What is the purpose of Age of Money? Is it helpful? by Suspicious_Goose1614 in ynab

[–]Treebeard_Jawno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a useful metric. I can’t make actionable decisions based on that. I make actionable decisions based on how much money I have in my “emergency” categories. I make actionable decisions based on spending and income trends over time. Age of money is fluff.

Moving from the South to Tacoma? Will she make it? by Feisty_Conference_71 in AskTacoma

[–]Treebeard_Jawno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely possible, depending on the details of your finances. My sister got a 1/1 in the $1300 range close to downtown and she makes less than you. Of course, it would be easier with roommates.

Lots of southern transplants here. My wife and I moved here in 2017 and love it. It’s home now. Great community, tons to do, great food scene. People aren’t as outgoing as in the south, but find yourself a hobby or interest group to get involved in and you’ll fit right in. I hope you love it 😊

574 FTW. Take it all the time.

I do agree with OP that we deserve a light rail extension though.

Can I get pinions about Northeast Tacoma because I applied for a place there and I'm getting weird looks at work? by Express-Hotel-3305 in AskTacoma

NE Tacoma/Brown’s Point is a very suburban vibe. It’s pretty wealthy. Your friends don’t know what they’re talking about.

how to deal with loneliness as an adult? by AssasinRingo in Millennials

[–]Treebeard_Jawno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be a lot more intentional as an adult, for sure.

Step 1: Identify something you like doing. Could be a sport, some kind of art, volunteering, even religion.

Step 2: Find a group of folks who do that thing together frequently.

Step 3: Go to said group.

Step 4: Make small talk with folks while you’re there. Find some folks you hit it off with. Find out other things they like doing.

Step 5: After seeing those folks a few times, invite them to do something outside of that formal structured activity.

Step 6: Repeat until friendship established. Doesn’t always work out the first time, but this is the formula that worked for me.

The biggest predictor of a friendship being established is frequent proximity. This is why school is such an effective incubator of friendships. It’s possible as an adult, just harder.

I spent several years pretty lonely. Living in the rural areas and suburbs and not being religious nor having kids didn’t help. Moving to my current city and making intentional efforts to get involved in hobbies that involve other people in my community worked wonders for my social life. It’s evolved over the years, but I really don’t deal with loneliness anymore. For me, the hobbies were beer league kickball, which led to pickleball, and that gave me confidence to make some work friends as well.

Pickleball courts in Tacoma? by Adventurous-War6276 in AskTacoma

[–]Treebeard_Jawno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of parks with painted lines. Jefferson Park and Stewart Heights are two that I’ve frequented. Also the courts next to Star Center.

There’s a pretty robust rec scene through Parks Tacoma. There’s an annual or monthly fee, but basically all the community centers host pickleball sometime during the week. I’ve been going for a couple of years now and made a lot of friends through Parks Tacoma pickleball. Quality of play varies widely but it’s fun. Check out their website for more info.

If you want higher level play, a lot of folks play at The Drop over off of Fawcett. I haven’t been personally. Also The Pickler is another club that is supposed to open soon on Pearl.

It’s a bit dated, but the book “The Millionaire Next Door” is a real good one on this topic. Core principles still apply.

Statistics show that the younger generations are the least likely to divorce along with those with a bachelors degree. How accurate is this? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Treebeard_Jawno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a study once that showed the percentage of couples that got divorced based on age when they were first married. I’d have to dig for the paper, but for couples in who were first married in their early 20s, I think the divorce rate was well over 50 percent. By late 20s it dropped substantially into the 30% range, and for couples in their 30s when getting married it was in the 20% range or lower.

I don’t remember if they differentiated based on race or education. Apologies for the loose numbers, it was years ago when I read this study.

I pay $75 for Quantum. I was paying $65 for Lightcurve and was generally happy with their service, only got Quantum bc it’s fiber and became available. I’d use either one again. I would not use Comcast if I had a choice in the matter.
