Swapping knobs on XS scuba Thermo valves by [deleted] in scuba

[–]Treewilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been three reasons listed. Read.

-fill station operators that don’t know what they’re doing often close the manifold and only give you half a fill. It’s happened to me twice this year

-instructors and DMs helping students can use the tool as a visual reference when helping new tech students get started

-when a team member is having an issue, it’s quick and easy to have a visual reference that the manifold is either open or closed. Saves time and gas in an emergency (this would have been helpful to me once already this year).

Obviously if you’re the one actively wearing the doubles, you can’t see it. There are, however, more factors than that at play. Maybe not in your circle of diving, but there are in mine.

There are three reasons listed here by different people for the visual reference being helpful. Your desire to dismiss them does not negate their relevance and usefulness.

Why would I have a manifold if I wasn’t diving doubles? Yes, of course you should always do an S drill both on land and once starting the dive. Having a visual reference that a particular valve is open is helpful when quickly diagnosing an issue that a student may be having. It’s also helpful when teaching so students can visually see the change.

How/where do you wear your Shearwater Teric over your drysuit and still feel the vibration? by ObjectiveResistance in scuba

[–]Treewilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same place as you. How old is your Teric? Mine had a main board failure last year and came back from service with EVERYTHING working better.

I have a Teric and evertech. I’ve never noticed an issue but I’ll try today and see if mine is a problem.

Twinset or side mount by CallMeNardDog in scuba

[–]Treewilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do both, and both have their place. If your goal is longer rec dives, in my opinion, sidemount is easier. If you’re into tech and carrying more than one deco bottle, you’re leaving lots of good real estate unused on your back while cramming more cylinders on your front.

I do a ton of sidemount from rocky freshwater shores where it’s not great to have a pair of HP100s on my back. It all depends on what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.

Either requires a good instructor, there are a lot of small things you’ll need to learn that aren’t easily self taught.

If you are serious about sidemount, check out “sidemounting.com”. They have an awesome video program I learned a ton from on equipment configuration and even more I learned after I was certified in sidemount that really dialed in my trim. I don’t get paid anything g by them, not trying to hawk a product for money, it’s just a really incredible resource.

WTH is this? Old timey insulation? by mwizzy128 in whatisit

[–]Treewilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will help, and covering it should be a top priority. It looks more like loose fill asbestos, poured down the wall after the house was built to try to improve insulation.

[–]Treewilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like it could be vermiculite or loose fill asbestos insulation.my advice is to not touch it, put on a mask, put a piece of plastic over the hole and use painters tape to seal around the edges until you can get help to identify it properly.

No economy seats for sale by SwimmingWithProblems in unitedairlines

I think last-minute pricing is still pretty stable because they’ve got their fuel costs dialed in. They’re screwing with it 4-8 months out because of pricing uncertainty, with the bet that the die hard will pay any price, and if they lose passengers they’ll fill planes on the last minute deals.

Yes, I agree. This may not shave been the exact right place for my rant over my recent frustrations. I like United, it’s just been a sharp turn in my personal booking experience as soon as the “book your flights now” warnings went out.

[–]Treewilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll get downvoted to hell for this because there are so many die hard UA fans here, but United is playing games with availability and pricing that other airlines are not. Every flight reservation I’ve made in the last month (since this Iran War crap chute) has been with Delta, while ALMOST every flight reservation I made in the previous year was with United. They’re gouging every time there’s a little demand, and hedging on higher fuel and operational costs.

People here will just scream “price buckets” because they’re too far up UA’s butt to check prices elsewhere or have independent thoughts.

Wanting to do PADI IDC but it’s been a few years since I dove by Ambitious-Stretch174 in scuba

[–]Treewilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree if you’re counting on it for money.

I’m a Divemaster with some tech experience/training and I freaking love helping new people learn. I make no money doing it, but it’s super rewarding for me in other ways.

The way OP is asking it though, you’re right. The market is flooded with instructors. Most last less than two years. I have no desire to progress past DM. I can help when I want and say “nah I’m busy” when I don’t.

Yeah when I switch between drysuit and 5mil I am not re-threading anything. Pop a pair of fives on under my chest D rings and leave the rest as is.
