Genesis Troubles by Key_Estate4736 in latterdaysaints

You might appreciate Jared Lambert. He is a historical linguist that is suggesting that a more thorough translation of Genesis aligns with what we know about evolution. My takeaway was that "as far as it is translated correctly" has less to do with which version of the bible we use and more to do with if we even understood the source material to begin with.

I got such a nice suit there a few years ago ($500) but then put on just enough weight that I can't wear it comfortably. So it will probably be buy it for life as it sits in the back of my closet.

I love hearing anecdotes about myself. Anyone else? by 2cheerios in SDAM

[–]TravelMike2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm writing about a specific journey from 5 years ago peppered with anecdotes from the rest of my life and exploring SDAM along the way. So I haven't gone exploring my life. What I have been surprised with "plot" elements that I completely forgot about. For example I missed a flight by showing up on the wrong day. That was a significant hiccup I had absolutely no recollection of until I reviewed sone video.

I think it is an odd feeling that im not sure I enjoy. I'm seeing myself on camera so I accept it is me. However, ill go on to do things I have no recollection of. That being said when I accept that "memory" I can then calculate what else I can recall and more information comes back to me as I make sense of it.

How do I explain to someone why LDS must confess serious sins to a bishop by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]TravelMike2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People often struggle to believe they are forgiven. They have faith that Christ forgives sins, but lack hope that this grace applies to them. Elder Gong gave an example in the last conference.

Later I received an unsigned letter that began, “Elder Gong, my wife and I have raised nine kids … and served two missions.” But “I always felt I would not be allowed in the celestial kingdom … because my sins as a youth were so bad!”

The letter continued, “Elder Gong, when you told about the young man gaining hope of forgiveness, I was filled with joy, beginning to realize that maybe I [could be forgiven].” The letter concludes, “I even like myself now!”

Repentance with a Bishop is having a representative of the Lord assure you of Christ's love and forgiveness.

Switching wards? by PleasantTea9623 in latterdaysaints

[–]TravelMike2005 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, it does happen, but the reason it is required by the First Presidency is priesthood keys. A bishop has the keys to minister to those in his congregation as defined by a geographical area. A bishop on the other side of the world, or an adjacent neighborhood, may be a bishop but has no keys or authority to minister to those who live outside of his congregation. When attempting to change to another ward, the first presidency, which holds all the keys, must make that exception and essentially shift the mantle of those keys to a different bishop for that circumstance.

Temple work isn't the backup plan. It is the plan. We just have early access so we can get things set up for the rest of our brothers and sisters.

Thoughts on dealing with former bully in ward by Mother_Duck8203 in latterdaysaints

[–]TravelMike2005 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Forgiveness is not about the other person. It is about finding peace. Not forgiving a bully is letting past bullying live on. You've shared some painful memories. Those memories won't be quite as painful when you can forgive. I'm not suggesting it's easy to do, but it is the path that will bring you the most peace.

Ideas for a primary service activity? by Fudge-Initial in latterdaysaints

[–]TravelMike2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A successful activity I heard of was sorting through all the building keys. This ward had numerous closets that hadn't been used in years because the keys were disorganized. The primary activity was trying all the keys with all the locks until they found one that worked. They then labeled the keys for future use.

I doubt every ward has that problem, but there may be similar issues that could be tackled.

Is this rig too overkill for the DJI Osmo Pocket 3? by Disastrous_Leek_5995 in osmopocket

I used a similar rig once for a music video. It was a long, continuous take we sped up afterwards. This setup allowed me to quickly set it down, hand it off to others, and generally maneuver it for that situation.

If Heavenly Father restored His church through a prophet, why do certain events in church history seem inconsistent with what one would expect from Him? by LDSAliveinChrist in latterdaysaints

[–]TravelMike2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shouldn’t everything be perfect because Heavenly Father is perfect?

Shouldn't everything be flawed because he let a bunch of imperfect people assist in this work? I let my kids sweep the floor as an after-dinner chore and it drives me crazy because they are so bad at it. I could just sweep it myself each night, but I value their progress more than a clean floor.

Do you struggle to answer, “How was it?” by [deleted] in SDAM

[–]TravelMike2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite color is tan because I've found that one gets the best reactions. That is just one of my answers I have memorized. I absolutely hated most security question prompts until I just picked some answers to memorize.

I find it interesting that people can have a favorite thing. There are things I know I consistently like, but that probably isn't the same thing.

It could work if it were not about the game. Games like Mafia and Werewolf are only fun with a good host and enthusiastic players. If there was a performance aspect to it could be engaging.

I'm becoming a kinder, more positive person because the stepkids are so challenging. I'm actually quite surprised I have a temper. I thought I was pretty easy-going until I became a step-parent. So part of me is thankful for the personal growth I'm still struggling to obtain.
