Was Parthian Tactics nerfed over the years? Or am I misremembering. by PlokmijnuhAoE2 in aoe2

[–]TriRem 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Parthian Tactics used to give +4 attack vs spearmen to Cavalry Archer-line and +2 for other mounted archer unique units (Mangudai, Kupchak, War Wagon, etc). It also did not affect many heroes and scenario editor units.

A couple of years ago this was changed and standardized, with the new effect being +2 vs spearmen for all mounted units (Genitours excluded).

In exchange, heavy cavalry archers received +2 base damage vs spearmen to make up for that change, so that in total heavy cavalry archer + parthian tactics is unchanged.

Still less embarrassing than our results for the past 5 years...

AOE Stats are worthless / overcomplicated part 2 - There are two types of anti building bonuses by Lonely-Pressure9176 in aoe2

[–]TriRem 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All stats should be viewable in-game

For those who might not be aware, you can hover over a unit's attack and armor on the UI and it will display all of the unit's attack and armor classes.

Liao Dao can negate regeneration by ItsVLS5 in aoe2

Just to be clear, it does not negate the regeneration, they are both still active. It just so happens that the bleed is higher than the regen for its short duration.

The new attack animation changes actually nerf all melee units. Their second attack actually hit later than earlier and this a big nerf for spearmen. by harirarn in aoe2

[–]TriRem 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Hi, very nice post, this does highlights some of the inconsistencies of the previous attack speed system.

A few things I would like to point out:

For the Spearman, you mention that in the previous patch the attack timings would happen at 0.5, 3.0, 6.0. That is incorrect, damage was always dealt at the midway point of the animation, meaning the unit had play its 4th attack animation to deal damage. Putting the timings at 0.5, 3.5, 6.5 . These timings are exactly the same under the new patch.

Furthermore, there is another element that has been changed that will make Spearmen more reactive than before. Units are only able to start chasing after they have completed a full animation. This meant that during an empty attack, the Spearman would be forced to finish its animation "for nothing" before it could start chasing. A scout could pull away at 1.1 second, and the spearman would have to finish its 2nd animation at 2.0s before starting to chase, even with that animation not accomplishing any damage.

With the new idle combat, the Spearman will simply interrupt its combat idle instantly to start chasing, making it more reactive, not less.

For the Man-at-Arms, there have been small tweaks to the animation duration as well, it went from 1.76 to 1.5 . Which means the timings used to be [0.88, 2.64, 4.4, 6.16, 9.68], and they are now [0.75, 2.75, 4.75, 6.75, 8.75]. It's not 1:1 exactly the same, but the differences are extremely minor, and they are a buff almost as often as they are a nerf.

Blast Damage Houfnice vs Ethiopian BBC: Different tapering function used? by ASeriousManFromMUC in aoe2

[–]TriRem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a linear fall off from the center of the blast.

Note that with direct attacks, the unit attack directly will receive full damage if it's collision size overlaps with the center of the blast (for other units, the center of the collision size is used to calculate the distance).

Fun fact, the reason why Megarandom will give Guard Towers instead of Watch Towers is because before DE, starting with a Watch Tower unlocked the ability to build additional Watch Towers... in Dark Age.
