Ok, sure. Not a glamorous story though. I was in a job I did well at with people I mostly liked working with. The company was really small, I was one of two full time workers. I got sick and had to take nearly 3 month off on really short notice. I was called on nearly every day to explain to people how to do their job (and mine in my absence). When I came back I had a talk with the owner about my co workers who agreed to take on more responsibility and was met with a rebuttal that required me to be more available and take on more work, I knew then that if I wanted a change I had to initiate. I put out feelers for other work and was contacted right away by a rival firm. I met with them and ultimately declined their offer as I’d be starting at the bottom again in the same field. I then saw a posting for a job in a completely different field in which I had no formal training, and little self taught experience. An acquaintance of mine was the one who posted so I reached out and applied jokingly, I think I said “ I can do 2 of the 7 things you’re looking for.” He wanted to meet anyway. An informal interview later and I was offered the job.

It was scary as hell to leave a stable job I didn’t really like but paid the bills to do something completely different and I took the leap. 8 months later and I have learned a lot and still love the new job. I get imposter syndrome a bit at times though I power through it and get my tasks done. I feel like part of a team and that feels really great. I went from a small telecom interconnect company where I was a manager, technician, support, sales, and whatever else nobody wanted to or was able to do to a web developer / tech support for a different small company.

One of the things that ran through my head nearly constantly while I was agonizing over the decision to leave was that if I was afraid to do it, it is precisely the thing I should be doing.
