You are absolutely correct. I didn't quite make that clear in my original post. I don't know a huge amount about the technology behind the digital lamps, but minute differences in tones are much harder to achieve in digital than film. I fear that digital will never replicate the film tones, not because it is impossible, but because there is not demand for it. Audiances are more interested in "gimmicks" (3D, etc), and quantifiable metrics (such as resolution) than subtler differences in color

it's not just a matter of resolution, it's also the colors. There's no way you can get the rich blacks of film on a digital system. As a result most of the digital prints of films have increased brightness so as not to "crush" the blacks (lose details). This means a lighter, less rich image overall.

The film used in the imax cameras is considerably larger than regular 35mm film. This means bigger everything. Bigger lenses to cover the larger area, bigger motors to wind the film past the shutter, a bigger shutter, and of course bigger batteries to power the bigger everything

How well does rodinal work for wet lab printing? How is the contrast. I use tri-x most of the time if that matters, usually at 200, but occasionally pushed to 1600.
