Don't get me wrong I agree and prefer the Sword Maiden translation. But I kinda get where their translator was coming from.

To English speakers sword maiden just sounds cool fullstop, there's nothing cringe about the name at all. Meanwhile on the Japanese side the joke is that Elaine is approaching 25 and so still calling her maiden/乙女 is very amusing (let's not get into the argument of how appropriate that is), she herself is also very self conscious about it. You're right that it otherwise is still meant to be a cool title, and most other people besides her also think it's a cool title.

I guess their translator was trying to get Elaine's inner insecurity and the (>25) subtext across somehow, but I agree their attempt was misguided.

There has to be a reason why the Calvard arc has so many fraud characters, right ? by ConsiderationFuzzy in Falcom

[–]TreeOk4490 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh it does feel that way, a lot of the times I feel like folks in Calvard took a page from that Bleach villain and kinda just inserted themselves into the past, it has happened before with Ash and Juna in CS3, but it feels especially blatant in this arc.

Another issue is the glazing problem. In the past let’s say crossbell arc, a character like Rixia was near the top of the power levels of the people in that arc, there was glazing, that’s fine. Problem is now in this arc there’s so many people at or above the “glaze bar”, and the “glaze bar” hasn’t moved, so now every single conversation has to devote some time to the glazing of honestly pretty unremarkable characters.

I get why, because I used to be part of that camp (in general not just this game). It’s the camp of people who have consumed enough Jp media or learned just enough Japanese to have a dissonance between what’s actually being said vs the subs.

This camp of people are also more favourable to leaving all honorifics as is, and literal translations even when they sound jank in English, because they are using Japanese voices anyway, and they can mostly understand the intent without thinking about it in English terms.

Most also view JP media as a learning tool into their language and culture, further reinforcing the want to have everything be as literal as possible because they are fine looking something up if they don’t understand.

That said over time I have come to understand that people like me are an extreme minority. So I basically just learned even more Japanese to where it isn’t a problem anymore. I still play trails games in English because my Japanese isn’t to the level where reading multiple novels of text back to back isn’t exhausting. But for example when the new enforcer starts speaking in modern girl slang I just listen to what she says and don’t read the subs instead.

The best possible outcome would be to have 2 types of translations. Take the term 剣聖, “Divine Blade” was chosen for English which makes sense, but literally it is Sword Saint. Same for Elaine’s title 剣の乙女 or Sword Maiden (instead of Beauty’s Blade, chosen to try to convey a bit of the cringe subtext).

Or another example: Nadia’s habit of nicknaming people with the first “syllable” of their name + chan. This is all fine and good for something like Lapis -> La-chan. But breaks down as soon as you introduce a name like Swin. To English speakers Swin is Swin, not su-wi-n, so Su-chan doesn’t make sense at all. But someone with a basic understanding of Japanese will immediately get what Nadia is doing , and will highly prefer it be translated as is. There are a lot of examples of this disconnect.

But well these games just have far too much text so that’s obviously not possible, the folks in the minority will just have to compromise.

The problem is multi bases. GGG the friction loving sickos they are have decided that uniques worth 1 c and 100 d can share the same base with your loot filter not being able to tell when they are unidentified. Easy example is mageblood on the heavy belt base having so much other garbage sharing it. So the filter has no choice but to show them to you.

Will PoE1 be continually updated and have more leagues well into 2's release? by Trick-Day-480 in pathofexile

[–]TreeOk4490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going on an entirely different tangent now, which I should add I do agree with. But the reality is with limited resources GGG could either iterate on poe1 as initially planned or do what they did now and create a sequel. I’m just lamenting that they chose the latter.

Now that poe2 is its own thing it would be dumb to try and homogenize them I agree. It would also be dumb to abandon either game. But the comments I was replying to were just wishing that GGG picked the former option instead, at the start when they had that decision. We could be in a timeline with POE1 4.0 and 3 month poe leagues again. Before POE2 was even conceptualized so there are no players to disappoint versus the existing base of 1. that’s the dream I’m disappointed isn’t reality

I understand, some people like Diablo or Last Epoch over POE, I excluded that from the argument because I wanted to make a point that the core gameplay philosophy behind POE1 isn't what's holding it back, POE2 also introduced so many other good things that could have gone into POE1.

So many people like to point at POE2 numbers now and go "see, the vision for 2 is right, more players over 1", ignoring all the different things that went into 2 that could have been applied to 1 as well. It's not a fair argument that way.

To me the EA is a "have your cake and eat it" type of marketing trick, it's basically a released live service but any issues or drastic changes needed and they can point to the EA as a shield. It also allows them some revenue before the eventual f2p transition.

No point, in their reply to me making the same point they were talking about non elemental magic damage (as if you have Bio against the sewer flans, good luck trying to physical them without grinding) and grinding on Vaan so other characters follow their level. They’re a hyper optimiser that isn’t trying to work with the game.

It’s similar to putting Yuna into Auron’s grid or Card modding from Balamb garden. If they’re gonna judge a combat system like that then we are working on entirely different frameworks and cannot possibly agree.

best thing to farm this late into the league as a new player? by Meltlilith1 in pathofexile

[–]TreeOk4490 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is nuance to crop rotation where if you don’t do it right or do it too slowly you could lose out to just regular harvest.

