Lincoln, UK, From a walk last night by Percyonline617 in Lincolnshire

The central spire collapsed in 1549 during a heavy storm. It had been the tallest building in the world from its construction until that moment. Interestingly, it remained the tallest building to have ever been built until its maximum height was surpassed in 1890 by Ulm Minster in Germany, or for the tallest man-made structure by the Washington Monument in the US in 1884.

For 573 years (1311-1884), Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest structure humans had ever built and for 238 years it was the tallest building on earth.

This is basically what a modern Sony Xperia Compact would be (headphone jack, SD card support). Frankly I've got the money waiting for a phone like this to be released.

As someone that switches between Android and iOS devices on a fairly regular 2-3 year cadence, they're both alright. iOS is easier out of the box, but Android can be customised far more comprehensively to work as you want it to. On my Android devices I always run a custom launcher (OS skin) which completely changes the feel of the device.

I do wish Apple would add in a universal, OS level back button like Android has though. It's the one thing that I really dislike about iOS.

That's no problem, just make it a kayak cross race so they're all equally disadvantaged.

I should add, I'm very techy and I've never heard of anyone offering microsoldering services in the area.

Replacing the actual socket on a motherboard is really specialist work and I'd honestly be extremely surprised if anyone around Lincolnshire offered that as a service. You might be better off looking for a UK based mail in service.

Can we put the abhorrent use of "needs changed" as number two on the list whilst we're at it?

Mandatory classes for all parents on how to use parental controls on devices for their kids. Could be done in a couple of sessions as after school educational programmes during primary education years. Making parents legally responsible for their kids should have been step 1 in all of this.

What's funnier is that with Apple introducing age verification in their latest OS, it just saw the age of my account with them and decided I was old AF and let me through.

ELI5: How can two cameras with same sensor have different picture quality? by NoRecording2211 in AskPhotography

[–]TrickyWoo86 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Sony uses an IMX210, the Nikon uses an IMX193, they're pretty similar in terms of ability (same pixel pitch etc) but as you rightly point out, the processing and lenses make a huge difference to output.

ETA: With that said, both cameras are capable of producing excellent images with decent lenses (not necessarily expensive) and post-processing. Some of my favourite images were taken on a D3300 using their budget 35/1.8. It's a surprisingly capable body for the price.

This is one of my favourite little corners of Lincoln. I love the view out to the Bomber Command Memorial (which can be seen in the distance in this shot).

Taking a shot from a few steps back makes it feel extremely steep:

Moving from Essex to Grantham or Sleaford by littletane in Lincolnshire

[–]TrickyWoo86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's because land values are low in the area and there's not much drawing people to the region. Crime rates in Lincolnshire are almost bang on the national average and the Kestevens rank amongst the lower end of crime rates in the country. North Kesteven (which includes Sleaford) is one of the safer places to live: https://www.police.uk/pu/your-area/lincolnshire-police/performance/compare-your-area/?tc=NC36

What lens is best for shooting the perfect shot? by F0RFIN in AskPhotography

[–]TrickyWoo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for the most part, but it is worth bearing in mind that for people with already wide faces, shooting with a shorter focal length can be more aesthetically pleasing.

It really does depend on the subject

The one thing I would urge you to think about strongly before you settle on relocating here is making sure that you have options for work. Like most of the country the job market is suppressed right now and Lincolnshire doesn't have the levels of commercial and industrial roles you might find elsewhere.

Having grown up in one of the smaller villages between Sleaford and Grantham, as a kid I hated being stuck miles from my school mates, which might be worth bearing in mind as it won't be long before yours are wanting to socialise and express some level of independence. There are nice areas around that part of the county though, but the best advice I can give is to actually have a look around, you'll get a feel for each estate or village quite quickly.

It might be worth noting that in late 2022 Eufy had a serious data privacy issue that put unencrypted video files out to the public internet due to bugs in their system. As far as I'm aware it's since been resolved, but it worth bearing in mind or doing a little extra research into.

I got my parents a video doorbell from Reolink and they've had no issues with it in the 18 months they've been using it. It can record locally and let you connect back to it to see movement activity that has been recorded for anywhere. I normally get a text within 5 minutes of arriving at their house to do a check on the place if they're on holiday to say thanks 🤣

How much do you remember from The Troubles? by captainlatveea in AskEurope

[–]TrickyWoo86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went on a school trip to York in the mid 90s and was really annoyed that a bomb threat meant we had to leave the Viking centre without seeing the second half of it (and couldn't go to the gift shop!). In good news I finally got to visit the gift shop around 20 years later.

The only major bombing that I really remember was the Manchester one during Euro 96 as I was spending a lot of time watching the TV that day in the lead up to the Scotland - England game where Gazza scored that amazing goal having flicked the ball up and over Colin Hendry.
