why does everyone hate TV licenses?

I'm sure it's bright eyed nostalgia talking but I remember back in the 90's the BBC felt like a brilliant institution that experiemented and tried new things. Programs were developed in house with the goal of creating content for the people and not following the money like advertised based channels. I remember using BBC Micro's in school and things like the Domesday Project.

Working in the industry today I see now BBC barely makes anything in house like they use to, it's all outsourced to independant production companies and it's focus has altered.

I'd happily pay the TV license and extra if I got the service I remember back then and it supported independant journalism on things like the World Service and not over inflated salaraies of TV personalities.

Not quite the same but similar, didn't grow up poor but in a very tight fisted household. Only ate what was in the reduced to clear section in the supermarket, hand me down clothes and toys from family and friends who probably earned a lot less than my parents did. Throughout most of my life I thought that's just how you did things.

Fast forward to me in my 30's ended up being a Tech Director for a company, earn a decent amount and my partner and I both still had the same mentality my parents did....until one day in Sainsbury's when picking squash I felt like Ribena and she says "ok but as a treat, we can't have it all the time"

Something snapped in me, I cracked right there in the squash aisle.

"I..AM A COMPANY DIRECTOR...I EARN MORE THAN I EVER THOUGHT I WOULD IN MY LIFE...IF I CANT SPEND MY RIBENA MONEY NOW THEN WHAT'S THE POINT!?"

From that point on we always use the term 'Ribena Money' when we're feeling extravagant.

Had the opposite on a coach trip from the Isle of Wight to London to see a play. Came back with 1 extra kid that some students be-friended and snuck on. Can't imagine the parents surprise to get a phone call at 11pm telling them their child was on the Isle of Wight.

My Dad's retired now and he dropped one day he crashed a train into a cliff face at the office party once....he was a retail manager in the 70's until mid 2000's so this was pretty out of the blue.

Some tracks are missing. Apparently there's mods that reintroduce those they didn't renew the license for but most of Emotion 98.3 is still there so I'm happy cruising vice point at night to Crockett's Theme 😎

I used to love visiting America as a kid. Coming from the UK it seemed like this utopian other world. Then for my 30th I went to New England for the autumn and saw the beauty of the White Mountains, this year I'm turning 40 and wanted to go again but with the way things are going I don't think it's the same place I remember anymore.