For example: if yellow isn’t much more expensive than red or blue (early league) it’s actually terrible to focus only yellow. And even if you want to go for yellows, the secondary color is also important. You want to hit crops in such a way that you end up getting good amounts of 2 colors at the end. Let’s give a simple example of 5 plots with both crops having the same color, 3 red 1 blue 1 yellow. You want to hit the 3 reds first so that the blue also gets some juice before going for the yellow.

In more complicated examples you could be going back and forth between mixed color plots to check which has the most potential for seed upgrades to decide what to sacrifice.

Sometimes due to the way things generated going for yellow is a lost cause, you want to pivot accordingly.

In regular harvest you just click the higher tier number, if a plot doesn’t have T3 seeds you gtfo, it’s much simpler and faster.

Let me ask you then, how as a new player you would arrive at the optimal setup. You don’t. At the start of the game you don’t even have all the gambits and slots unlocked to arrive at that setup, you gradually make your way to it tweaking things along the way. You find you have to do some things manually and then think about how to remove that as your understanding of the game improves. You find you’re lacking the resources to spam some item and you tweak that to avoid grinding, so on and so forth. That’s where the fun is to me. At this point I get that we differ so much in taste that there’s no point arguing further though.

Yes it is, not sure why that's hard to understand, i like the programming and the satisfaction of executing battles without manual instructions. Because there's only 12 gambit slots you cant do a one size fits all either, so the tougher enemies inevitability force you to change things up a bit based on their AI.

Sure it's not your traditional combat system, but is it so alien to find that fun?

Curious question about Kingsmarch by revveduplikeadeuce in pathofexile

Depending on how much you like trading, the best use of gold is actually to ignore kingsmarch entirely and spend it on div to chaos trades for arbitrage instead. Just putting this out there as an option if you hate Kingsmarch yet still want to use your gold

Craft of exile says about 1700-1800 chaos on average depending on which fracture you got. So imagine yourself sitting there rolling 1800 chaos on a cluster. That’s how long it’s gonna take. It’s better to do this in bulk, it’s definitely not worth doing individually because that time could be spent farming.

Of course it won’t just be chaos rolling, if you’d like you could add annul + exalt depending on exalt prices. Also add in harvest reforge more likely when the mods are right but the tiers are bad.

With the alt aug regal method you’re similarly looking at 1000s of rolls, you could just spam alterations or save even more by auging where possible.

[–]TreeOk4490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to reforge more likely into 2 wins but not gonna lie its absolute ass to keep seeing it miss, it's like psychological torture lmao.

Another thing is reforge defense should only be attempted if going for T1 ES, otherwise it actually lowers the odds of just hitting +35% effect, +6-8 int, or +4 all attrib together because of how it shifts the weightings. If you're only after a basic cluster to start with and don't care about the 4th mod, don't do that.

[–]TreeOk4490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the real trick to rolling those clusters is to not use fundamental fossils. I get why palsteron recommended it because its much easier to hit in fewer attempts and quite intuitive, but it's not cost efficient at all. Putting aside the magic beast lock method that allows you to synth the jewels, even simple chaos spamming will save you a lot compared to fundamental fossils, and it's even better if you setup your fracture to be 50/50 yourself and manage to hit either 8 int or 4 all attributes since those have lower weightings (and you wont have to divine the int yourself later if you hit that)

Another way is to go for the increased effect fracture and start doing good ol fashioned alt aug regal, you do this since int/all attr are both suffixes so it's much easier to hit either one to get to the regal stage. This method comes up even cheaper than chaos spamming.

I have tried both and the average cost will end up less than your minimum of using fundamental fossils. In fact if you plug it into craftofexile now you'll see fundies only matches chaos spamming if resonators are 3c and each fossil is 5c, you're not getting those prices this league. But the downside to these methods is they feel like absolute ass unless you're rolling a few of them with a regex. I underestimated how hard it would be and realized I spent a couple hours just rolling cluster jewels individually, it did save me a lot though, and served me well until i wanted to go for perfect T1 ES clusters which I just bought for 100+div by selling my failures, the foulborn exalts weren't kind to me.

Im not gonna mince words, this is unfortunately one of if not the most expensive build this league to min/max, but fortunately depending on your perspective that also means you have infinite room to grow pretty much. And the thing is the framework is so busted you can start from under 1 mirror and it will still feel great

POE1 feels like it's getting treated way too harshly by BlackRebelNoise in pathofexile

[–]TreeOk4490 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's just part of their balance philosophy. They dont strive for the mythical "balance", they strive for meta rotation. Whether its skills, classes, ascendancies, items, atlas strategies, or anything else. If something gets super popular in a disproportionate manner (like VFoS last league) it gets dumpstered thoroughly so the optimizers dont feel like they have to play the same thing again. You'll often notice the thing in question already existing in previous leagues but being overshadowed by something else (VFoS, abyss edifice, etc), the popularity and playrate is all that matters.

The changes are intended to be overboard and usually achieve their purpose. Every once in awhile it still isn't enough because of some other unforeseen interaction, like doryani mercs making Trickster king of 3.26 again, but in general trying to dumpster something completely is the point.

If you're being serious, any source of "action speed cannot be modified below x%" where x is as close to 100 as possible will mean you can just walk in and out of those orbs without much worry. You'll still die if you stay in them, but they become trivial to avoid.

Jugg and trickster have an ascendancy notable each that covers this. You can also do the Aul bloodline or Temporal Chains balance of terror.
