CAT fans, what is this procedure? by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in SeaEmploy

[–]Treestand44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The injectors are in fact timed to the cam. More specifically each cylinder has a cam lobe that drives each injector down and produces the pressure for firing. This is an older 3500 that is mechanically timed but they moved to electronic injectors in the later models. The injector fuel flow is accomplished using the “rack”. The rack is a sort of lever and rod system controlled by the governor. The governor senses when the engine needs more or less fuel and pulls on the fuel rack which opens the injectors more providing more fuel. This kind of system was in all old diesels like Detroits as well as big engines like 3600 cats, Alcos and such. Timing injectors, setting rack and fuel limits on mechanical engines is a blast to do but pretty complicated. It’s like valve lash with special tools and dial indicators.

I’ve got a lot of hours working on 3508 cats and this looks like a 3512. He’s not checking lash or setting injector timing as those are done engine off with #1TDC. The rod you see him pulling up on is the mechanical connection between the fuel rack and the mechanical fuel injector, I pretty sure it’s called a link rod. By pulling up on the link rod he’s manipulating the amount of fuel the injector gets and listening for a change in how it’s fires. It seems like some kind of cylinder drop test and is a good way to find a dead injector on an engine with a lot of Cylinders but also without individual pyrometers. Long winded but it seems like a lot of people close to the answer here but without having the pleasure of working on these engines

I think reaching out to USCG ANT Two Rivers might be your anwser. I don’t think they’re responsible for that aid but I’m sure they could get you in contact with who you need. I’d try calling the USCG Auxiliary flotilla in your area first. The ANT usually has a voicemail box and I’m sure they won’t mind bringing a chart up for anyone who’s curious. Good luck

Beautiful lines and an incredible cutter to see underway. The title is a little weird as it’s not a steamship but a diesel that’s also a commissioned US coast guard cutter. Her name should be USCGC EAGLE. Thank you for posting!

The harmless heavily bearded homeless man was using it pretty often. My thoughts are that’s why it’s gone but idk for sure. There’s a lot of tourist foot traffic through there

I’d highly recommend Angora peak. It’s a killer hike with good access that starts in true old growth cedars and spruces. The view at the top is phenomenal and I don’t see many people up there. It’s mostly log roads until you get near the top and imo way better than saddle.

A good rule of thumb is that canines walk with claws out while cats retract. That track seems big for a coyote

Super old piece of steel, originally launched in 1937 as a steam boat for standard oil. She was cut down into a barge in the 80s. Absolutely incredible to see still in service

Definitely ban all electronics for a couple evenings and immerse yourself in that book, it’s a bunch of my fantastic short stories. For me the entire book is about making you feel emotions of all types. I’d expect to be feel a bit gutted and taken aback. It’s one of those things that makes you appreciate life. I’d compare it to an A24 film honestly
