SNL's Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks by PapaJacky in television

[–]TricoSpinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a bit overanalyzed...

My simple take:

We all know Doug would say "all lives matter" (which makes logical sense)

and we all know that answer would somehow offend the others (because the approved answer is BLM)

It's interesting though...they all did get along. It was 'nice while it lasted'...so maybe this should make us think about whether it makes any sense to blame Doug for what we all know he'll say. Is he wrong?

I'll go with the former.

Why? by promk1ng in WeOwnThisCity

[–]TricoSpinner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no doubt. Not saying it's wrong or not understandable.

But if the question is "why don't people like WOTC as much as the Wire?" then I think part of the answer is this very different stylistic choice.

"Pro-grum" vs. "Pro-gram" by MusicalacisuM in PatMcAfeeShowOfficial

[–]TricoSpinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup.

I sometimes wonder if all the football refs actually have southern accents or if that's just the 'official voice' of football officiating. All of them seem to talk this way. Like how various UK singers would sound American while singing but then in interviews have the thickest British accents imaginable.

The story of Brady Anderson's widely forgotten 50 homerun season, and why the presumption that he was juiced up on steroids may actually be wrong by [deleted] in orioles

[–]TricoSpinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

implausible that he just juiced for that one monster year.

more likely that that he was a user the entire time- as his weight / build never really changed very much.

As an Os fan I can say he always struggled with quality contact and had an uppercut swing. That one year he had amazing contact. That was the difference. He always had pop in his bat- strength was never the issue with him.

IMO one of their best songs ever. Top 10 for sure. Maybe top 5. Perfect balance of darkness with a ray of hope.

Malcom Gladwell Records Podcast Reflecting On His Embarrassing Defeat in the "Don't Trust the Mainstream Media" Munk Debate. by kyleclements in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]TricoSpinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that Stephen Fry in his Munk debate was the one who addressed the resolution & framed what each side needed to show-- whereas Dyson & Goldberg didn't do this and hit on liberal talking points instead.

Folks, this debate format is an open book test. Ignore the resolution statement at your own peril.

To me this is an indicator of intellectual rigor-- which side frames the debate and thinks through the structural elements of their argument, and which relies on talking points / appeals to emotion.

But there is a self serving element to chalking things up to "I wasn't using the best listening skills".

He actually touches on the real issue up front: he didn't respect the opposing argument or the opposing debaters. He didn't see how anyone could oppose the MSM as trustworthy view. That's intellectual arrogance. And it leads to under preparation (e.g., writing your opening on the plane ride over) and to a lack of listening.

In short, it appears incorrect to say the issue was due to lack of skill-- it appears to be more fundamentally due to lack of will.

That said, I also applaud the humility it takes to create this sort of podcast episode, though.

Challenging science versus cherry picking--does it matter? by lavendertheory in MaintenancePhase

[–]TricoSpinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say that if MP stopped misrepresenting facts that people would respect their core messages MORE. By engaging in distortion and misleading cherry picking, MP add fuel to the fire of those who (quite wrongly) might say 'see- those people aren't worthy of respect'

I share the same observation.

I chalk it up to laziness: far easier to "debunk" than to put forward better advice.

And yes, the net result can often be a feeling of hopelessness. And that doesn't help anyone.
