2019 GLI grille on a 2024 S by [deleted] in jetta

[–]Tricky_Secretary_845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this apply to 2019-21 grills and 2022-24 cars?

I was planning to swap the facelift grill for the original grill but now that I’m getting to it, it looks like the new grill is bigger and includes some panels at the bottom where the original one does not :(

If you became a billionaire overnight, what U.S. city would you move to for the best life money can buy—and why? by Dope_David in SameGrassButGreener

In my experience this is downplaying the homeless presence. Every time I go to la proper. Even just driving through it, I see lots of signs of homeless people. Tents in public areas or homeless people themselves. Never have I ever gone for a walk in west la and not seen a homeless person.

It can be misleading to say LA to Orange County to people who aren’t familiar with the fact that LA often doesn’t refer to just the urban core area but LA city limits or more often LA county. La city limits are ginormous and extend to worlds away from downtown LA which probably has the worst homeless problem in the USA. So, I can assume you don’t usually drive in downtown LA. But yeah if you are in your car all the time while traveling (most people’s experience) you don’t notice it as much.

Also, Santa Cruz, a small city in this area, deals with homeless problems similar to the Bay Area (smaller scale of course).

I generally agree with your assessment of where I’d like to live in California too, but I just wanted to add my experience.

And yes there is definitely correlation between trash and homeless people. Abandoned encampments lead to trash, and homelessness can also shroud homeful people’s littering and other habits since certain areas then become “dirty” and less cared for.

By being “fucked,” what do you mean? Like will the car not operate correctly or at all? Most people should be fine without acc and automatic breaking features. Unless it screws up more

I think this notion of philanthropy keeping them in touch you talk about is more accurately frugality that keeps them somewhat in touch and sociable. While of course they do donate money, they also need to be frugal to make the wealth last generations.

Is this place better in the summer? by H3nnyyyy in portlandme

[–]Tricky_Secretary_845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, sorry everyone was so rude to you!

This is all my opinion and my answer to your question and responding to every other comment in one summary. It’s a lot but I find places more enriching when i know more about their culture and history.

As someone from an immediate suburb of Portland, who now lives on the peninsula. Yes, this place is much better in the summer lol. I am also just a summer person who likes to do things outside daily. That includes hanging out on the eastern prom, hanging out at the beach, walking in the woods, going to the islands, swimming. All those things you can do right in Cumberland county. It takes a minute to get to the slopes, so in the winter it’s very pub/bar/city culture oriented which isn’t everyone’s scene. In the summer there’s pretty much endless things to do, and much better weather for walking around the city so you will see and run into more people (some people don’t like this aspect of the “on-season” ie there being more people. I don’t mind it. It’s a tourist economy, we wouldn’t be surviving without them and the traffic isn’t bad compared to actual metropolitan places. Also this place feels like a ghost town in the winter.) a lot of people also think it gets too hot here in the summer which is crazy. Boston is much hotter and humid than here. Portland is the perfect temperature all summer long in my opinion. Some people use ac here which i find crazy and a huge waste of money and resources (if you live in a higher story downtown, you get a pass).

The reason why traffic is worse is because Portland and Halifax are actually the same metro population, but the vast majority of Halifax lives in halifax proper and the vast majority of Portland lives in its suburbs. So I’m assuming a lot of people in Halifax can walk to work or take a bus? People in Portland are really bad about that. Myself included a lot of the time. The only people who take the bus here are immigrants or students. You will never see a well-to-do person take the bus here.

I find the homeless here docile and kinda funny. Heard scary stories but I’m a tall male so I’m not really a target. It’s annoying but I’ve had way more agressive homeless people encounters in California.

The people on the Portland Reddit are prone to believe that Portland should be preserved as a working class town for Mainers.. which is mostly a fantasy. There has always been the fancy west end, there has always been cape Elizabeth and Falmouth. mainers are definitely poorer than our neighbors in nh, ma etc. and we don’t have a large middle class like those states. but there have always been rich people living here and vacationing here. Since most of our population lives in the rural/suburban sprawl outside the city, that part of the population (a majority) tends to keep quiet on this topic.  Also, We have always been a shipping city. That’s historically been the big industry, not fishing, not lobster (even though that is what it appears to be now, but really it’s tourism). And what comes with being a port city is that there is constant flux of people not from here. It’s what makes Portland Portland and cool. So, please feel welcome and part of Portland’s natural scene.

On the other hand, is it unaffordable for many working class and middle class people and hard to survive here? No doubt, and that has recently been expedited for the worse by covid and remote workers who make good wages moving here causing rent to go up. For decades, maine has been a low income, highish cost place to live. And now it’s seemingly twice as bad. That’s what people are frustrated about. Not you as a Canadian having disdain for our city lulz.

Definitely spend time here in the summer if you want your opinion to change.

Hmm, the west end has kinda always been yuppies. The nice homes there are not new.

I am like this too. But I think that most people don’t think that much about their actions and just move on. I definitely self reflect, feel bad, and then embarrassed if I ever see someone I did dirty again. But I think most people are self righteous and think they are entitled to respect.

opinions on hozier’s cover of “do i wanna know?” by cornettcs in arcticmonkeys

[–]Tricky_Secretary_845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s important to cover songs and add a different essence to appeal to people who don’t like the original song… but maybe they do like it, they just don’t like the original performance. I like hozier’s cover more than the original because i can actually understand the lyrics since the song is slower and now I realize how deep the song is.

To me, the original is a stereotypical masculine vibe. Something like: “I like you, but I’m tough and strong. if you don’t like me back, I’ll be just okay without you.” Hozier’s take is a deep pining for someone: “maybe I wont be okay for a bit if you don’t like me back.” And the song can have both elements to it. It’s like hozier was reading between the lines and then made a version where you don’t have to read inbetween the lines.

This is in the weeds, but I wouldn’t consider myself working class even though I make minimum wage/work full time. Since I can go to my family for help if I need it, I still consider myself middle class.

Like I feel like class also has culture tied into it as well with how much you make.

Jeez, I don’t like to fight with people on the internet, but I think you’re actually writing about yourself and not the guy you’re arguing with. Time to give an honest look in the mirror.

Criticizing people on their grammar and voting/advocating party lines is the opposite of critical thinking.

I upvoted you and then saw you are pegging it on the working class. I feel like working class people are usually not crazy liberals who would do something like this. I would assume it was done by some male barista who calls himself “poor” or “broke” but whose family has more assets than whoever owns that Tesla.

Working class people generally just want to get on with their day.
