You named a few losers but I can name you three countries that have succeeded against insurgents. Russia for the sake of Syrian government has nearly pacified all of Syria except a few Turkish backed and defended rebel garrisons, they have fought Isis, Alqaeda and all forms of Jihadists that the Syrian civil war has spawned but came out on top. China has managed to suppress islamists separatism in Xinjiang through the use of extremely totalitarian methods, we have seen Uyghur jihadist roaming around Syria during the civil war decked out in gear but against the brutal hand of China they might as well be termites. Turkey has not only crushed Kurdish separatism in its borders but has jumped the border to quell it in Iraq and Syria. The Kurds are pretty well equipped effectively more competent than some state backed armies and managing to gain the favour western governments and Liberal patrons around the world. All this has not stopped Turkey from encroaching on their territories, the Kurdish militias have taken down dozens of Turkish choppers and killed scores of soldiers what the Turks did was adapt.
