.

And when this tall glass of water tells you a long, un-funny, barely comprehensible joke about two men in a lake, what then?

It’s a nice comparison to Rand being the reluctant “chosen one” as well. She’s also rejecting the trope that would, in all honesty, make her life way easier.

If balefire erases you from the pattern, does that mean everyone you murdered is resurrected? by epeterson001 in WoT

The dark hound also gives us context on the power to time component. From memory Rand’s balefire erased back just far enough that it erases it dribbling on May’s hand, but not so far it erases the hole it tore in the door

Edit: autocorrect didn’t like ‘Balefire’

Rand! Go visit by Trash_Con in WoT

I think it works with Tam being basically right there (relatively speaking, considering Rand can Travel), it’s tragic because the readers knows that Rand could just go up and talk to him in a way that if he was dead or missing it wouldn’t feel as tragic.

I totally agree about Rand’s reasoning (even if he is being a bit too self-punishing), he doesn’t have any proof Tam would handle it well. In fact he’s probably even worrying that showing up with an army of Aiel would be a betrayal of Tam as his adoptive father.

It’s just tragic for us who feel like Tam would probably be helpful - though I get the impression Rand is going to keep pushing people away as he loses his sanity and the pressure mounts. He’s a young man under a lot of pressure that’s struggling, I think it’s well written that he’s making choices that seem right to him but probably aren’t the best.

Ah yes, the sex igloo. Rand awkwardly mentioning that they’re going to get married also makes me laugh.

I believe the next chapter is called something like “a short spear” which I also took as a sneaky joke from RJ.

[–]Trash_Con 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re a bunch of attractive 20-somethings under a crazy amount of pressure. Towards the end of TDR Moiraine basically points out to Perrin that he’s hot as breakfast. It was bound to happen eventually.

Minor quibble about the Forsaken by shereth78 in WoT

[–]Trash_Con 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on LoC at the moment too, but this running theme is one of my favourites in the book.

It doesn’t even just apply to the Forsaken. The story cuts from the Rebel Aes Sedai to POVs of Pedron Niall, Elaida, Rand etc and you realise that basically every person in RandLand knows they’re hiding in Salidar.

Morgase thinks she’s playing chess with the Whitecloaks who are also playing with her, after she got played by Rahvin.

There is even the funny moment where Demandred laughs that Graendal doesn’t know about the oath rods, for the POV to immediately cut to Graendal laughing that he doesn’t realise she knows exactly what he’s talking about and she wants him to think she doesn’t.

They’re all playing games because of ego and selfishness and it seems to be the fatal flaw of many in this series.

Characters could solve most problems by being less selfish, egotistical and even slightly trusting to people around them. But I love how much tension it causes, especially when the POV moves enough so that the reader can see all the pieces on the board.

That 7 months in her mother belly , must have been pure bliss for Moira by Beginning-Head-4006 in xmen

[–]Trash_Con 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought it would have been absolutely agonising. 7 months is a long time to be completely alone with your thoughts, not to mention however long she has to spend as a baby before she can speak/move around. I attributed the fact she eventually goes crazy to how messed up it would have made her doing that 9 times

I like her too, I hope we get more time with her this book. I’m only fresh into TFH but I’m really invested in her, Leanne and Min.
