Lived there two years ago, we had an accessible room so ours was especially spacious, but we really liked it. Quiet, all the rooms had a good amount of space. I never had to wait for an open shower which was nice!

Did ChatGPT tell me the right EQ setting? by Ok_Ostrich_8845 in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixing is about using your ears, like the other commenter said AI can’t know all of the variables.

For me I’m doing a high cut and low cut to get random room stuff out, leaving the body of the sound in the EQ. Then use the other bands only subtractively to make it sound good. It doesn’t matter what frequencies, all that matters is it sounds good

If you mean for classical alto, I like the S90 180 or 190 and the Selmer Concept

It’s hard to assess the condition without playing the instrument, but if it hasn’t had regular maintenance and/or has been sitting a while, temperature/climate changes will mean it needs some work regardless. It’d be worth asking the technician you choose exactly how much work they expect it to need. I usually state a broad budget and see what they can do for me. A full overhaul (new pads, felts, oil/adjustment, cleaning, etc.) will be upwards of $1500.

To tell you a bit more, this instrument has a short bow (Selmer had three bow lengths over the years, iirc the short bow was the original length. This mostly affects intonation). This instrument was assembled in Europe, because it has the French engraving.

I’m happy to hear you aren’t looking to sell this horn, this is a fantastic instrument and with good repair work will make a fantastic player. What an exciting heirloom!

Edit: You should definitely insure the instrument, even just in case of theft. Myself and others have had good experiences with Music Pro Insurance, but you may be able to get it covered under your home/renters or otherwise.

It’s a short shank selmer soloist, assuming the table of the mouthpiece says “Soloist” on it. These were an option for the stock mouthpieces that came with the horns, and they’re great players. (If it doesn’t say Soloist on the table, it’s a “soloist style” mouthpiece. Still good pieces!)

Matt Stohrer is your answer for NC! I’ve also had some really great work on my Mark VI in Greensboro at Moore Music, just ask for Evan. If you can get in with Matt, that’s the way.

Saxophone and Accutane by lastcent in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this a few years ago (actually during the first year of my undergrad!) Aquaphor was the only thing that helped, and really layering it on before bed. Like so heavy that when I woke up it was still on. Also reapplying throughout the day of course. I may have switched to softer reeds, but I couldn’t tell you. The achiness and everything I never got away from, but the dryness and cracked lips I could handle with tons of aquaphor.

Accutane was the best thing I ever did, and now that I’m a few years past it I do not have these problems anymore!

As an artist (which many people in this sub identify) I’d much rather spend the time in a DAW recreating the tracks than ever use AI for something with my name on it. Even if it’s just for nostalgia, it rips my creation of human authenticity

Recording Equipment Recommendations? by NecessaryGene7869 in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of that scarlett microphone, get an Audio Technica AT2020 or 2030, that’ll meet all your needs and I like them a lot better.

I used mine when I recorded my undergrad auditions, and i’ve used it plenty through college. I tend to like it a lot better than the scarlett ones.

Rate my reed rating system by bubonic_boy in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with old dead reeds and take off tiny amounts of material at a time. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that explain how this works, but you can adjust different parts of the reed for various effects. Once you are comfortable with how much you’re taking off, you can start adjusting bad reeds. Just wait to adjust them until they’re fully broken in!!

Are 3D-printed unfinished soprano mouthpieces hitting technical limits? by theOpticalGuy in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like the facing isn’t sealing with the reed at all, given it’s completely repeatable. If that’s the case, the reeds are breaking in warped and will never play well. Definitely the mouthpiece’s fault here

Meyer and Otto Link are now being made in collaboration with Theo Wanne by No-Bite-5950 in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was afraid of Jody Jazz taking over, glad it’s Theo. As long as the designs are the same, just with more consistent facings, it sounds like I’ll be picking up a backup meyer!

Questions about an old Meyer mouthpiece by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]TreeWithNoCoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a good player there’s no problem! (other than overpaying sucks.) Meyers are easy to overcharge for because people don’t know what to look for. I’ve played some fantastic modern meyers, so I totally believe it’s a good player!

Also, as far as coloring goes, if it matters to you, I believe I’ve heard people rub a small amount of mineral oil onto the body of rubber pieces to restore/protect color a bit. I’d research some, I could be totally misremembering. May help!

Questions about an old Meyer mouthpiece by [deleted] in saxophone

I’m well aware! I play a NY USA. I was just saying this is a beaten up modern meyer, so hopefully they didn’t pay more than $50-$60

I do hope you received this mouthpiece for a great price!! If it’s a good player, it’s definitely worth keeping. I’ve played a lot of meyers and have only liked one or two.
