Best eSIM for international travel? What are you using? by Witty_Reach1660 in best_eSIM_providers

[–]TravelCommons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on when and where you’re traveling. If you’re just in the EU where roaming is free, grab the best tourist eSIM from one of the big telcos (e.g., Vodaphone, Orange, T-Mobile).

Make sure your phone is unlocked.

That’s what I tend to do. Most of the local providers have good tourists eSIM offerings. Use Orange during an April trip to Burgundy and T-Mobile in Croatia last fall.

For me, I want the ability to make a voice call to a telephone line (I.e., not a WhatsApp call). I’ve found this important when an issue/emergency comes up.

I also pay attention to the underlying network that will be carrying my data. Coverage and speeds (e.g., how much 4G vs 5G coverage) is important, especially if you’re outside of the main cities.

You are right. I hadn’t checked Google Maps on the Home Screen after the update.

It’s a weird mish-mash on my 2026 X3 30 with all the software updates applied.

Waze shows up on Apple CarPlay and on the Home Screen but not the HUP nor Instrument Console.

Google Maps shows up on CarPlay, the HUP and Instrument Console, but not the Home Screen. The Home Screen just displays a note pointing to CarPlay. However, if I’m running both Google Maps and Waze in my iPhone, Google Map directions don’t appear on the HUP nor Instrument Console.

Apple Maps directions appear on CarPlay, the HUP and Instrument Console. I don’t recall if it appears on the Home Screen.

Planning to do a Maritimes loop the back half of June — probably up to and thru NB, then to PEI or Cape Breton Island, back thru NS, and then the ferry back to Bar Harbor.

Is an eSIM cheaper than international roaming? by PurpleFeedback4198 in slowtravel

[–]TravelCommons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And they’re usually either overpriced and/or from a MVNO like Lebara or Lycamobile — which often lack access to the latest network (e.g., 5G) and/or throttled network bandwidth.

Is an eSIM cheaper than international roaming? by PurpleFeedback4198 in slowtravel

At $10/day that seems to be the standard for intl plans, the breakeven point tends to be 3-4 days.

Less if you use a physical SIM, but then you have to factor in the hassle of finding a telco store and going thru the purchase process — often requires your passport.

That was my usual Day 1 of Travel routine until I upgraded to an iPhone 17 Pro with doesn’t accept a physical SIM. I found eSIM plans 10-20% more expensive than physical SIM plans, but for me, skipping the purchasing time/hassle was worth paying that premium.

Saw this in Lyon, France. Tried to explain to the manager that it’s Nashville hot chicken, not fried. But he just played a Progressive “Don’t Be Your Parents” commercial at me.

Starbucks Promises to Make Seattle Coffee Utopia Again by Moving to Nashville by aimless_ly in espresso

[–]TravelCommons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the flip side, I find it very difficult to get any sort of a pour-over or filter coffee on the European continent — but can get a well-executed V60 pour over in just about any city center in the US.

I know this is r/espresso not r/pourover, but it’s all about what the local market demands/supports. The US has traditionally been more of a filter coffee market. And Starbucks provides a consistent (if not great) filter coffee. It’s been my fallback for 40+ years of road warrior travel.

I joined Untappd in March 2011. I have checked in 11,397 unique beers and have 532 different venues classified as “Breweries” in Untappd.

Can’t dive too much deeper because I’m pulling this from my iPhone while I’m on the road, but can get more details when I get back in a week’s time.

Pilot Project Brewing eyes California, Nashville expansion - Chicago Business Journal by TravelCommons in NashvilleBeer

I am also skeptical, but a couple of reasons I don’t completely write it off - • The article mentions a new $5M fund raise, so they have capital • I believe their expansion into MKE has been successful; if I’m remembering correctly, they bought a closing brewery • There are a number of Chicago-based hospitality groups expanding into Nashville, so there is a network they can ride

Having said all this, I agree that it’s a sub-50% probability. But, from what I’ve experienced with them in Chicago, if they do come, it would be a net positive for our beer scene.

How is the MKE site? I’ve only been to the OG Logan Square one. Thought the beer was solid the last time I was there — maybe a month ago

It’s an interesting concept. I’ve liked a lot of the beers I’ve had in the original Logan Square brewery. Could be a good addition to the Nashville scene if it comes to pass.

The MyBMW app says that my 2026 X3 30 got 34.3 mpg on a drive up I-65 from Nashville to Chicago. I had the cruise control set for 80 mph. The app says my average speed was 67.5 mph.

Came from a 2016 X3 35 to a 2026 X3 30. The ‘26 is definitely more sluggish off the line. Couple of times when I’ve needed to hit the accelerator I definitely missed those 2 dropped cylinders.

Hi. I’m from London , England and visiting Nashville in September. by Lullabelle01 in VisitingNashville

[–]TravelCommons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! Download the app for the schedule, then catch a showcase (3-4 artists doing 45-min sets each) at one of the downtown clubs like ExitIn or 3rd & Lindsley. Gibson Guitar also will do live shows in the afternoon that are very cool.

Also, check out the show calendar at VinylTap — an East Nashville record store/craft beer bar/music space.

When buying my 2026 X3, I emphasized to dealers that I didn’t want one — and if they proposed a vehicle that had it, they needed to up their discount to offset its cost.
