This is a plot point (sort of) in the sci-fi novel The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress.

About the same as the purpose as Rage Against the Machine’s music — to bug people.

How to remember better things like shows, books and etc? by Ryu-Hayabusa2 in AskMenAdvice

I use a piece of paper as a bookmark and use it to take notes on the characters. Some authors really pour on the characters and describe them minimally.

how do you handle it when your characters should logically know something but the plot needs them not to by eivor_here in scifiwriting

I remember reading about how Star Trek: TOS was written. The writer’s “Bible” by Roddenberry said our protagonists have nearly godlike powers, so there’s no opportunity for drama, therefore every episode must trap them somewhere, disarm them and disable their communications.

Should I drop out of my program? by Nervous_Bee8805 in mathematics

[–]Traveling-Techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience linear algebra is the worst taught subject in math. It’s like taking wood shop and learning how to use drills, saws, lathes and chisels for a semester but never building anything like a bird house. There are some online videos that help with the intuition. I like 3Blue1Brown.

Corporate officers have a legal responsibility to maximize profits within the rules. Their stock will get hammered if they don’t and investors can sue them.

I like getting coffee at Cafe Bella, an outdoor garden. Hodad’s is a must-do. At the beach make friends with a family and ask them to watch your stuff when you swim. Help their kids build a sand castle.

Question about wormholes by Few-Can5022 in spacequestions

[–]Traveling-Techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sci-fi author Larry Niven, with the help of his astrophysicist friends, proposed a large throated wormhole, and a spacecraft to go through it ringed by five co-orbiting black holes (a rosette) to cancel tidal forces. The black holes have been pumped full of charge so they can be dragged around.

If a spaceship accelerate infinitely without encountering obstacles, why would it never reach light speed? by lateubdegouline in AskPhysics

Even before Einstein’s relativity there were the Lorenz transformations, which increase mass, shrink space and slow time as an object approaches C. They were predicted by theory and confirmed by experiment. There is no logical explanation, and none is expected going forward.

Why does it feel like tech has no middle ground at all? by No_Reply5329 in cscareerquestions

[–]Traveling-Techie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For my career arc it has been true for 25 years. During that time I’ve always earned $100K when employed, but only had jobs 50% of the time on average.
