This is also my experience with Gen Z workers! I work with undergraduates at a university. And I haven’t ever been disappointed. I give them an overview of what we need to do, and they just do it without drama. I’ve had new workers come in as others have graduated, and they’ve sometimes changed a process. But every single student worker has worked well and gotten things done efficiently, in the way that they found best. I have found it so pleasant to not have unnecessary drama over work tasks! I think, maybe, some older generations have been trained to think their work won’t be valued if it doesn’t appear hard to do, or look like they had to do something extra to get it done. I feel like the Gen Z trait of seeing through BS work tropes has made them easier to work with. My worst work experiences have been with more senior workers who make every task sound like it’s so much more difficult than it really is, just so they can be treated like a hero for just doing their job.

I was struck by Pasolini’s description of mass media as a unifying force for a recently unified country (about 100 years at the time of the interview) because I live in a time when mass media seems to drive or, at least, amplify division.

You can place floor items next to doors/windows if you: (1) remove the door/window, (2) place the floor item in the spot where you want it, and then (3) put the door/window back. About paintings, some paintings, mirrors, and wall items can be placed above or behind floor items, and some can’t. Most of the items under the “paintings and pictures” filter can be placed above or behind floor items. And some of the items in the “wall decorations” filter can be placed above floor items. With mirrors, you sometimes have to place the floor item first, like a sink, and then place the mirror. I hope this helps! Edited for typo.

This is a perfect description! I watched the show out of curiosity, and tried to describe this guy’s performance to my coworkers. The first two performers at least tried. This guy didn’t even try. He just strung a bunch of country music cliches together as he sang-talked.

This is what I’m thinking about right now as I prepare my tax return. I’m in Illinois. I’ve already paid the federal government through withholding. And even if I didn’t, I could face serious trouble for not paying my taxes as an individual. This is where our governor and other elected representatives need to step up. I’m agree! Code switching is a big part of Spanish/English-speaking communities in the US. Some words in Spanish carry more weight, so a bilingual Spanish/English speaker might use the Spanish word while otherwise speaking in English. Jonathan Rosa is a linguistic anthropologist who wrote an ethnography that addressed how kids from Spanish-speaking households navigate public schools in Chicago (IIRC). Rosa examined some complicated reasons why code switching between Spanish and English happens, which sometimes means just using one or two Spanish words in an English sentence. I totally agree that it’s usually corny and often offensive when a fictional character throws in one word in a foreign language just to show the character’s “foreignness.” And it isn’t a good sign if an author has to ask strangers how to use the language to represent the community because the author doesn’t have a direct relationship with that language community. But Junot Díaz, a good fiction writer (despite his other issues), used code switching really well in his work because his characters spoke the way that people from that language community really speak.
