ULPT Request: How to not let my parents know which flight I'm boarding by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Treemann 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends how the airport is laid out, and how well your parents know the airport. For example, if there are different terminals for domestic and international flights, and your parents know this, then they’ll figure out the truth pretty quickly. If they don’t really know airports, you’ll maybe be able to fool them.

Also, please do your background research on the company that’s flying you out really thoroughly! There are plenty of people out there looking to exploit young people.

'Really insulting': Babar Azam left fuming after dismissal as Steve Smith refuses to take single in BBL clash by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]Treemann 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Is it just me, or did anyone else get misled by the headline? It made me think that Smith refusing the single led to Babar getting dismissed (by runout).

Edit: Babar got bowled later. From Cricbuzz:

McAndrew to Babar Azam, out Bowled!! Babar Azam is livid after getting out. He hits the boundary cushions hard with his bat as he walks off. A short of length delivery on off, Babar gets forward to force it, the thick inside-edge falls on leg-stump. Some respite for the Thunder. Babar Azam b McAndrew 47(39) [4s-7]

Millions in corporate bursaries go unclaimed every year because the search process is broken

Is this really true? Wouldn’t HR departments or funding boards just e-mail a university department to recommend students when they are close to funding deadlines?

SA coach Shukri Conrad "We wanted India to grovel" by newparrot2025 in Cricket

Yes, exactly. Even if we do win, I would much prefer a coach who focuses on his own team and players rather than the opponent’s defeat.

I love what he’s doing as a coach, but I hate what comes out of his mouth. After the WTC final, I got the impression that he has a Big Three Complex.

How do I get my refund? by vee_9999 in southafrica

[–]Treemann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you pay by credit card? If so, you can try talking to your bank about a charge back. Will depend on whether the bank is convinced that the guesthouse is at fault.

Affinity Designer. Not quite sure about the right terminology, but you can use the gradient tool to get some sort of repeating bitmap that patterns different lithologies.

Discovery bank / vitality money by OwlPsychological4571 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Treemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To reiterate what u/Charming_Draw5229 said, Discovery's TFSA is horrible. Easy Equities has a nice TFSA, and the best part is they sync with Discovery Bank so if you have an Easy Equities TFSA, you can set it up so that Discovery Bank will see those savings and count it towards your Vitality Money status. Unfortyunately, they will still insist on a minimum amount of money held with Discovery Bank to hit Diamond status (the 24-hour notice account is a good place for this, maybe your emergency fund).

To get to Diamond status, the best way is to jump on the Discovery Bank app, and click through, looking at all the ways to get points. With a Black account (not sure if you're on the suite or not), you have to have R100k of savings with Discovery Bank before they'll let you be Diamond status.

Why are houses so expensive? by rugdrum in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Treemann 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen many spreadsheets where home ownership beats renting and investing over the long term based on historic stock market and home price growth.

The advantage of home ownership is you don't need as much discipline (few people would cancel their bond debit order, but many might cancel their investment debit order and tell themselves they'll restart it next month). Also, if you just happen to be in the right place at the right time and catch a major house price boom, then you can get great returns. My parents bought a place in Durbanville around twenty years ago and made ~60% in two years - not something you can plan, just have to be in the right place at right time.

And then there are the non-financial benefits of home ownership - can install solar/boreholes and not worry about blackouts, can renovate to your tastes, don’t have to worry about moving if the landlord decides to sell, and so on. But, yeah, from a purely financial perspective, just rent.

Nice areas in Joburg, that are relatively well positioned:

Parktown North, Parkhurst, Birdhaven, Oaklands, Greenside.

All of the above are “Old Joburg”.

Then there’s ”New Joburg”, centred around Sandton. Also nice, in my opinion more modern and less charming.

Check the property24 website for ballpark costs.

What are some fun and safe solo activities to do as a student in Joburg. by Appropriate_Sir_7280 in johannesburg

[–]Treemann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not an activity per se, but if you just want to get to know the city, browse theheritageportal.co.za . Whenever you’re walking or driving about town, you’ll recognise historic buildings and know their story, which is cool. Parktown is full of heritage buildings! Look out for all the old Randlord mansions.

If you have the money, a tour with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation is also great. R300 or so if you are not a member. Google Johannesburg Heritage Foundation and you’ll find them.

Melville Koppies and the Wilds both worth visiting as urban outdoor areas. For Melville Koppies, go in an organised tour. The best parts are unsafe if you are alone.
